L’analisi su Bolaño è preceduta da uno studio della letteratura poliziesca d’autore in America Latina, nel quale si evidenziano le strategie adottate dai diversi autori per adattare la formula fortemente codificata del genere al proprio contesto. In particolare, il romanzo poliziesco diventa spesso il luogo di elaborazione e denuncia dei traumi della storia recente dell’America Latina, e in molti casi è anche lo spunto per una riflessione sulla letteratura, anche attraverso la produttiva analogia critico-detective e scritore-assassino. Bo- laño integra in modo fluido le diverse tipologie della scrittura di genere. Si evidenziano nel suo macrotesto due grandi categorie di investigazione: quella legata a crimini veri e propri e quella che indaga la letteratura, centro misterioso dell’intero universo testuale dell’autore. La letteratura appare come il territorio in cui si agglutinano gli elementi più complessi della riflessione bolañesca, a partire dall’idea della commistione tra pratica artistica e male, espli- citata nelle molteplici rappresentazioni di scrittori. Le investigazioni dei personaggi segnano sempre il fallimento del detective, destabilizzando in modo radicale le premesse del genere di riferimento. L’individuazione del silenzio come finale inevitabile di ogni attività di ricerca non si traduce però in un mero catalogo della sconfitta, posto che la problematizzazione del codice ermeneutico si sviluppa nella costante tensione tra il gioco ironicamente postmoderno di rivisitazione del genere e la tensione romantica che anima i personaggi, e che già giustifica la ricerca in quanto coraggioso tentativo di penetrare all’interno del mistero del male. Parole chiave: Roberto Bolaño - letteratura latinoamericana - letteratura poliziesca - male - metaletteratura. 3 This work is focuses on the study of the complex relation that Roberto Bolaño establishes with detective fiction. Before this analysis, a brief history of detective novel in Latin America will underline the main strategies used by latin american writers to adapt the formula of the genre to their context. In particular, detective novel is often used as a means to denounce the violent events of recent latin american history; furthermore, many writers reflect on literature through crime fiction, in many cases using the analogy that associates the critic with the de- tective and the writer with the criminal. Bolaño incorporates in his novels different types of crime fiction. In his works, we can identify two main kinds of investigations: those dealing with crimes, and those investigating on literature, which is always represented as the myste- rious core of Bolaño’s world. Literature is seen as the place that gather the most problematic elements of Bolaño’s poetics, such as the relation between art and evil - highlighted in the different characterizations of his fictional writers. These investigations always end with the failure of the detective, which questions the very basis of the genre. Recognizing that silence is the inevitable end of every possible research does not mean that Bolaño’s fiction is just the representation of failures: the problematization of the hermeneutic code is played between the postmodernist and ironic use of the genre and the romantic belief of the character. This seems to justify the investigation itself as a brave intent to explore the mystery of evil. Piglia 5 6 Introducción En toda la producción de Roberto Bolaño recurren constantemente elementos propios de la literatura policíaca, aunque los cuentos y las novelas del autor no se puedan definir como obras de género. El presente trabajo nace de la observación de la relación compleja e ines- table que el autor establece con la narrativa policíaca, y se interroga sobre el sentido de este diálogo con el género. En particular, la investigación emerge como mecanismo irrenunciable en la construcción del macrotexto del autor, en una constante problematización del acto her- menéutico. Como se verá, las investigaciones de los personajes bolañescos constituyen una serie de acercamientos a la comprensión de un mal al que las narraciones aluden de continuo y de maneras diferentes y que, sin embargo, se revela siempre como un misterio inasible. La relación de las obras de Bolaño con la literatura policíaca se desarrolla siempre en la tensión entre la actitud un tanto romántica de los personajes, que siguen su vocación emprendiendo búsquedas imposibles, y la consciente subversión del modelo policíaco, que remite a una lectura escéptica y posmoderna de la realidad. El primer capítulo constituye una introducción general al género policíaco, con particular atención a su aparición como género de la modernidad y a las crítica que desde sus comienzos han acompañado su carácter de literatura de masas. Se dedicará una sección a la distición entre novela enigma y novela negra y a l debate que se ha desarrollado en torno a estas vertientes del género. En el segundo capítulo se lleva al cabo el análisis de la introducción y de la evolución del 7 género policíaco en América Latina. Se observará, en concreto, cómo los autores latinoame- ricanos