[email protected] or telephone: 0116 454 1001 East-West Link Road : A Phoenix from the Ashes The East-West Link Road in its various forms has been an idea since 1916. The most recent serious attempt to build a road bridge across Leicester’s green lungs of Aylestone Meadows was in the early nineties when Bede Island was being regenerated. Fortunately, fierce local opposition and ever increasing costs caused councillors at County Hall who were then responsible for building new roads, to abandon the idea. However, Leicester City Council has been consulting about including it in the next Local Plan. The Local Plan is an attempt by the City Council to meet the needs of its citizens for homes, jobs and leisure for the next 15 years. Another round of consultation on the next stage of the Local Plan will take place later this year. The current proposed route is from Narborough Road along Evesham Road and through Aylestone Meadows to Aylestone Road. It will then cross St. Mary’s to join with Saffron Lane. A local campaign group called “End of the Road LE3” wants the City Council to remove it from any future Local Plan.

    1 2 The History of Electricity Supply in 3 4 5 Leicestershire and Rutland up to 6 7 Nationalisation in 1947 8 9 by Peter Neaverson 10 1 2 3 4 This paper seeks to place the development of public electricity supply in 5 Leicestershire and Rutland into the national context. A brief introduction to the 6 technology of electricity generation is followed by a review of the legislation enacted 7 to oversee the standardisation of supply and distribution of power, which 8 culminated in Nationalisation in 1947. Generation of public supplies for electric lighting and traction began in the final two decades of the 19th century and 9 expanded at a rapid rate throughout the first forty years of the 20th, such was the 10 demand for traction, industrial processes, electric motors and heating. The 1 availability of electricity released the industrial and domestic consumer from the 2 restrictions of gas supplies and the dependence of industry upon the gas and steam 3 engine. The development of the Leicester and Loughborough municipal 4 undertakings is dealt with in some detail and sundry other generating plants are 5 described within the constraints of the sources available. 6 7 8 Introduction 9 The phenomenon of the creation of static electricity, using friction to produce an electric 10 charge, has been known for many centuries. These charges could be multiplied and 1 stored in Leyden jars or condensers and machines, such as the Wimshurst, which were 2 often used as playthings, produced spectacular arcs between electrodes. It was the creation 3 of a continuous electric current, as distinct to static charges, which paved the way for the 4 widespread practical application of electricity.
