SE WALES ‘OPEN BOAT GROUP’

“Do you enjoy Open Boating but are struggling to find a club that does enough?” OR “Do you enjoy Open Boating but can’t find people to go paddling with?” OR “Do you enjoy Open Boating but can’t find a way of developing your skills enough to become an independent paddler?” WELL READ ON……… These are just 2 of the comments that I’ve been getting recently from Open Boat paddlers in the South West. I am hearing that there are many Open Boaters (or ‘would be Open Boaters’) who are: ‹ finding it difficult to meet other Open Boaters; ‹ get out paddling on a regular basis; ‹ Struggling to find the support to develop their skills enough in order to become independent paddlers.

Therefore, depending on the interest, I am looking to start a group (possibly even a club) for enthusiastic Open Boaters. If you’re interested in finding out more, please e-mail me at the usual address: [email protected]

Look forward to hearing from you. Paul Samuel RCO SE Wales WCA Open Canoe Development Programme Autumn 06-07 The WCA has linked up with Maes y lade OEC to offer a series of open canoe development events based around Glasbury and the surrounding areas rivers and lakes. All the training workshops will be delivered by aspirant Level 5 Canoe Coaches (where relevant) and each weekend will have a Level 5 Open Canoe Coach in residence. In addition the ratios on the canoe courses will be kept very small so the coaching/development available will be of the highest standard. We have tried to keep the cost of each weekend to a minimum. Booking must be made well in advance to secure one of the few places on each workshop. Bookings can be made directly through Maes y Lade OEC (details at the bottom of the page). Priority will be given to WCA members or members of WCA affiliated clubs. 30th September-1st October 2006 - Coaching open canoe workshop - for the non specialist £45 This weekend is a two day workshop looking at developing the “tool box” of coaches who are keen to learn more about coaching any aspect of the open canoe. The lead coaches will be tailoring the weekend to suit the needs of those that attend. The ratios will be kept to a maximum of 1:4. Attendance on this weekend would also update/revalidate any coaching awards. 21st -22nd October 2006- 4* skills training £45 or 4* assessment Open Canoe Cost £80 A weekend to either tune the paddling skills of the aspirant 4* paddler or a chance to get assessed for the 4* award. A subsidy is available for candidates from WCA affiliated club attending the assessment. 21st -22nd October 2006- 4* skills training/assessment Kayak Cost £80 The course will consist of a days training in inland kayak and an assessment day on the second day for course members who request it. 25th -26th November 2006 - 4*+ leadership for the 4* paddler £45 This weekend aims to look at the leadership skills that will complement the 4* paddlers boating skills. The ratios will be kept to a maximum of 1:3 24th – 26th November 2006 - Level 3 Coach Open Canoe Training or Assessment £80 This course is for candidates who are interested in progressing through the coaching scheme and who already have the prerequisites for the relevant course – subsidy is available for coaches from WCA affiliated club for both the training and the assessment.

9th-10th December 2006 – 5* Open Canoe or Kayak training OR assessment cost £80 A weekend to either tune the paddling skills of the aspirant 5* paddler or a chance to get assessed for the 5* award. Canoe Days Out www.canoedaysout.com If your style of canoeing is suitable for families, not too strenuous and aims to enjoy a journey through the countryside with the emphasis on your companions and the surroundings, then this site is for you. This site is intended as a means of sharing experience of short canoe trips (rarely beyond ten or twelve miles) so that those with this common interest can conveniently extend our range, and visit new waterways without the need to research and plan the trips from scratch. Each trip provides details of how to get there, where to park and launch and brief details of the character of the trip with links to particular points of interest. There are photographs but the majority of these are held in separate albums attached to each "trip page" so as not to slow down access to the more general information if that is all you want. Trips are indexed by waterway and by county to make it easy to find something of interest to you. Above all the site provides the opportunity to share information and therefore invites your input. Do you have a favourite trip you would like to share with others? The "Share Your Days Out" button will take you to an input page which will guide you through the creation of a trip page and load it to the site. Grant Support for Overseas Expeditions If you are planning an expedition then it may well be worth applying for some financial support from the Sports Council for Wales, who have has a grant scheme known as the Overseas Expeditions Development Support Grant. The scheme helps fund overseas expeditions which will enhance the development of sport. What is eligible? - Groundbreaking Welsh Expeditions that have the support or endorsement of the National Governing Body (WCA) are eligible for support. Expeditions that are exclusively of an educational or scientific nature are not eligible. The groundbreaking nature of the expedition has to be in relation to the sport and not the individual or team. (i.e. the terms of grant are that the expedition enhances the sport: for example a first circumnavigation or a first descent, as opposed to a first descent for the individual or team.) Who is eligible to apply? - The majority of expedition members need to qualify as Welsh by birth, parentage, or as Welsh residents for a period of time. Source of Funding - The grant is provided by the Sports Council for Wales and applications deemed worthy of support will be considered by the Outdoor Pursuits group. The grant is limited to a contribution of up to 50% of the estimated costs of travel, safety equipment and other essential materials. Personal items of equipment are not eligible, and accommodation and insurance costs will be the responsibility of the applicants. The level of grant rarely exceeds £1,000. A link to further on line information and guidelines is provided below. How to Apply A link to the online application for is provided at the base of this information. Application forms need to be lodged with the Sports Council for Wales by 31st December prior to the financial year (1 April – 31st March) in which the expedition is planned to take place. There is no scope for retrospective applications. Prior to submitting your form you will need to discuss the expedition with WCA as the relevant NGB, as it is a requirement of the application process that the relevant NGB supports and endorses your application. On receipt of your application the SCW will consider if the application is suitable to be considered by the panel who apportion and award the grant on their behalf. The panel is made up of members of the Welsh Sports Association’s Outdoor Pursuits Group. The Grant Panel usually meet in March to apportion the available grant budget for the year to the expeditions that are suitable for funding. If your expedition is deemed worthy of consideration then you will be invited to give a presentation to the Grant Panel to outline the nature and aims of your expedition and to provide a synopsis of how your expedition will further the sport and why your venture is groundbreaking in nature.
