  • In the Winter Dark Tail Credits
Tail voice over: After Maurice has shot his wife Ida, he heads up the hill to his dying wife. He holds her in his arms and sobs as she dies. Jacob gets Ronnie out of the vehicle and pushes the flat bed Toyota upright. Maurice grabs a shovel and begins to dig a grave for his wife. Jacob carries Ronnie to the truck, and they drive off into the darkness, while Maurice begins the job of digging a hole, pausing to watch the Toyota disappear into the night. Then the image cuts to Maurice sitting on the verandah of his home in pre-dawn light, at first in close up. As his voice over unfolds, the camera pulls back to offer a wide shot of him on the verandah : Maurice (v/o): “Some nights I sit here and talk and stare, and stay out until the break of day …waiting, hoping. There’s been no blue lights, no detectives, no sign of Jacob or Ronnie or her musician boyfriend … and it’s been almost a year… (A kookaburra begins to sound over a wide shot of the dawn light falling on the pasture and the bush). … Sometimes I see a shadow … (ECU of his eyes) …between the trees. But I know to leave these things alone now …(back to a wide shot of him on the verandah, now with dawn light on it) …I make my confession, wait for redemption …or punishment …(a shot of the sun rising over a distant hill, bathing the screen in a yellow hazy glow) …but there’s only the sun rise … Music swells, fade to black, and end credits begin to roll ..

  • MICHAEL YEZERSKI Composer FILM CREDITS
MICHAEL YEZERSKI Composer Michael Yezerski’s musical works are highly evocative, original and diverse. From the symphonic grittiness of THE TAX COLLECTOR to the quiet drama of BLINDSPOTTING; from the avant- garde horror drones of THE DEVIL’S CANDY to the heartfelt FEEL THE BEAT and THE BLACK BALLOON; Michael brings a signature musical intensity to every project he takes on. Hailing originally from Australia, and with a background in both contemporary concert music and electronic music production, Michael blends styles and influences in a way that pushes the boundaries of what dramatic film music can be. Rich in technique and sitting comfortably at the border with avant-garde music design, Michael’s work is nevertheless fundamentally human and melodic at its core. Born in Sydney, Michael is a multiple award-winning composer who creates music that is shaped from the perspective of an outsider – constantly fluid, ever changing, unbound by system – curious and always evolving. Recent projects include the hit international series MR INBETWEEN, Keith Thomas’ wondrously terrifying THE VIGIL and the Stephen Dorff starrer DEPUTY for FOX / Cedar Park. Earlier career highlights include HBO’s ONLY THE DEAD SEE THE END OF WAR, his first feature film THE BLACK BALLOON (winner of 8 AFI/AACTA Awards including Best Picture), PJ Hogan’s MENTAL, WOLF CREEK SERIES 2, CATCHING MILAT, PETER ALLEN, the Academy Award winning animated short, THE LOST THING and his collaboration with Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, THE RED TREE. Many of Australia’s greatest radio serials were produced during the 1940s. Among those listed in this guide are the Sunday night one-hour plays - The Lux Radio Theatre and The Macquarie Radio Theatre (becoming the Caltex Theatre after 1947); the many Jack Davey Shows, and The Bob Dyer Show; the Colgate Palmolive variety extravaganzas, headed by Calling the Stars, The Youth Show and McCackie Mansion, which starred the outrageously funny Mo (Roy Rene). Fine drama programs produced in Sydney in the 1940s included The Library of the Air and Max Afford's serial Hagen's Circus. Among the comedy programs listed from this decade are the George Wallace Shows, and Mrs 'Obbs with its hilariously garbled language.

  • Autism and Aspergers in Popular Australian Cinema Post-2000 | Ellis | Disability Studies Quarterly
Autism and Aspergers in Popular Australian Cinema Post-2000 | Ellis | Disability Studies Quarterly Autism & Aspergers In Popular Australian Cinema Post 2000 Reviewed By Katie Ellis, Murdoch University, E-Mail: [email protected] Australian Cinema is known for its tendency to feature bizarre and extraordinary characters that exist on the margins of mainstream society (O'Regan 1996, 261). While several theorists have noted the prevalence of disability within this national cinema (Ellis 2008; Duncan, Goggin & Newell 2005; Ferrier 2001), an investigation of characters that have autism is largely absent. Although characters may have displayed autistic tendencies or perpetuated misinformed media representations of this condition, it was unusual for Australian films to outright label a character as having autism until recent years. Somersault, The Black Balloon, and Mary & Max are three recent Australian films that explicitly introduce characters with autism or Asperger syndrome. Of the three, the last two depict autism with sensitivity, neither exploiting it for the purposes of the main character's development nor turning it into a spectacle of compensatory super ability. The Black Balloon, in particular, demonstrates the importance of the intentions of the filmmaker in including disability among notions of a diverse Australian community. Somersault. Red Carpet Productions. Directed By Cate Shortland 2004 Australia Using minor characters with disabilities to provide the audience with more insight into the main characters is a common narrative tool in Australian cinema (Ellis 2008, 57). Film is a visual medium that adopts visual methods of storytelling, and impairment has become a part of film language, as another variable of meaning within the shot.

