Cost: $40 | Register today at: www.susp.org Military Psychiatrists — It has been an honor to serve you. The Society of Uniformed Services Psychiatrists (SUSP) is the only military District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Our membership includes psychiatrists stationed and deployed around the world along with those who have served and continue to prioritize military . Given these specifics, SUSP has the unique responsibility of connecting, educating, and inspiring military psychiatrists. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the SUSP Leadership, SUSP has continued to update and advance its capability Eric G. Meyer, MD, to more effectively and efficiently achieve this mission. President We have continued to expand our continuing medical education opportunities – to include the creation of military specific training that is available to all psychiatrists. These lectures have received more than 750 views. These efforts were recognized as an APA Best Practice. We have also continued to develop our annual TriService Military Psychiatry meeting. Started in 2017, the TriService meeting will continue to provide unique military psychiatry education in conjunction with the APA annual meeting, and, new to 2019, will include military psychiatrists from NATO countries. Also new to this year, we will be combining the TriService Meeting with our Annual Meeting and Reception. This move should make it easier for members to attend SUSP events and other APA programming. I am excited to see you all at the Marine Corps Memorial Club – which is incidentally the location of my first SUSP meeting as a resident. SUSP has also worked to expand our awards program. Last year we added the Thomas Salmon Award for distinguished service, complementing our historical “Al” Glass Award for resident research. This year we are adding an award for operational psychiatry – keeping pace with the changing dynamics of the military. In addition to these awards we have continued to promote our student travel awards – ensuring those students who are interested in psychiatry find a place to connect with future mentors. SUSP membership also provides members with a means to maintain membership despite moving across around the globe. Affiliate membership is also an option, providing members with the ability to network locally (critical for our members who rely on local civilian hospital) while still providing access to SUSP benefits and networks. Last, but not least, this year four SUSP members became APA fellows and an incredible six members achieved the APA’s distinguished fellow status. You are an inspiring group to lead. I am proud to be a SUSP member and proud of the military psychiatry history that SUSP represents. Our committee members and teams continue to work tirelessly to promote and preserve this unique organization in support of the military . If you are not a member, please consider joining SUSP today. If you are a member, I encourage you to bring your ideas and energy to our organization. We exist to help each other make military psychiatry better.
