EDITOR Angelo Van Bogart ([email protected]) The Perfect Garage ONLINE EDITOR Mike Eppinger ([email protected]) s hobbyists, I would venture to guess that most of us put the EDITORIAL DIRECTOR Brian Earnest cart before the horse or, in our jargon, the car before the garage. ([email protected]) It’s not until we have collector cars and trucks that we realize SENIOR DESIGNER Dave Hauser we don’t have a perfect, or at least suitable, building in which to A VP GENERAL MANAGER store them. That was certainly the case when I began collecting cars. COLLECTIBLES Corinne Zielke The fi rst car I ever bought was already 40 years old at the time, so it PRESIDENT HOME GROUP Peter H. Miller was certainly in collector car territory — even if it didn’t look like it. As a 16 year old, I didn’t have a diploma, let alone the deed to property, and my folks weren’t about to let me park my rusty 1955 Cadillac in their garage. SUBSCRIPTIONS CUSTOMER SERVICE More collector cars followed me and with them, more years of constantly 877-300-0243 (U.S. & Canada) 386-246-3431 (International) trying to fi nd a roof to store the cars under, including the ’55 Cadillac. P.O. Even then, I had more cars than garage space. issue that may count as two issues toward your subscription.) While I fi rmly believe that one can never have enough garage space, in a PLACE A CLASSIFIED AD perfect world, the garage space would come before the old cars and trucks. www.oldcarsweekly.com I really thought that would be the case when I fi nally bought my fi rst garage (it took months for my realtor to eventually understand that I was buying ADVERTISING a garage with a house, not a house with a garage). The garage was 36 x 28 ADVERTISING SALES REPRESENTATIVE Michelle Kraemer - 715-318-0946 ft. — big enough to park three big Cadillacs door handle to door handle ([email protected]) and two 1980s Caprices sideways at the back. I was in heaven — at fi rst. ADVERTISING SALES ASSISTANT When I parked the Caprices sideways at the front, I realized it was going to Kathy Shanklin - 715-350-7090 be tricky to get them in and out on a regular basis and that I would need to ([email protected]) SALES DIRECTOR add garage doors to the sides of the garage, too. It was at that point that I Heather Glynn Gniazdowski understood what the perfect garage is made of. ([email protected]) It’s not all about size, as some might imagine, but access. The per- fect building has a garage door for each vehicle so that no vehicle blocks another and a vehicle can be driven out on a moment’s notice. It can be extremely frustrating when a disabled vehicle — especially one torn apart for repair — blocks a fully functioning vehicle.

The perfect garage has enough space to open a vehicle’s doors without President & CEO, Andrew W. Clurman fear of striking an adjacent wall or vehicle. The best-thought-out garages Senior VP, CFO, COO, & Treasurer, Brian Sellstrom CTO, Nelson Saenz, Executive Vice President (EVP) and I’ve seen allowed for the doors on adjacent vehicles to both be opened Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Patricia B. Fox Director of Production, Phil Graham without touching, and those cars were with long doors! VP, People & Places, JoAnn Thomas A well-lit space is also ideal. Good lighting would ideally provide VP, Digital Products & Platforms, Katie Herrell enough brightness to work on the vehicles without fi ghting with the cord AIM BoardChair, Efrem Zimbalist III on a trouble light. Good lighting on the vehicles also lets you fully admire NEWSSTAND SALES: them when the weather is inclement. NPS Media Group To me, these features are the major requirements to the perfect garage, but there are other basics to consider: security, a moisture barrier in the EDITORIAL/ADVERTISING OFFICE fl oor to prevent condensation and, of course, more garage 5225 Joerns Drive, Suite 2, Stevens Point, WI 54481 715-445-2214 Fax: 715-997-8883 space than you currently require. After all, you never know www.oldcarsweekly.com what will follow you home and you don’t want to be back www.oldcarsreport.com at square one, needing to build another more perfect [email protected] garage.

