I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

  • The Science of Hitting Ted Williams and John Underwood
The Science of Hitting Ted Williams and John Underwood 1970 To the young baseball players of America, who dream, as I did, of becoming great hitters. May this help them on their way. Hitting A baseball—I’ve said it a thousand times—is the single most difficult thing to do in sport. I get raised eyebrows and occasional arguments when I say that, but what is there that is harder to do? What is there that requires more natural ability, more physical dexterity, more mental alertness? That requires a greater finesse to go with physical strength, that has as many variables and as few constants, and that carries with it the continuing frustration of knowing that even if you are a .300 hitter—which is a rare item these days—you are going to fail at your job seven out of ten times? If Joe Namath or Roman Gabriel completed three of every ten passes they attempted, they would be ex-professional quarterbacks. If Oscar Robertson or Rick Barry made three of every ten shots they took, their coaches would take the basketball away from them. Golf? Somebody always mentions golf. You don’t have to have good eyesight to play golf. Tommy Armour was a terrific golfer, and he had no sight in one eye. You have to have good eyesight to hit a baseball. Look at Tony Conigliaro of the Red Sox. Six foot three, beautifully developed, strong, aggressive, stylish, and an injured eye almost ended his career. He can still see all right—the impairment is slight—but there is a question whether he sees well enough to hit.

Emotional Tribute Leaves '72 White Sox in Want of More Posted on Tuesday, June 26 The 1972 White Sox had a rare team unity about it, and the more times have changed over the years, the more they have remained the same, it seems. So moved were team members by the Chicago Baseball Museum-sponsored tribute at U.S. Cellu- lar Field on Monday night, they unanimously agreed not to allow 40 more years to pass before they did it again. “You got it,” Rich (Goose) Gossage declared. “Deal,” Dick Allen agreed. More than 300 enthusiastic fans packed the Sta- dium Club for the event, which was part of the Chicago Baseball Museum's season-long tribute to Allen and The Team That Saved Our Sox. “It was an well-deserved pat on the back to a sig- nificant team that did so much for baseball in the Chicago area,” said Dr. David Fletcher, museum president. “Our organization was honored and privileged to get this group together again.” Roland Hemond receives his 1972 Former players Hank Allen, Tom Bradley, Carlos Executive of the Year Award from May, Bill Melton and Ed Spiezio, player personnel Paul Ladewski nearly 40 years later. director Roland Hemond and organist Nancy Faust also were in attendance. Gossage and Allen drew loud responses in particular. Gossage recounted his days as a Colorado kid who had never experienced life in the big city before. Alone and practically broke, the 19-year-old spent his first night in the major leagues in Armor Square Park across from White Sox Park.
