Francis Joseph Lee (c. 1857, London – 12 September 1909, London) was an English chess master. Chess career Lee played in a number of matches, and British and international chess tournaments, between 1883 and 1907.[1] In the Master Section of the 3rd British Chess Federation (BCF) Congress at London 1887 (won by Amos Burn andIsidor Gunsberg, he finished 6th out of 10 players, scoring 3.5 out of a possible 9 points.[2] In the Master Section at the 4th BCF Championship at Bradford1888 (won by Gunsberg), he finished 14th of 17 players, scoring 5 of a possible 16 points.[3] In a tournament held at Simpson's Divan in London in 1888, he finished 9th of 18 players, scoring 9 out a possible 17 points.[4] That same year, he lost a match to Gunsberg at Bradford, scoring just two draws in five games.[5] In the Master Section of the 5th BCF Congress at London 1889, he finished 6th-8th of 11 players, scoring 5 out of a possible 10 points.[6] In the Master Section of the 6th BCF Congress at Manchester 1890 (won by Siegbert Tarrasch), he finished 12th-13th out of 20, scoring 9 of a possible 19 points.[7] In an 1890 match in London, Lee had what Chessmetrics considers his best result, losing a match toJoseph Henry Blackburne (2 wins, 6 draws, 6 losses).[8] Lee also lost matches to Emanuel Lasker (0.5 : 1.5) at London 1891, Richard Teichmann (3.5 : 5.5) at London 1898 and (2.5 : 5.5) at London 1901, and won two matches against Henry Bird (8 : 5 and 5 : 3) at London 1897. He also participated in two cable matches between England and the United States in 1901 and 1902.[9][10] Lee took 4th at Belfast 1892 (Quadrangular), shared 3rd at New York 1893 (Lasker won with a perfect score), tied for 10-11th at Barmen 1905 (B tournament, Leo Fleischmann won), and tied for 25-26th at Ostend 1907 chess tournament(Masters' Tournament, Ossip Bernstein and Akiba Rubinstein won).[10] Lee won the South African Chess Championship in 1903. He participated in British Chess Championships at Hastings 1904, Shrewsbury 1906, Tunbridge Wells 1908, and Scarborough 1909. He died on 12 September 1909, at the age of 52.[11] Chess books[ The Complete Chess-Guide by F. J. Lee and George H. D. Gossip(1903) Lee and George H. D. Gossip co-wrote the books The Chess Player's Mentor (1895) and The Complete Chess-Guide (1903).[12] The latter was in effect a much-expanded version of the former, containing "Chess Player's Mentor" (Part I), "Modern Chess Brilliancies" (Part II), "Guide to the Openings" (Part III), and "Games at Odds" (Part IV).[13] Chess strength By Arpad Elo's calculation, Lee's strength during his five-year peak was equivalent to an Elo rating of 2450.[14] Another assessment system, Chessmetrics, calculates that at his peak in February 1898 Lee's play was equivalent to a rating of 2598, and he was the number 25 player in the world.     Otto Wegemund Otto Wegemund (1870 – 5 October 1928) was a German chess master. He participated many times in Berlin City Chess Championship; took 6th in 1906 (Erich Cohn won), took 10th in 1908 (Wilhelm Cohn won), took 10th in 1910 (Carl Ahues won), tied for 7-8th in 1920 (Ernst Schweinburg won), tied for 5-6th in 1924 (Ahues and Richard Teichmann won), shared 4th in 1925 (Friedrich Sämisch won), and tied for 9-10th in 1927 (Berthold Koch won).[1] He also played several times in the DSB Congress. Among others, he shared 6th at Coburg 1904 (Hauptturnier B, Hans Fahrni won), took 9th at Breslau 1912 (Hauptturnier B, Paul Krüger won), shared 1st with Wilhelm Hilse at Hamburg 1921 (Hauptturnier B), tied for 8-10th at Bad Oeynhausen 1922 (Ehrhardt Post won),[2] and took 8th at Frankfurt 1923 (Ernst Grünfeld won).[3] In other tournaments, he took 5th at Berlin 1917 (Walter John and Paul Johner won),[4] took 2nd, behind John, at Breslau 1918,[5] and took 11th at Berlin 1920 (Alexey Selezniev won). Šachy se učil hrát od roku 1848[1] se svým přítelem ze školy, ale nebral je nijak vážně, dokud se v roce 1858 nepřestěhoval do Vídně, kde studoval matematiku a pokušel se stát se novinářem[1]. Poté co z finančních a také ze zdravotních důvodů neuspěl, začal hrát šachy ve vídeňské kavárně Romer. V roce 1859 skončil na přeboru Vídně (Wiener Schachgesellschaft) na třetím místě1, v roce 1860 byl druhý1 a v roce 1861 jej vyhrál impozantním výsledkem třiceti bodů z 31 partií a získal přezdívku rakouský Morphy[1]. Po neúspěchu na šachovém turnaji v Londýně roku 1862, kde skončil až na šestém místě (turnaj vyhrál Adolf Anderssen), se Steinitz rozhodl zůstat v britské metropoli, tehdejším „středu“ šachového světa. Brzy pak bylo všem zřejmé, že Anderssenovi, „úřadujícímu“ prvnímu hráči světa, roste ve Steinitzovi velmi vážný soupeř.

It covers events that took place before the 1890s (from the beginning of time to 1889). 1497 Luis Ramirez de Lucena (Spain) published in Salamanca the oldest known chess book, Repetición de Amores y Arte de Ajedrez con 101 Juegos de Partido (Repetition of Love and the Art of Playing Chess). 1749 Francois Andre Danican Philidor (France) published the first edition of his famous book Analyse du jeu des Échecs (The Analysis of the Game of Chess). 1 1755 In 1755, Francois-Andre Danican Philidor (France) won a match against Francois Antoine de Legall de Kermeur (France) and became the unofficial world champion. Philidor’s reign lasted until his death in 1795. Copié La presentación en sociedad del quien luego fuera considerado el padre del Estudio moderno en ajedrez proviene, ya hace 120 años, de la mítica publicación francesa La Stratégie. Mikhail Chigorin (1850-1908) también considerado como el padre de la escuela rusa de ajedrez, el que a la sazón escribía notas sobre ajedrez para ese medio especializado, sin duda debe haber intercedido por medio del director de La Stratégie, Numa Preti, recomendando al joven, poco conocido en ese entonces, Alexey Troitzky, pero que era participe de los círculos ajedrecísticos de San Petersburgo; siendo estudiante en dicha ciudad se vinculó con Chigorin y eso sin duda fue fundamental para su progreso en el ajedrez y en la composición en particular.
