The French preoccupation with the past had been developing throughout the later nineteenth century and increased with Stravinsky’s residency in France.1 Stravinsky’s particular brand of neoclassicism did not find favour, however, with a number of intellectual young composers of the 1930s, notably those associated with La Jeune France, who regarded neoclassicism as a false path for musical modernism and were scathing in their attacks upon it. -

The Contest Works for Trumpet and Cornet of the Paris Conservatoire, 1835-2000: A Performative and Analytical Study, with a Catalogue Raisonné of the Extant Works Analytical Study: The Contest Works for Trumpet and Cornet of the Paris Conservatoire, 1835-2000: A Study of Instrumental Techniques, Forms and Genres, with a Catalogue Raisonné of the Extant Corpus By Brandon Philip Jones ORCHID ID# 0000-0001-9083-9907 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2018 Faculty of Fine Arts and Music The University of Melbourne ABSTRACT The Conservatoire de Paris concours were a consistent source of new literature for the trumpet and cornet from 1835 to 2000. Over this time, professors and composers added over 172 works to the repertoire. Students and professionals have performed many of these pieces, granting long-term popularity to a select group. However, the majority of these works are not well-known. The aim of this study is to provide students, teachers, and performers with a greater ability to access these works. This aim is supported in three ways: performances of under-recorded literature; an analysis of the instrumental techniques, forms and genres used in the corpus; and a catalogue raisonné of all extant contest works. The performative aspect of this project is contained in two compact discs of recordings, as well as a digital video of a live recital. Twenty-six works were recorded; seven are popular works in the genre, and the other nineteen are works that are previously unrecorded. The analytical aspect is in the written thesis; it uses the information obtained in the creation of the catalogue raisonné to provide an overview of the corpus in two vectors. -

SUFFRAGE AND VIRGINIAWOOLF: ‘THE MASS BEHIND THE SINGLE VOICE’ by sowon s. park Virginia Woolf is now widely accepted as a ‘mother’ through whom twenty- ¢rst- century feminists think back, but she was ambivalent towards the su¡ragette movement. Feminist readings of the uneasy relation betweenWoolf and the women’s Downloaded from movement have focused on her practical involvement as a short-lived su¡rage campaigner or as a feminist publisher, and have tended to interpret her disapproving references to contemporary feminists as redemptive self-critique. Nevertheless the apparent contradictions remain largely unresolved. By moving away from Woolf in su¡rage to su¡rage in Woolf, this article argues that her work was in fact deeply http://res.oxfordjournals.org/ rooted at the intellectual centre of the su¡rage movement. Through an examination of the ideas expressed in A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas and of two su¡rage characters, Mary Datchet in Night and Day and Rose Pargiter in TheYears,it establishes how Woolf’s feminist ideas were informed by su¡rage politics, and illumi- nates connections and allegiances as well as highlighting her passionate resistance to a certain kind of feminism. at Bodleian Library on October 20, 2012 I ‘No other element in Woolf’s work has created so much confusion and disagree- mentamongherseriousreadersasherrelationtothewomen’smovement’,noted Alex Zwerdling in 1986.1 Nonetheless the women’s movement is an element more often overlooked than addressed in the present critical climate. The reality lies in the middle, in which many individuals participated in resistance or collaboration in a variety of degrees. I argue that composing, performing, and listening to music are substantial resistant acts, using the resistance movements in Occupied Paris as a case study. This study has two overarching goals. -

AND WAY STATIONS Emma Liggins Dept of English, Manchester Metropolitan University, Rosamond St West, off Oxford Road, Manchester M15 6LL. This article re-considers representations of the militant suffragette in two texts by the radical writer Elizabeth Robins, Votes for Women! (1907) and her collection of political speeches and articles, Way Stations (1913). Her plea for twentieth-century women writers to create new roles for women outside those of wives and sweethearts can be read in relation to the creation of her ‘exceptional’ suffragette heroine, who thrives on her singleness in her 1907 play. Focussing particularly on the taboo issues of abortion and unmarried motherhood, I consider the ways in which Robins developed the fallen woman on stage narrative in the early twentieth century, and how childlessness is shown to be both necessary and problematic for the suffragette heroine. I also reassess Robins’ complex commentaries on militancy and ‘quiet propaganda’ in her suffrage speeches and pamphlets. The meanings of militancy as a form of political protest have generated considerable discussion amongst suffrage historians and feminist critics. -

WOMEN OF THE FUTURE: THE PERFORMATIVE PERSONHOOD OF ELIZABETH ROBINS, DJUNA BARNES, AND THE BARONESS ELSA VON FREYTAG- LORINGHOVEN MICHELLE FEDA 67 Pages The New Woman is the term used to describe the idea of a woman who embodied the changing social norms around her involvement in public life during the fin-de-siècle. New Women were bold and brash, educated and independent, and, importantly young; the term encapsulated any particular woman who stepped outside of her mother's Victorian social norms. The New Woman was as much a construct of the time as it was a description. The playwright and suffragette Elizabeth Robins performs “new womanhood” on the stage, and her play Votes for Women! enacts this struggle between New Women and the older generation. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles In Search of a Style: French Violin Performance from Franck to Ravel A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts by Ji Young An 2013 © Copyright by Ji Young An 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION In Search of a Style: French Violin Performance from Franck to Ravel by Ji Young An Doctor of Musical Arts University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Robert Winter, Chair My dissertation focuses on issues of French sound and style in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century French violin repertoire. As a violinist who studied at the Paris Conservatory, I have long been puzzled as to why so little had been written about something that everyone seems to take for granted—so called French style. I attacked this elusive issue from three perspectives: 1) a detailed look at performance directions; 2) comparisons among recordings by artists close to this period (Jacques Thibaud, Zino Francescatti, as well as contemporary French artists such as Philippe Graffin and Guillaume Sutre); and 3) interviews with three living French violinists (Olivier Charlier, Régis Pasquier, and Gérard Poulet) with strong ties to this tradition. After listening to countless historical recordings, I settled on three pivotal works that illustrate the emergence and full flowering of the French style: César Franck’s Violin Sonata (1886), Claude Debussy’s Violin Sonata (1917), and ii Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane: Rapsodie de Concert pour Violon et Piano (1924). Each of them presents specific challenges: notational and stylistic issues in Franck’s Violin Sonata, Debussy’s performance directions in his Violin Sonata, and notational and interpretive issues in Ravel’s Tzigane that led to a separate, orally-transmitted French tradition. -

It briefly investigates the rise of the British suffrage movement and highlights the role of ‗suffrage drama‘ as its social apparatus. The authors demonstrate how suffrage artists, especially the playwright/actress Elizabeth Robins, acted against the dominant patriarchal hegemony and were in frontline of social uprisings. It is argued that ‗Suffrage drama‘ as a ‗place of tolerance‘ functioned as an antithesis to the mainstream theatre and challenged the conventional dramatic forms practiced prior to its birth. Suffrage drama provided a space for women to have their collective voice heard in a social and political context in the early Victorian era. Elizabeth Robins, mostly acknowledged for enacting women heroines of Ibsen‘s plays, became an invaluable inspirational figure for suffrage women as she was the actress in whom the strong concept of the ‗New Woman‘ was incarnated.