Since the shop has 14-ft.-tall walls, we purchased a long, telescoping paint roller handle to paint the walls. We had planned to use texture paint on the ceil- ing, but it didn’t work well with a roller. So, we hired a man we used to work with who paints houses with his kids and puts the money into a college fund. We were uncertain about install- ing the fl ooring, so we hired a pro to do it. We watched closely and realized we could have easily done it ourselves, but it would not have been trimmed as well. The install starts at one corner and moves across the room, then inward Q This past June almost everything on the fl oor was removed except the lift and car. row-by-row. RaceDeck provides how- to-do-it illustrations on each box of tiles, as well as on a sheet inside each box. If your room doesn’t require trimming, it’s very easy. It is necessary to leave a half-inch of expansion space along each wall, and if you need to trim the tiles, an equal amount must be sliced off of each edge to keep the checkerboard pattern cen- tered. A saber-saw was used to trim the tiles and our pro installer knew how to measure and cut quickly, so the whole job took one evening. If we had done it, it would look almost as nice, but would likely have taken several days. The Backyard Buddy lift in the shop is the oldest one we own. While the newer ones are powder coated, this older lift is painted. After racing at Bonneville in 2013, we stored the race car on this Q Measuring a RaceDeck tile for a trim cut to fi t it into the corner. lift. Although it had been washed twice, there was still enough salt on the car to rust the lift. Several attempts were made to paint it with store-bought paints, but none of those efforts came out well and we thought the lift would never look nice again. Then we remembered meeting Ran- dy Tomak of KBS Coatings at a car show. We called him and ordered the products needed for a three-step coating system designed to stop rust. He also recommended using KBS Maxx Red top coat and paint activator to restore the lift’s fi nal appearance. Tomak looked at pictures of the lift and estimated how much of each product we needed. His estimate turned out to be exactly what we needed. The KBS fi nishes were $260.70. We told Tomak that we don’t spray paint in our small shop and he said it would be OK to apply the Maxx Red with a paint roller. The job went well and the lift came out looking great and rust protected. As the ramps move up and down, a little paint gets scraped off so we’ll have to do some touch up until the posts kind of “sand” themselves. After the new fl ooring was partly installed, we used a crow bar to move the lift over a completed section of fl ooring and center it in the room. The old wooden work bench we had was 33 inches deep and ate up a lot of space, but a new, slimmer cabinet we planned to buy was 22 inches deep and would give us more work space on either side, plus tool storage. After checking in and fi nding out the history of his business, Bob handed us the keys to the yard truck, a very tired but dependable Chevrolet Tahoe. We needed it. Spread out across 40 acres are about 1500 vehicles. Many of these cars and trucks were here when his father started the yard more than 55 years ago. Bob doesn’t be- lieve in crushing cars, even when the price of scrap iron goes sky high, so there’s plenty of vintage iron. “Back when the yard was just starting and into the 1970s, we did have a crusher come to the yard,” Bob said. “That is how that one car got parked out front, the blue-and-white ‘cube!’” Bob explained that car had could not be fi tted onto a load of other cars taken to the “mill,” so it has been kept around as a souvenir ever since. There are other memo- ries from Bob’s past in the yard. We drove past a twisted and mangled wad of sheet metal and iron encased in Q ABOVE: Both parts and project Chevrolet Corvairs were found at Owens the remains of an old oak tree. I thought it was a work of nature’s art and was going to leave it like that until about 10 years ago when a tornado came to visit, hit the tree and took it and the Edsel with it! At that point I just loaded it all up and brought it to the yard where it will probably remain for decades to come.” A few years back, Bob and his wife relocated to cus- tom living quarters right at the parts yard. Behind the façade of junked cars they have a beautiful home, and his attached workshop is decorated and stocked with what Bob really loves: custom-built rods and a fantastic dis- play of memorabilia. The best part for Bob is that his commute to work is just steps away. The variety of vehicles at Owens Auto Salvage is pretty complete with a few 1940s, a good number of www.oldcarsweekly.com December 10, 2020 ❘ 31 1950s, plenty from the 1960s and a growing popu- lation from the 1970s and 1980s. Most of the cars come from the dry climates of the Texas Panhandle where surface rust is about the worst corrosion you might fi nd. Over the years, many of the vehicles have been stripped clean, but as “Flat-top” Bob esti- mates, for every car in his yard, there are four to fi ve others with parts from his yard that are still on the road. However, there are plenty of good parts still to be found and yes, our tools did come out of the box. And yes, we did buy a few parts for our own projects. In addition to the cars in the field, there is rack upon rack fi lled with complete engines and trans- Q Almost 50 years ago, Chevrolet brought us the Vega. We also checked the outdoor racks that held com- plete front clips (hoods, fenders, grilles, etc.) as well as complete vehicles destined for project cars. Prices were reasonable, especially considering they are becoming harder to find, and Bob is fun to deal with. His customer base comes from around the world with daily shipments going all over the United States as well as to patrons in Europe and many of the Pacifi c Rim countries such as Australia, New Zealand and even Japan. Now, about the unexpected. Sharing the field Q We found a few items on this 1958 Edsel Villager wagon, but plenty more with the vintage cars are several head of cattle. My friend and I are city slick- ers and the only way we like our beef is medium rare. But knowing this little guy was in trouble, we set about freeing the calf. (He was a bit too rare for our taste.) Mama wasn’t too sure of our motives, but once her baby was free and able to join her, the two wandered off and we are sure she was scolding her baby about going into strange places. Owens Salvage Co. Inc. is open six days a week. From Monday to Friday, the hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Time. This is kind of a throwback group that really loves their cars and loves driving them on Texas’ wide-open highways. When he’s not enjoying time behind the wheel with his fellow Road Rockets, “Flat-top” Bob is ac- tive on Facebook and maintains the yard’s website at www.owenssalvage.com.