  • Racial Tragedy, Australian History, and the New Australian Cinema: Fred Schepisi's the Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith Revisited
FILMHISTORIA Online Vol. 28, núms. 1-2 (2018) · ISSN: 2014-668X Racial Tragedy, Australian History, and the New Australian Cinema: Fred Schepisi’s The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith Revisited ROBERT J. CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978) broke ground in its native country for dealing bluntly with one of the most tragic aspects of Australian history: the racist treatment of the aboriginal population. Adapted faithfully from the 1972 novel by Thomas Keneally, the film concerns a young man of mixed race in turn-of-the-century Australia who feels torn between the values and aspirations of white society, on the one hand, and his aboriginal roots, on the other, and who ultimately takes to violence against his perceived white oppressors. This essay re-views The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith from the following angles: its historical context; its place in the New Australian Cinema; its graphic violence; and the subsequent careers of the film’s director, Fred Schepisi, and its star, Tommy Lewis. Keywords: The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith; Fred Schepisi; Thomas Keneally; New Australian Cinema; racism and colonialism Prior to the late 1970s, Australia was something of a cinematic backwater. Occasionally, Hollywood and British production companies would turn up to use the country as a backdrop for films that ranged from the classic (On the Beach [1959]) to the egregious (Ned Kelly [1970], starring Mick Jagger). But the local movie scene, for the most part, was sleepy and unimaginative and very few Australian films traveled abroad. Then, without warning, Australia suddenly experienced an efflorescence of imaginative filmmaking, as movies such as Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), The Getting of Wisdom (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), and Breaker Morant (1980) began to be shown all over the world.

Shirley (Ella Scott Lynch) is confronted with the return of her first child, and Matron (Mandy McElhinney) is determined to see the re-opening of Stanton House. Joan (Jessica Marais) struggles to have it all – husband, baby and career - and Annie (Gracie Gilbert) struggles to make ends meet. Patty’s (Harriet Dyer) business is booming, whilst Viv (Sophie Hensser) is in desperate search of a connection … and Martha (Miranda Tapsell) is faced with a question that is hard to answer. Times they are a-changing. It’s 1970 and times they are a-changing. The Vietnam War is dividing the world, music and the media are shifting old ideals, and the lines between friendship, love and marriage are blurring. It’s a month after we left the young women of Kings Cross Hospital and Stanton House, and all of them are now in the throes of dealing with the choices and ramifications of the events of series two. Dr Joan Millar (Jessica Marais) continues her career as one of the country’s most promising obstetricians in this brave new world of laparoscopic surgery and burgeoning fertility treatments. But juggling a baby, a husband who is facing manslaughter charges, as well as the inconveniences of living on-site at the hospital, takes its toll. A sudden infection and emergency surgery leaves Joan facing a life of infertility, and it’s not long before she must face the truth of McNaughton’s (Jonathan LaPaglia) part in Greg Mathieson’s death – a death that has led to a manslaughter charge and the possibility of Jim (Matthew Le Nevez) facing 12 years behind bars.

SYNOPSIS Based on a true story: DANGER CLOSE begins with Major Harry Smith [Travis Fimmel], the strict and highly motivated commander of Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, on operation in Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, Vietnam. Delta Company is made up four platoons; 10, 11 and 12 platoons and a Company HQ, a total of 108 men. Harry is a career officer and he has no time to ‘coddle’ or befriend the men in his company. He feels that ‘babysitting’ these young men - half of which are conscripts - is beneath his special forces skills and previous combat experience. But with a point to prove, Harry is keen to show what his men, and importantly, he can do to make the best of a harrowing situation.

unesco creative cities membership monitoring report 2015-17 MEMBERSHIP MONITORING REPORT GENERAL INFORMATION. CONTRIBUTION TO THE NETWORK’S GLOBAL MANAGEMENT. MAJOR INITIATIVES IMPLEMENTED AT LOCAL LEVEL. MAJOR INITIATIVES IMPLEMENTED THROUGH INTER-CITY COOPERATION. PROPOSED ACTION PLAN. ANGELINA JOLIE AT THE SYDNEY PREMIER OF UNBROKEN CONTENTS. 2015-17 MEMBERSHIP MONITORING REPORT With support from the NSW Government, the City of Sydney, and key screen industry stakeholders, Sydney was awarded the UNESCO City of Film designation in December 2010. The existing screen infrastructure in Sydney and the diversity and value of film culture of Sydney was a major reason for the success of Sydney’s bid. It placed Sydney as the second City of Film in the UCCN. As the specialist agency in screen matters, management of the status of the City of Film was given to the former agency Screen NSW, with the agreement of the City of Sydney and the support of the NSW Government and former Minister for the Arts. The UNESCO Creative City designation is consistent with the aims of the NSW Creative Industries Action Plan, which seeks to ensure that NSW, through Sydney, is recognised as a global creative centre and leader in creative industries. Sydney and its surrounds continue to be the location for high levels of both international and local production and post-production, as well as many Australian TV dramas. NSW is the dominant state for screen production in Australia with more than 60% of Australian production and post-production businesses located in here. With a suite of funding opportunities for the professional production sector, from early development to production finance and a range of industry development programs, the organization supports the continued growth and development of a creative sector that returns significant economic benefits, large numbers of jobs and high cultural and social returns to the community.
