Telfa Conference and Global Law Forum 2013 Telfa Conference and Global Law Forum In conjunction with ® MOSCOW 6-8 JUNE TELFA CONFERENCE AND GLOBAL LAW FORUM 2013 TELFA CONFERENCE AND GLOBAL LAW FORUM FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE WELCOME TO MOSCOW. A warm Russian welcome to all TELFA, USLAW and other alliance members, their clients and partners, and family and friends, to TELFA’s annual event in Moscow. What a wonderful opportunity this presents to renew old friendships and business relationships, and of course to forge new ones. ‘An enigma wrapped in a mystery’, is what Churchill once famously said about Russia. Let us reveal some of its secrets and show you the convivial side of modern Russia. Since the defeat of the Communist regime and the fall of the Soviet Union, much has changed here in the last 20 years. During the chaotic and turbulent 1990’s, the country stove to free itself from its Soviet shackles. The transition from anarchy to stability was successful, and now a bright new era is in full swing. Today Russia is a young and thriving market economy, and the Russian people have every opportunity to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. However, you can still feel the mystery and romance of Russia. As you walk its streets, you will encounter its rich history on all sides. You will be staying at the famous Kempinski. This luxurious hotel is located on the other side of the river, opposite the Kremlin. From here it’s but a short stroll to fabled Red Square and the iconic St Basil’s Cathedral with its colourful facade and emblematic onion domes. Just a few metres from there you can see Lenin’s mausoleum and the place where Stalin used to oversee the parades of his military machine – a mighty force that conquered Berlin and half of Europe. Red Square is also home to the History Museum where you can view Czarist Russian heritage in all its glory. And let’s not forget GUM, one of the world’s most beautiful and architecturally inspiring shopping malls. This legendary ‘shopper’s paradise’ majestically lines one side of the square. Moscow is also a vibrant centre of culture and the arts. The City has a thriving economy, where unemployment is practically non- existent and business opportunities abound. The TELFA Moscow 2013 program is structured so that you will have a chance to enjoy many of Moscow’s delights. It certainly won’t be all work and no play! We call the program a Global Law Exposition with Social and Cultural Events. The Global Law Exposition Forum gives you a chance to learn about interesting worldwide trends in law. You will meet other lawyers and local and expat business people who will be attending the various seminars. The Global Law Exposition Forum starts on 6 June, one day ahead of the actual TELFA event. TELFA and USLAW members will also have their own traditional programs. However, nobody will be stuck in conference rooms and meetings all day! We have planned a crowded social and cultural events calendar, with a range of diverting and exciting indoor and outdoor activities. A visit to the Kremlin, Red Square, the Bolshoi Theater, the Tretyakov Gallery and a day out at the Gorky Park are just some of the unmissable things to do. If you enjoy hands-on activities, why not take part in our Russian cuisine program and learn to cook Borshch and other staples of the Russian kitchen. And for those who prefer just to eat, we have not forgotten fine-dining opportunities. These include a dinner at the Kremlin and another marvellous feast on a Moscow river cruise. An event that not only affords great culinary delights, but also spectacular views of Moscow from the water. We are very much looking forward to seeing you in Moscow on June 7 and 8, 2013. Should you decide to come earlier and/or extend your visit we shall be more than happy to help and advise you. In fact, if you are coming from overseas you should definitely take the opportunity to see more of Russia. For example, a trip to St Petersburg, the former imperial capital of Russia with all its splendours, will be an unforgettable experience. Thanks and Welcome! Or, as we say in Russian: Spasibo i Dobro Pozhalovat! PUTIN’S NEW RUSSIA Edited by Jon Hellevig and Alexandre Latsa With an Introduction by Peter Lavelle Contributors: Patrick Armstrong, Mark Chapman, Aleksandr Grishin, Jon Hellevig, Anatoly Karlin, Eric Kraus, Alexandre Latsa, Nils van der Vegte, Craig James Willy Publisher: Kontinent USA September, 2012 First edition published 2012 First edition published 2012 Copyright to Jon Hellevig and Alexander Latsa Publisher: Kontinent USA 1800 Connecticut Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20009 [email protected] www.us-russia.org/kontinent Cover by Alexandra Mozilova on motive of painting by Ilya Komov Printed at Printing house "Citius" ISBN 978-0-9883137-0-5 This is a book authored by independent minded Western observers who have real experience of how Russia has developed after the failed perestroika since Putin first became president in 2000. Common sense warning: The book you are about to read is dangerous. If you are from the English language media sphere, virtually everything you may think you know about contemporary Rus- sia; its political system, leaders, economy, population, so-called opposition, foreign policy and much more is either seriously flawed or just plain wrong. This has not happened by accident. This book explains why. This book is also about gross double standards, hypocrisy, and venal stupidity with western media playing the role of willing accomplice. After reading this interesting tome, you might reconsider everything you “learn” from mainstream media about Russia and the world. In conjunction with ® MOSCOW 6-8 JUNE GLOBAL LAW AND INVESTMENT FORUM MOSCOW 2013 INFORMATION PARTNERS GLOBAL LAW AND INVESTMENT FORUM MOSCOW FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE WELCOME TO MOSCOW. The Moscow Global Law Forum offers a series of educational programs and seminars on global law issues. These will be facilitatedy b top legal and investment experts from Russia and across the globe. The program is aimed at the local and expat business community and investors in Moscow; people who need to plan how to structure their international operations. This year we have paid special attention to questions of how to structure Russian inbound and outbound investments through offshore structures, and indeed, to the need of doing so in the first place. This is especially pertinent in view of the euro crisis and the financial upheavals that have shaken Cyprus and affected Russian and in- ternational offshore investors. For this purpose, we have brought in the best international specialists to explain what countries around the world have to offer. We will cover a broad range of jurisdictions: Asian, including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, alaysiaM and Macau; European, including Switzerland, Cyprus, Malta, Luxembourg, the Baltics, the Netherlands and Ireland; and the USA. The concept “offshore” might be considered misleading. What we actually mean is how to structure your international holdings andinvest- ments in a global world. Therefore, we will also cover countries that are not traditionally considered as “offshore” but which nevertheless offer great incentives for investment. To this end we are holding the following seminars: Business and Investment Laws in the ordicN and Baltic Regions, and Business and Investment Laws in Central and East European Countries.
