Lauridsen5 Abstract Background: Modern cold-water coral and tropical coral environments harbor a highly diverse and ecologically important macrofauna of crustaceans that face elevated extinction risks due to reef decline. The effect of environmental conditions acting on decapod crustaceans comparing these two habitats is poorly understood today and in deep time. Here, we compare the biodiversity, eye socket height as a proxy for eye size, and body size of decapods in fossil cold-water and tropical reefs that formed prior to human disturbance. Results: We show that decapod biodiversity is higher in fossiltropicalreefsfromTheNetherlands,Italy,and Spain compared to that of the exceptionally well-preserved Paleocene (Danian) cold-water reef/mound ecosystem from Faxe (Denmark), where decapod diversity is highest in a more heterogeneous, mixed bryozoan-coral habitat instead of in coral and bryozoan-dominated facies. The relatively low diversity at Faxe was not influenced substantially by the preceding Cretaceous/Paleogene extinction event that is not apparent in the standing diversity of decapods in our analyses, or by sampling, preservation, and/or a latitudinal diversity gradient. Instead, the lower availability of food and fewer hiding places for decapods may explain this low diversity. Furthermore, decapods from Faxe are larger than those from tropical waters for half of the comparisons, which may be caused by a lower number of predators, the delayed maturity, and the increased life span of crustaceans in deeper, colder waters.

The site documents a fauna of Early Jurassic nektonic marine animals (five species of fishes, one species of marine crocodilian, two species of ichthyosaurs, cephalopods and crustaceans), but also over 20 spe- cies of insects. Unlike other fossil sites of similar age, the 3D preservation at Strawberry Bank provides unique evidence on palatal and braincase structures in the fishes and reptiles. The age of the site is important, documenting a marine ecosystem during recovery from the end-Triassic mass extinction, but also exactly coincident with the height of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, a further time of turmoil in evolution.

Lamsdell, Giorgio Teruzzi, Giovanni Pasini, and Alessandro Garassino With 2 figures Abstract: Fossiliferous beds within the Lower Jurassic (Sinemurian) Moltrasio Limestone at Osteno, Italy, preserve a marine fauna including crustaceans, ophiuroids, ammonites, vermiform invertebrates, chondrichthyans, and actinopterygians in Lagerstätte conditions. Excavations during the 1980s and 1990s have greatly expanded the known faunal diversity. Herein, we describe the first horseshoe crab from Osteno, representing the oldest Jurassic limulid and only the second xiphosuran known from Italy. The new taxon, Ostenolimulus latus n. gen., n. sp., preserves details of the external morpholo- gy along with phosphatized traces of internal muscles and book gills. A number of characteristics, most prominently the possession of a cardiac ridge with rounded cross section, indicate Ostenolim- ulus n. gen. is a limulid resolving outside of the crown group and belongs to a clade including other Jurassic and Cretaceous taxa, such as Mesolimulus, Allolimulus, Victalimulus, and Casterolimulus. The discovery of Ostenolimulus n. gen. indicates that stem limulids were a diverse and widespread clade during the Jurassic, a time when crown group limulids were beginning to diversify and radiate. Milano, 135/1994 (II): 333-373, Giugno 1996 Alessandro Garassino (*) The family Erymidae Van Straelen, 1924 and the superfamily Glypheoidea Zittel, 1885 in the Sinemurian of Osteno in Lombardy (Crustacea, Decapoda) Abstract - The aim of this work, which concludes the studies about macruran decapod crustaceans of the Sinemurian deposit of Osteno, is to analyze the family Erymidae Van Strae- len, 1924 and the superfamily Glypheoidea Zittel, 1885. The two species Eryma meyeri n.sp. and Phlyctisoma sinemuriana n.sp. have been attributed to the family Erymidae Van Straelen, 1924 (infraorder Astacidea Latreille, 1803). The genus Phlyctisoma Bell, 1863 is reported for the first time in Lower Jurassic. The two species Glyphea tricarinata n.sp. and Mecochirus ger- mari n.sp. have been attributed to the superfamily Glypheoidea Zittel, 1885 (infraorder Pali- nura Latreille, 1803). Pseudoglyphea ancylochelis (Woodward, 1863) belongs to the same su- perfamily. M. germari n.sp. is presently the est preserved species of Lower Jurassic deposits. The systematic position of the genus Pseudoglyphea Oppel, 1861 is discussed. Riassunto - La famiglia Erymidae Van Straelen, 1924 e la superfamiglia Glypheoidea Zittel, 1885 nel Sinemuriano di Osteno in Lombardia (Crustacea, Decapoda). In questo lavoro, che conclude gli studi sui crostacei decapodi macruri del giacimento si- nemuriano di Osteno, vengono analizzate la famiglia Erymidae Van Straelen, 1924 e la super- famiglia Glypheoidea Zittel, 1885. NeH'ambito della famiglia Erymidae Van Straelen, 1924 (infraordine Astacidea Latreille, 1803) sono state istituite le due specie Eryma meyeri n.sp. e Phlyctisoma sinemuriana n.sp.. II genere Phlyctisoma Bell, 1863 viene segnalato per la prima volta nel Giurassico inferiore.
