Rt Hon PRIME MINISTER I join with you in this celebration and wish you all the best.

Len Brown Mayor of Auckland

I wish you and your families Shubh D iwali and happy New Year.

Diwali in Aotearoa is not just a celebration of an ancient festival; it is the celebration of our South A sian identity. It’s a reminder that New Zealand Indians are a precious part of our culture, enriching us all.

This year I am aware of 11 major Diwali celebrations at which thousands of New Zealanders will be present. I or my MPs will be attending all of them.

For me, the lighting of the lamp that symbolises k nowledge is most signicant. I am a former teacher, from a family of teachers -- education is very important to me. I enjoy lighting the lamp of knowledge and reecting on learning and wisdom. It’s a great metaphor.

It’s also very meaningful to remember that people have been doing this, and observing other Diwali traditions with their families for 5000 years.

I would like to thank the Indian c ommunity in New Zealand for your hard work and contribution to our economic, social and cultural life. We acknowledge you all today and we celebrate wit h you.

Enjoy exchanging your gifts and sharing good food wi th your families. I wish you Happy Diwali and a Happy New Year.ear.
