LEXICON Volume 5, Number 1, April 2018, 84-94 Slang in American and British Hip-Hop/Rap Song Lyrics Tessa Zelyana Hidayat*, Rio Rini Diah Moehkardi Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia *Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This research examines semantic changes and also the associative patterns of slang, focusing primarily on common topics, i.e., people and drugs. The data were slang terms taken from the lyrics of hip-hop/rap songs sung by four singers, two from the U.S.A and two from the U.K. A total of 105 slang terms were found, 45 of which belong to the people category and 16 to the drugs category in the American hip-hop/rap song lyrics, and in the British hip-hop/rap song lyrics, 26 of which belong to the people category and 18 to the drugs category. Bitch and nigga were found to be the most frequently used slang terms in the people category. In terms of semantic changes, broadening, amelioration, and narrowing were found, and in terms of associative patterns, effect, appearance, way of consuming, constituent, and container associative patterns were found. In addition, a new associative pattern was found, i.e., place of origin. Keywords: associative patterns, people and drugs slang, semantic change, slang. mislead people outside their group. This book sets out to examine the effects of the Great Recession on youth employment. employmentYouth Despite considerable variation across Europe, even in better-performing countries significant pockets of youth struggled to make successful and sustainable transitions into employment. The contributions to this volume summarise the findings of a large-scale EU funded project on Strategic Transitions for Youth Labour in Europe (STYLE). The project provides a comprehensive analysis of the causes of youth unemployment and assesses the effectiveness of labour market policies. Authors here discuss the distinctive characteristics of the current phase of youth employment including labour market flexibility, skills mismatch, migration, family legacies, and the increasing role for EU policy learning and transfer.

"DREAM ON" LYRICS AND LINER NOTES "Dream On" CD: our sixth studio album Anya & Robert Recordings #5107 Recorded July 17, 18, and 19, 2017 by John Kilgore at John Kilgore Sound & Recording NYC Mastered by Alan Silverman, ARF Mastering NYC Anya Turner: vocals Robert Grusecki: piano, vocals All songs by Turner & Grusecki (ASCAP) Copyright © 2017 Turner & Grusecki All rights reserved Total running time: 50:49 CD jacket design: Aaron Morishita Front cover photo: Carol Rosegg Back cover photo: Julie Turner Names, characters, places, events, and incidents in these songs and stories are either products of the authors' imaginations or used in a fictitious manner. DREAM ON is about our belief in the human spirit, the idea that language matters, the sense that music can uplift, and the conviction that two kids from the Midwest, now veteran performers, have something to say and can still say it. And we believe that all of this can be expressed through the art of piano/vocal music. Thematically, more often than not the songs we hear in the mainstream are about sex: wanting to have sex, having sex, or wishing you hadn't had sex. We cover that and a few other topics that also might be of interest to people. The making of DREAM ON was an experiment from start to finish, beginning with the decision to film the recording sessions. The CD and soundtrack were recorded and filmed in a small recording studio in midtown Manhattan over the course of three days without the use of headphones, with the piano lid open and with the two of us facing each other in the same room.

Teacher Guide - Music Magazine Resources Magazine Mastheads An interactive activity which introduces students to some of the more well-known mastheads from music magazines. Some words are in bold to draw the students’ attention and they can begin compiling a list of media terminology. Students have to match up the mastheads with their meanings, they do this by dragging and dropping the boxes around the screen. When complete, there is a question about the colour scheme of the mastheads. Responses the students may come up with are: • Connotations of red – warning, danger, love, power, strength, masculine • They may say red is a powerful colour suggesting dominance or importance • They may suggest that the red and white are highly contrasting so allow the masthead to stand out on newsstands. Magazine Front Covers Labelling activities will help the students familiarise themselves with the terminology used to talk about magazines. This task will also encourage them to begin to understand what the code and conventions are of the genre.
