SINGH Wildlife Circle, Sardar Baug, Junagadh, Gujarat (India) E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) is a flagship species of the semi-arid dry deciduous forest tracts of Gujarat in Saurashtra. The species was critically endangered and the numbers had drastically reduced from its historic range due to loss of habitat and hunting. A ban on hunting was enforced in the last remnant pocket of their territory, the Gir forests by the erstwhile Nawab of Junagadh. Post-independence, due to the persistent efforts of the State Forest Department with the continuous support of local people, the population has been rescued from the brink of extinction and now the number has reached to 523 in 2015. Because of this the species has been upgraded to Endangered Category of the IUCN. This poses a globally acclaimed conservation success story of a large carnivore. The lion population once confined to about 1800 km2 of Gir forest area now occupies an area of 7000 km2 and is distributed in about 12000 km2 area of Saurashtra region, Greater Gir landscape of Gujarat, thus reclaiming its lost territory. This paper discusses the various measures and actions that were taken to ensure that this unique species could be conserved in its native range and to ensure long term conservation in a dynamic habitat.

Gujarat’s Gir Sanctuary Now Has 523 Asiatic Lions Gopal B Kateshiya According to 2015 census, there are 109 male, 201 female and 213 sub-adult lions in the wilderness of these four districts. Even as the Supreme Court of Indian has ordered trans location of endangered Asiatic lions from Gir forest in Gujarat to Madhya Pradesh in best interest of species, the population of the Jungle King has gone up from 411 in year 2010 to 523 in the year 2015. At a press conference held in Sasan Gir, the headquarters of Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (GNPWS) in Junagadh on Sunday, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel announced results of lion census 2015. According to results of the 14th lion census, there are 523 Asiatic lions in Gir forest, other protected areas and revenue areas in Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts of Saurashtra region of Gujarat. This means the population has increased by 112 as compared to the figure of 411 counted in 2010. According to 2015 census, there are 109 male, 201 female and 213 sub-adult (lion cubs below the age of three years) lions in the wilderness of these four districts. These numbers were 97, 162 and 152 respectively in year 2010. This is the only wild population of Asiatic lions in the world and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a world body working for conservation of nature and wildlife has categorised the species as endagered. The CM said 268 lions were counted in Junagadh district while 44 were there in neighbouring Gir Somnath.

14th Lion Population Estimation Report– 2015 th 14 Lion Population Estimation – 2015 Asiatic Lion population estimate is an integral part of wildlife management in the area known as Asiatic Lion Landscape, which includes Gir National Park and Sanctuary, falling in 8 Districts, viz. Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Rajkot, Gir Somnath, Botad and Jamnagar. Asiatic Lion is endangered species, scheduled at Schedule-I in Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 which is present in the local areas of Asiatic Lion Landscape. It is imperative to know the population estimation and population trend of key species like Asiatic Lion. Three geographic populations of lions on the basis of their recent evolutionary history is categorized, namely, North African Asian, southern African and middle African populations (Barnett et al., 2006). Today, two distinct subspecies of extant lions, namely, Panthera leo leo and Panthera leo persica have been recognized that have diverged in recent times. The free ranging lions today exist as two disjunct populations: Panthera leo leo in Africa and Panthera leo persica in India. The former are presently found in savannah habitats across sub- Saharan Africa while the only living representatives of the latter occur in the Gir Forest, in western India (Nowell and Jackson, 1996). Figure 1: Map showing Gir National Park and Sanctuary The Gir forest is well known all over the world for the only wild gene pool and for the last home of the ‘Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica)’. The only surviving free-ranging population of the Asiatic lion exists in the Gir forest, Gujarat, India. However, the Asiatic lion historically had a wide distribution.