interpretan un género tan marcadamente formular, adaptándolo a las especificidades de su propio contexto. Se presentará una selección de autores cuyas experiencias resultan particularmente innovadoras y significativas en el proceso de evolución del concepto de lite- ratura de género. Interesa de manera particular evidenciar diferentes ejemplos de variación sobre la fórmula genérica y la realización de obras excéntricas, que evidencian una fuerte vo- cación a la digresión y, sobre todo, se fundan muy a menudo en el cuestionamiento, a veces bastante radical, del concepto de verdad. Se trazará un recorrido cronológico, que empieza con la producción borgeana y llega, en las obras más recientes, a la que se puede definir como una disolución del género, debida a la hibridación del policíaco con otros géneros literarios pero, sobre todo, a la extrema problematización de la posibilidad del detective, y del lector, de desentrañar el misterio que se plantea. En el análisis se evidenciarán dos líneas que recurren con frecuencia en la literatura policíaca latinoamericana: la primera consiste en la interpretación del género como medio de crítica social y denuncia política, practicada sobre todo por los autores de la vertiente hard- boiled. La representación del mundo violento e injusto característico de la novela les ofrece a los escritores la ocasión de reflexionar sobre las disfunciones de sus países, reivindicado, al mismo tiempo, su postura ideológica. El otro aspecto de la narrativa policíaca latinoamericana que se subraya en el trabajo es la presencia de la literatura como referencia constante y polifacética: los personajes escriben, leen, investigan sobre libros perdidos, se pierden en digresiones que tienen la literatura como centro. En particular, se evidenciará la importancia de la analogía entre crítico y detective y entre escritor y criminal, que plantea una reflexión en torno al acto de lectura en cuanto práctica hermenéutica, pero también la posibilidad de establecer una afinidad entre escritura y crimen, lo cual, como verá, es un punto central en la producción de Roberto Bolaño. El tercer capítulo introduce al análisis dedicada a Roberto Bolaño, centrándose, en par- 8 ticular, en la observación de los elementos de continuidad y discontinuidad del autor con respecto a la literatura policíaca latinoamericana. Cornell University 2014 Imaging Literature studies the depiction of the human form and its fragmentation in visual images analogous to the fragmentation of the literary discourse. An analysis of the novels, short stories, and essays written by Roberto Bolaño and Salvador Elizondo pays particular attention to the way in which new means of mechanical and technological reproduction continue to enrich a representational paradigm within the arts. Imaging Literature is a study that, perhaps found closer to an essayistic exploration than to a theoretical analysis, tries to understand how literary works achieve the effects they do, how they relate to other literary texts, and how they affirm or contest literary conventions regarding structure and meaning. Attending not only to content and form but also to the thematic convergence of the texts explored in each chapter, this study is arranged into four chapters: a poetics of the superficial, a poetics of light, a poetics of the body, and finally, a poetics of pornography. The artistic possibilities writers of literature first saw in a medium such as photography may be read as the anxieties generated by literary innovation projected onto the visual medium, ultimately reflecting back onto the literary endeavor itself and shedding light on the limits of literary representation.

    By Night in Chile: the Universe of Roberto Bolaño Roberto Bolaño was a Chilean poet who turned to fiction writing at the end of his life. He fled Chile for Mexico and Spain when Pinochet took power, and he died of liver failure in 2003. Taken together, the novels and short stories he wrote in the last ten years of his life are one of the great achievements of modern literature, and his major work, 2666, is surely the best novel of our young century. The themes of his work – exile, violence, poetry, fascism, youth, crime – connect all of his books into a single, sprawling text. My collection contains every book by Bolaño that has been translated into English, plus the short biography and interview collection by journalist Mónica Maristain. The highlight of the collection is the pair of editions of 2666. The first book I read by Bolaño was The Savage Detectives, a novel about poets and courage. I bought it on a whim after reading a positive review. Reading The Savage Detectives was so exhilarating that immediately upon putting it down, I drove to the nearest bookstore and bought every other Bolaño book they had on the shelf. My experience reading The Savage Detectives was surpassed only by reading the novel 2666, which I read next. Before even finishing 2666, I’d bought a copy for all my friends and convinced them to read it too. Why is it such a compelling book? 2666 manages to be a Latin American, American, German, and Russian novel all at once.

