4 Stoney Park Allotments

Stoney Park has been allotment gardens since 1862 and is situated at the end of Higher Furzeham Road. All ages have plots and the committee has just arranged to make a raised bed area as well. There is also a community allot- ment for anyone wishing to join in; anyone interested please contact The Edge 851414 or 411154. The market stall at the entrance of the allotment is for the sale of holders’ excess plants and vegetables. We also have a compost toilet on site and have long term biodiversity plans involving conservation awareness.

The new polytunnel has been built through a grant of £2,500 from Brixham Town Council, and bays in it are available for rent. There is a strong sense of community and everyone is approachable for advice and we have regular social events such as gardener’s question time and barbeques for members. We are holding a Scarecrow making afternoon on 4th August 2pm to 4pm and will be open to the public for National Allotment Week on the 11th of August 2pm to 4pm, so please come and meet us and have a look round. Anyone wishing to apply for a plot please contact the Chairman, Simon, on 850718.

Taking part in the carnival is a real experience. Its great fun and a joy to be a part of something that brings the whole town together. The procession starts off from the park at 6:30pm this year being led by the pipe band. The route follows through Milton Street, Bolton Street, Middle Street and Fore Street and disbands at the bottom of Rea Barn Road. There is plenty of opportunity to stand and watch along the route but if you belong to a group or a club or have some great friends who enjoy dressing up and having a laugh why not enter yourself? YOUR CARNIVAL NEEDS YOU! To enable our carnival parade to take place we need volunteers to man the road closures, which takes ap- proximately two hours of your time. Brixham Sea Anglers We are very proud to be celebrating the achievement of our Clubs’ 100 year anniversary this year. As one of the oldest and most successful angling club in the country, which began life at the ice factory in King Street with a few anglers getting together and has pro- gressed to a clubhouse in Castor Rd with several hun- dred members who are provided with such facilities as bingo, pool, snooker, darts, skittles, discos and reasona- bly priced Sunday lunches. Over the years our anglers have caught many re- cord fish, not least world record Conger Eel, caught by Vic Evans, which is on display at the club. Brixham club is the birthplace of wreck angling in the 1960’s with the pioneers D Stone, E Passmore and J Trust. During August we are holding events to cele- brate, including crabbing competitions (see the ‘Out and About’ section). Two charities will be supported by these events, the Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and C.L.I.C (Children’s cancer care). Anyone wishing to join our club for social activi- ties are welcome to do so. Enquiries can be made at the clubhouse or on 853930. Rita Blackmore, President.

Animals in Distress volunteers needed In 1981 3 ladies from Torquay started selling bric-a -brac from a garage attached to one of their homes; from these small beginnings Animals in Distress was born. Today we operate our Rescue Centre from a three & a half acre site in . It has a block of kennels, a two storey cattery & a new house for rabbits & guinea pigs – possibly the biggest rabbit hutch in the world. We also have a small in-house veterinary unit. At Animals in Distress we undertake to care for any unwanted domestic pet brought to us, providing it is suitable for re-homing & we have available accommoda- tion at the Rescue Centre. We will never have an animal put to sleep unless, on veterinary advice, it is too ill or dangerous to be re-homed. Running the Rescue Centre & helping look after our animals, we are extremely fortunate to have a team of dedicated staff , supported by equally dedicated volun- teers & student placements. This work is funded largely by the money generated by our eleven charity shops. Our shop in Brixham is looking for volunteers; if you can spare some time during the week please phone them on 01803 883692 or visit the shop at 23 Bolton Street, they will be delighted to meet you. Many of you responded and all the names were considered by the Finance & General Purposes Committee, who awarded the grant to the Brixham Gig Club to help buy the gig. Brixham will celebrate its Christmas Lights Switch on with a ‘Lanterns, Lights and ’Luminations’ parade with recycling as the core spirit of the event. Brixham’s Town Council and Chamber of Commerce are looking for thousands of recy- cled objects to be transformed into lanterns to remind every- one of the importance of recycling, traditional lanterns are also welcome! Cllr Martyn Hodge, Chair of the Community Services Committee said “we are asking everyone to start saving jam jars, tissue paper, old 4pt / 6pt milk bottles, 2 litre bottles, old paper lamp shades, mulberry paper, unwanted artificial flowers, buttons, beads, ribbons, paper plates, paper cups

etc, anything that can be transformed into beautiful and amazing lanterns.” Lantern making workshops will be held at the beginning of November, dates of which will be published in October. These work- shops will help you make both traditional lanterns and recycled lanterns. But that’s not stopping you from making them at home too. Get together with your friends, family, school, clubs or youth groups to create an inspirational masterpiece. Brixham’s Town Council and Chamber of Commerce are working together to ensure that this year’s event stands out, prompting visitors to want to join us for the weekend of 23rd and 24th Nov. Brixham Christmas Market The parade also coincides with the Brixham Christmas market which will be held in Brixham’s Scala Hall. The hall will be festooned with bells and holly, so with the Christmas music and chil- dren’s entertainment that is also planned there will be enough to keep everyone entertained! Stallholder packs, giving all the information about trading in the market and booking details are available for anyone wishing to have a market stall. To receive a copy please contact Brixham Town Council on 01803 859678 or email brixhampar- [email protected].