Q This 1940 Ford V-8 coupe was a fairly complete project car,and a perfect candidate for cruising the Texas back roads.

Q A 1960 Ford coupe is a rare sight today and this solid example could Q From 1946, this Nash Super sedan was still holding some great be made to roam roads again. parts, including those stylish rear fenders.

Q One of the more complete International Scouts we spotted at Owens Salvage, this example still had its running gear intact when inspected. www.oldcarsweekly.com December 10, 2020 ❘ 43 Q A pair of 1962 Oldsmobiles at Owens Salvage; the Starfi re hardtop was a real eye- catcher.

Q RIGHT: Full-size elegance was found in the 1968 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight four-door hardtop taking up residence at Owens Salvage.

Q BELOW: We have heard some collectors refer to this era of Lincoln as “V-8-power water buffalos.” Regardless of whether you like them, when is the last time you saw a 1950 Cosmopolitan in a parts yard?

44 ❘ December 10, 2020 www.oldcarsweekly.com Q ABOVE: This 1955 Plymouth Belvedere wagon was sporting Texas license plates from the mid 1960s.

Q LEFT: Sporting a lot of little treasures, this 1954 Pontiac Chieftain sedan was rich with goodies for the avid restorer.

Q How about a 1964 Rambler 770 Classic station wagon? We found this prime example just waiting for a good home.

www.oldcarsweekly.com December 10, 2020 ❘ 45 Q We found relatively few trucks at Owens Salvage, but the ones we found were impressive such as this 1947 Studebaker tractor.

Q LEFT: We had to do a double-take when we identifi ed this mass of metal embedded in an old oak tree as a 1958 Edsel. It was torn apart by an errant tornado.

Q BOTTOM LEFT: The service history of this late-1920s American-LaFrance fi re truck was not known, but it had served as a parade vehicle in nearby Pampa, Texas.

Q BOTTOM RIGHT: One of several racks found at Owens Auto Salvage fi lled with complete front clips. This grouping has 1970s through 1980s front clips.