    “Bolaño and the Canon.” Ricardo Gutiérrez-Mouat Department of Spanish & Portuguese Emory University Atlanta, Georgia 30322 Roberto Bolaño’s biography and literary career can be summarized in a few words: he was born in Santiago in 1953, left his native Chile with his family in 1968, led a group of marginal poets in the Mexico City of the mid-1970s, moved to the Catalan region of Spain later that decade – where he took up writing novels and stories--, published The Savage Detectives in 1998 (for which he won the Herralde and Rómulo Gallegos prizes in consecutive years), and died in 2003 of a liver condition shortly after being consecrated as the most important writer of his generation and a year before the publication of his monumental work 2666. He was a writer who labored in relative obscurity for over two decades before making his mark in the literary world, writing poems and authoring some hard to classify novels set in Barcelona, Girona, Paris, and Blanes but featuring Latin American characters.1 Canonization in the Hispanic world was followed by canonization in the English-speaking world, where the Bolaño boom was, however, conditioned by the repackaging of his figure for a U.S. audience.     th st Notes on 20 and 21 Century Literature (1910-present) Prose Fiction (Novel and Short Story) 1910-1949 Regionalism, Nationalism, Novel of the Mexican Revolution Starting around 1910, the basis of Latin American regionalism is set up as a combination of various elements; namely, the triumph of earlier aspects of social realism, the innovative language and style of modernismo, and the poetical revolutions that occurred after World War I. What is most notable in the prose of this period is a stronger sense of Latin American identity. Writers perceive objective reality without economic or political abstractionism. Gone, however, is the 19th century emphasis on the detailed depiction of local customs that were thought of as picturesque, typical, quaint. In the place of costumbrismo, we find an increased awareness of the uniqueness and power of Latin American nature. For example, one of the major writers of this period, Ciro Alegría (Perú, 1909-1967; El mundo es ancho y ajeno / Broad and Alien is the World, 1941), called attention to the "acción monstruosa de la naturaleza salvaje frente a los conatos civilizadores del hombre" (monstrous action of wild nature opposing the civilizing efforts of man). This regionalista approach to nature lacks the idealization of Nature found in the humanities of the Romantic Period at the beginning of the 19th century. In the humanistic movement of regionalismo, however, nature is seen as an uncontrollable force which requires humans to be integrated with the countryside on the one hand, and with the artistic or humanistic structure of the humanistic artifact, whether it be a novel, a short story, a play, or a painting.

A tour de force, Amulet is a highly charged first-person, semi-hallucinatory novel that embodies in one woman's voice the melancholy and violent recent history of Latin America.Amulet is a monologue, like BolaГ±o's acclaimed debut in English, By Night in Chile. The speaker is Auxilio Lacouture, a Uruguayan woman who moved to Mexico in the 1960s, becoming the "Mother of Mexican Poetry," hanging out with the young poets in the cafГ©s and bars of the University. She's tall, thin, and blonde, and her favorite young poet in the 1970s is none other than Arturo Belano (BolaГ±o's fictional stand-in throughout his books). As well as her young poets, Auxilio recalls three remarkable women: the melancholic young philosopher Elena, the exiled Catalan painter Remedios Varo, and Lilian Serpas, a poet who once slept with Che Guevara. And in the course of her imaginary visit to the house of Remedios Varo, Auxilio sees an uncanny landscape, a kind of chasm. This chasm reappears in a vision at the end of the book: an army of children is marching toward it, singing as they go. The children are the idealistic young Latin Americans who came to maturity in the '70s, and the last words of the novel are: "And that song is our amulet.". Through close textual analysis, it examines who these lost subjects are, why they get lost, and what the ramifications of being lost are for their respective societies and the world at large. The time period that the plots of these works cover (1968 to present) is one marked by socio-economic shifts, responsible for spurring the alienation of the subjects of these texts.
