They formed a magazine division in 1953 starting with Angling Times, Trout and Salmon, and Garden News. They acquired Motor Cycle News (for £100) and launched Popular Classics in 1988 which became a ‘best seller’. In 1996, Practical Classics (founded in 1979) absorbed Popular Classics. Practical Classics is still in publication today and recognizes their heritage in their masthead. The June 1994 issue of Popu- lar Classics , Vol. 5, No. 10, carries a feature article on the ‘S’-type, with a photo on the cover. The cover photo is captioned “A1 JAGUAR! Driving the Great North Road in an ‘S’-type.” The contents page adds that the six-page article is, “Tracing the Great North Road in a Fast Jag.” For that 370-mile exploration of the ‘old’ A1, the journalist wrote (in 1994), “… I had to find an appropriate car, something fast and comfortable. A Jaguar ‘S’-type, for example.” The car they found has a ‘film’ history and the author writes, ”You might recognize this particular car if you caught any of the BBC TV series The Underworld,. Page 2 (Continued on page 6) Volume 8, Number 1 The Story of 1B77086BW—2 It’s amazing what you find after you steam clean a car! The inside of the engine bay once cleaned of all the oil and dirt hardly had any paint on the panels. I decided to take out the engine and gear- box and to paint the engine bay, so the car was then a rolling chassis. The body has been stripped of all its accessories and it was only a matter of taking off all of the old Dove Grey paint ready for its new coats of Old English white. Rather than do this by hand I con- tacted a local company who grit blasts metal and have in the past completed some classic cars including an E-type Jag- uar. For the handsome price of £300 they agreed to blast the body and wheels for me if I delivered it to them. All the car- pets and under lay were removed. I had arranged for these repair panels to be sent to me prior to the blast- ing. The car was taken from the blast- ing booth and the metal grit blown off. We received a 2014 calendar for Christmas – with our beloved ‘S’-types on it. It was sent by Stuart Exelby, of Police Car UK (http://www.policecaruk.com/), which is devoted to ‘Promoting The New, Preserving The Past - Celebrating More Than 60 Years Of Police Jaguars’. Their website is well worth a visit, with many period stories and photos as well as restored police vehicles. The Police Car UK 2014 calendar has three photos of ‘S’-type police cars: on the front cover; March; and on the back cover. Other Jaguar police cars shown are a Mk 1, Leicestershire Mk 2, Staffordshire Mk 2, Glouscester Mk 2, Somerset/Bath 240, Kent 240, Metropolitan police XJ6 Series 3, Thames Valley XJ6 Series 2, Jaguar demonstrator XJ40, Manchester Mk 2, Staffs and Stoke on Trent 240. There are also photos of a Hampshire Series 3 XJ6, West Yorkshire XJ6 Series 1, West Midlands XJ40, and West Yorkshire Series 2 XJ6. Stuart tells us that there are only a few remaining, so if you are interested, there is a place at the bottom of their website (http://www.policecaruk.com/) to enquire for a quote for full price mailed to your country. The calendar is priced at £4.00 (US$6.55) plus postage. Police Car UK had three ‘S’-type police car on their stand at the Classic Motor Show, held at the National Exhibition Centre, in Birmingham UK, in November 2013. Jaguar World Monthly, in reporting on the Police Car UK stand in their January 2014 issue said that they, “… displayed Jaguar saloons from a 240 through to a modern S-TYPE. It was a stunning – if slightly scary – range of models and illustrated Jaguar’s long connection with the force.” The ‘S’-type significant place in this storied history was documented in many Newsletters, most recently Vol. 7, Nos. 3E & 4E.

It was founded in 1998 by three ’S’-type owners, to promote the preservation, maintenance and restoration – but mostly the enjoyment - of Jaguars 'Best Sports Saloon'. The Register records the details of surviving 'S'- type Jaguars and, its founding, has received data on more than 500 cars from nineteen countries.
