Biographical/Historical note

Revs. George Daniel (1875-1934) and Emma Bancroft Yinger (1875-1960) The daughter of Elmer and Harriet (“Hattie”) May Brown Bancroft, Emma (“Emza”) Bancroft was born 1875 May 9 in Lenawee County, MI. She had four brothers: Edward, Pearl J., James, and Donald; two sisters: Elinor Snyder and Hattie Mae Day; two half-brothers: Emory and Archie (mother, Hattie Lamont). Her aunts and uncles included Clara Ganun [Clark?], Jennifer DeMiller, Flora Pope, George, and Martin. Emma was educated in the public schools, at Raisin Valley Seminary and Defiance College. She graduated from Albion in 1904. While at Defiance, she was a student minister in a nearby country church, making the eight-mile trip in a horse and buggy. She married the Rev. George D. Yinger in 1903 and with him served Methodist churches in Hanover, Horton, Concord, Bellevue, Union City, Quincy, Nashville, St. Louis, Greenville, Grand Rapids Plainfield Avenue, South Haven, and Three Rivers. Both Rev. Mr. and Rev. Mrs. Yinger were known as gifted preachers. George Daniel Yinger was born to Daniel and Helen Yinger, near Homer, MI in 1875. He had two brothers: Floyd E. (d. 1932) and Gabriel J. Yinger; and two sisters: Mrs. Norris G. Olney and Mrs. Peter Turner. His grandparents were John and Mary Yinger. George D. was a graduate of Albion College in 1903. George D. was known among members of the Methodist conference as a “church builder” for his work rehabilitating and remodeling churches in South Haven and Horton. His other charges included Grand Rapids, Greenville, St. Louis, Bellevue, and Union City. He taught music in the public schools in his youth, the love of which he carried with him and spread to his congregations and other family members. George D. died in 1934 while serving as pastor at Three Rivers. Mrs. Yinger lived in Greencastle, Indiana, after Mr. Yinger’s death, while three of her children were in school there. She then preached in Hanover and Horton, after which she served in the State School for the Blind in Lansing. During World War II Mrs. Yinger taught at the Houston School near Marshall. She continued her residence in Marshall until she retired. In 1947 the Rev. Mrs. Yinger was named “Mother of Michigan.” She was the first ordained woman Methodist minister in Marshall and one of the first in the Methodist ministry. Her eight children were all prominent in ministerial and educational circles. She was also well-known for her published poetry, including Life and Love, Complementary Mysteries (1949), The Key to Peace (1959). In January of 1960 she was recognized as a minister and poet in the first edition of Who’s Who of American Women, which named about 3,000 women as “outstanding.” Mrs. Yinger died at the age of 85 in November 1960 at Friendship Haven, Ft. Dodge, Iowa, where she had been a resident since she retired in April of 1960. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albion, MI.

- Page 10 - Yinger Family Papers C.MSS.0013 The Yinger Singers (From “Twelve Yinger Singers Notable Chorus: Uniting Sextette, Quartettes and Duos Long Popular for Organ-like Harmony and Sparking Versatility.” When the late Rev. George D. Yinger was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Quincy, MI, he began to train his four oldest children with rare directing ability. Their ages then ranged from five to ten, the youngest being able to carry the melody in four part harmony with accuracy and skill. The “Yinger Juvenile Quartet” was immediately popular. It caught the ear of the manager of a small Chautauqua, and sand in a regular lyceum circuit that first summer. This original quartet, through the years sand together before hundred of audiences—in evening concerts, on the great Methodist Centenary program in Columbus, in the cantonments during the war—and one year its members were enrolled as freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior in Albion College, during which time they sand in 133 concerts throughout the middle west as “The Yinger Quartet of Albion College.” They were noted for exquisite harmony and charm. When this older quartet left home to go to college, a unique situation still prevailed. There remained at home four more children so nearly counterparts of the older four that strangers hearing the younger quartet were astonished that the Yinger children had changed so little. Building on the experience of the older group, these children perfected many difficult musical arrangements. In 1928 the two older boys married talented girls who, combined with the original quartet formed the organization known as the “Yinger Sextette of Boston University.” There three young men and three young women all attended Boston University as regularly enrolled students, defraying expenses by concert singing in 99 different programs in New England communities. The quartet also sang regularly on Sunday mornings in the First M. E. Church of Boston. The following year the Sextette traveled from coast to coast, singing to large and enthusiastic audiences. During the school year of 1933-34 another combination was formed. The third son had married a young woman talented not only in music but in chalk artistry. This couple, with the three youngest boys of the family entered DePauw University and became known as the “Yinger Singers of DePauw University.” These various groups have received plaudits from musicians, governors, bishops, outstanding clergymen and laymen from one end of America to the other. In later years, the Twelve Yinger Singers Notable Chorus was formed, which included all the Yinger children but Paul, as well as four of the boys’ wives, Ruth, Aileen, Alberta, and Madelon. “The Yinger Yarner” This publication was sent out once a month to members of the Yinger family all over the country. It was a mimeographed newsletter printed by the Yingers. Each of the family branches contributed news to its columns, saving a lot of time and money in correspondence.

- Page 11 - Yinger Family Papers C.MSS.0013 As many of the members of the Yinger family were Methodist pastors, there are a number of items relating to their work in the church. The collection consists of 14 series: Series I, George Daniel and Emma Bancroft Yinger, is arranged by subseries, including Certificates and Awards; Clippings; Correspondence; Journals; Notes and Receipts; Photographs; Poetry; Scrapbooks and Albums; Sermons, Essays, Addresses and Reports; Albion College; and Church Documents. It was difficult to discern at times between Emma Bancroft Yinger’s journals, notebooks of poetry and scrapbooks. Each has a combination of photographs, clippings, imagery, and writings, but the bulk content of the materials within the books determined where they would live in the organizational schema of the collection. The materials are organized by series, which is determined by type of document or subject matter, and then chronologically. The largest series of material are her correspondence and writings. Series II, Elmer and Hattie Mae Bancroft, is arranged chronologically. The undated materials are organized by type of material: correspondence, poetry, other writings. Series III, The Clement Bancroft and Aileen Humphrey Yinger Family, is arranged chronologically. In addition to material related to Clement and Aileen, this series contains material related to their children, Winthrop Bancroft and Pamela Kay as well. Series IV, The George Dempster and Ruth Mastin Yinger Family, is arranged chronologically. In addition to material related to George and Ruth, this series contains material related to their daughter, Yvonne Yinger Quinlan. Series V, Edgar and Eunice Yinger Walton, is arranged chronologically. Series VI, The Homer Vincent Sr. and Alberta Porter Yinger Family, is arranged by subseries, including Church Documents, Correspondence, Photographs, Sermons, Albion College, and Clippings. In addition to material related to Homer Sr. and Alberta, this series contains material related to their children Emelyn, Homer Vincent Jr., and Karen. Series VII, The Floyd Wendell and Madelon Haring Yinger Family, is arranged chronologically. In addition to material related to Floyd and Madelon, this series contains material related to their daughter, Stephanie. Floyd Wendell Yinger is not to be confused with Floyd E. Yinger or Floyd Erwin Yinger. In addition to information on Paul and Harriet, this series contains information related to their daughter Marilyn.
