Shufeldton the Osteologyof the Tubinares.•-- Followinga reviewof the literatureof the generalsubject, are a few pageson the osteologyof Pu/- finusborealis, with a half-tonefigure of the skeleton,and a shortdiscus- sion of the taxonomyand affinitiesof the Tubinares. The classification that seems to the author to be "natural" is the same as that given in Sharpe's'Hand-List of Birds.'--J. A. A.

ALFREDNEWTON, an HonoraryFellow of the AmericanOrnithologists • Union, died at ,, June 8, 1907, at the age of 78 years. Prof. Newton was born in ,June 11, 1829, of Englishparents, he beingthe fifth sonof William Newton,formerly member of Parliament for Ipswich,and of Elizabeth (Milnes),daughter of Richard Slater Milnes, formerly memberof Parliament for York. He was graduatedB. A., in 1853,at MagdalenCollege, Cambridge, and later, as a travelingFellow of the College(1854-1863), visited Lapland, , the , and , and in 1864 he visited Spitzbergen. He was elected professorof ZoSlogyand ComparativeAnatomy at MagdalenCollege in 1864, which positionhe held at the tinheof his death. ProfessorNewton wasone of the twenty originalmembers of the British Ornithologists'Union, founded in November, 1858 at Magdalen College, 'Ca•nbridge, which organization resulted in the establishment of a Quarterly Magazineof ,'The ,' the first volumeof which was publishedin 1859, under the editorshipof Dr. P. L. Sclater. The secondseries of 'The Ibis' (1865-1870) was edited by Newton; he also prepared the bibliographicalmatter for the 'Aves' of the 'Zo61ogical Record'for the years1864-1869, and waseditor of the ' Zo61ogicalRecord/ 1870-1872. His principal publications are 'The ZoSlogy of Ancient Europe' (1862), the' Ornithologyof Iceland' (1863), ' 06theca Wolleyana' (1864-1907), 'Zo61ogy' (1874, 1894), 'Yarrell's British Birds' (4thed.,
