BACKGROUND Female Rugby is the fastest growing female sport in the world, but in it is still not classified as a professional sport. This means that female rugby players, that mostly comes out of the townships in South Africa out of poverty and gender-based inequality and even gender-based violence scattered areas, never can excel in the game of rugby. Let us be honest: Male rugby players can sign enormously high contract with the universities, clubs, provinces, unions, and international clubs, whereas females do play the game at provincial and national level but must go back to the township after these games took place. There is no place for them to exercise and train, and most of them do not even have a meal for the day. Female Rugby has been on the back burner for to long. In South Africa, through the South African Rugby Legends Association, Atlas Foundation, the Department of Education, the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and other SARU projects, that caters for thousands of girls and created an opportunity for the girls to participate in ward games, regional games, provincial games, and national games. Because of no formal structure for female rugby at tertiary educational facilities, we now realized that we need to create an opportunity for girls that are leaving school to be part of a high-performance structure, but also have an opportunity to study and further their career in sports administration / informational technology / education and even artisans, Funny enough, female rugby does not get played by traditional rugby playing schools. Most female rugby players come from the townships and rural areas; this means that they cannot afford to go further their studies after school anyway. Which in turns means they stay unemployed and are exposed to poverty, gender-based inequality, gender-base violence and will never get the opportunity to getaway from these terrible situations. With the established Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute, we will now source funding from the private sector, government, and other organizations. Because we are registered with the Department of Social Development as a non-profit organization your organization will have the real advantage of BB-BEE, Skills Levy, and a Section 18a tax clearance certificate.

ABOUT US Female rugby should be fun to play, affordable, and an opportunity to teach life skills. At the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute, we provide quality coaching in rugby specific skills, strength, and conditioning. Our coaching staff is a team. We work together and attend World Rugby accredited coaching trainings to provide all players with high-level training. We do not exclude any player based on their socio-economics position as we are a non-profit organization that creates partnerships with local- and provincial government and with the private sector so that not any of the students have any financial obligation towards this program. We value these partnerships. Through these partnerships we can offer a variety of programs and study fields to all our female players. Rugby is in our DNA. We love the sport and want to pass that love on to the young female generation in South Africa. At the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute, our coaches will push you to be a better player while having a blast as a tea creating life-long memories and friends. Developing character and going beyond sport. Through por core value program, we will take time to focus on the life lesson taught through sport. At GWRI we offer a safe environment for the girls to live in a hostel and provide them with 3 meals a day. Through our partnership with several educational providers, we help creating a career pathway for our players as there are life after rugby. We will work on an individual long-term player development model for each individual female player, but also look at options of following a career in rugby through coaching, referee, and administration programs. Developing player to a maximum potential while conveying life values and building a healthy lifestyle.

OUR MISSION AND VISSION “Be a good citizen, a good student and the best rugby player you could be”. The Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute prides itself on providing a professional and holistically planned program for young athletic development. This is achieved through exposing our students to world-class on and off-field high-performance training. Our highly experienced coaching staff are passionate about developing women to become the best rugby player they can be, all within a disciplined high- performance environment. The on-field training sessions are held at the training grounds next to the hostel in Springs, Gauteng. A High-performance strength and conditioning program are developed to compliment the way in which GWRI coaches want the women to play rugby. The strength and conditioning program implemented is also positioned specifically and relevant to each position. Further educational courses, Academic qualifications and skills transfer initiatives are designed to achieve “Whole Person Development” and it forms part of the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institutes high- performance program. It is vital that we prepare our students for life IN and AFTER rugby; we do this by providing a pathway towards employability. Thus, making sure that these females never again must be dependent on a male to provide for them and will be able to escape the biggest reason for gender- based violence in South Africa. Our range of separate courses and workshops in partnership with government, civil society, churches, and the private sector are focused on skills needed for these students to stand on their own two feet. Our life skills coach program also plays an integral part in the development of these skills needed. On our specialist sports campus, the students will benefit from the highest quality teaching, coaching and facilities as become part of our success story. Women’s rugby is growing rapidly around the world, and South Africa is gaining momentum. The reality is that the areas within the country that holds the biggest pool of the women’s rugby talent is within the rural and lower-economic areas. These women com from difficult circumstances. And therefore, have not been afforded the sporting opportunities that many other in the country have had access to. The time is NOW to provide an opportunity for those who most need and deserve it. An opportunity that will transform the female sporting landscape of the country – the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute. The first of its kind in South Africa; a women-specific high-performance rugby institute that are only producing sport excellence, but also focusses on the holistic development of our women, through an on-site NATIONAL academic qualification, life- and mental skills. “Rugby does not belong to anybody; it belongs to everybody.” In South-Africa there is an urgent need to accelerate the empowerment of girls and women in sport. Unfortunately, gender inequality is still a reality within all sports in South Africa. The gender gap within rugby, between men and women, is one of the greatest. The Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute with the correct partnerships are assisting in providing a significant and national pathway for women’s rugby in South Africa, specifically catering for the gap from 18 – 24. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE NOW!!!!
