Wind from the S at 10-20 mph. Summary: Miguel Angel Jimenez defeated Bernhard Langer and Olin Browne on the first playoff hole to secure his seventh career victory Sunday at the Chubb Classic. He posted the day’s only bogey-free round, a 5-under 66, and played the last 47 holes of the tournament bogey free. Jimenez and Browne were the clubhouse leaders at 13-under after Browne double bogeyed the closing hole. It was the first time Jimenez had a share of the lead on Sunday. In the playoff, Jimenez’s two-putt par from 30 feet secured the victory after Bernhard Langer and Browne failed to get up-and-down for par on the par-4 18th, which was the second-hardest hole Sunday (4.325). Jimenez improved his playoff record to 2-2. The win is Jimenez’s seventh on PGA TOUR Champions, and this is the sixth straight year he has won. Last year, he won his first two senior majors, the Regions Tradition and The Senior Open Championship. In the last three years, he has finished 5th (2018) and 6th (2017, 2016) in the Charles Schwab Cup. In his other two starts at the Chubb Classic, he was runner-up in 2017 and ninth in 2018. Chubb Classic | February 15-17, 2019 Olin Browne, 68-66-66 – 200 (-13) With a birdie on No. 17, Browne was the first and only player to reach 15-under. On the last hole of regulation, he missed the green with his approach and hit his third shot into the front-right greenside bunker. When he failed to get up-and-down for bogey, he posted 13-under and shared the clubhouse lead with Jimenez. In the playoff, Browne hit his approach into the front-left greenside bunker. He missed his chip for par and moved to 0-2 in playoffs on PGA TOUR Champions. The T2 finish is his best since he was runner-up at the 2016 Regions Tradition. In all, it was his fourth runner-up and 47th top-10 in 222 starts on Tour. Browne led the field in putting (1.538 putts per GIR) and one-putt percentage (57.41%). In 2018, he had two top-10s (Best: T5, Cologuard Classic) and finished 53rd in the Charles Schwab Cup. Bernhard Langer, 68-64-68 – 200 (-13) On the par-5 17th, Langer was part of the three-way tie at 13-under. He missed a six-foot birdie putt on No. 17 that would have given him a one-shot advantage, and the par-par finish setup the three-man playoff. In the playoff, he missed the green with his approach, and he missed his eight-foot par putt on the low side. His playoff record fell to 6-7, and his 13 playoff appearances are most all-time on PGA TOUR Champions. Langer made just two bogeys all week – on No. 7 in the final round and in the playoff. The T2 finish was his ninth top-10 in 11 starts at the Chubb Classic. Langer finished the week T65 in one-putt percentage (35.19%) and 44th in putting average (1.732 putts per GIR). Stephen Ames, 63-68-71 – 202 (-11) Ames was one of three second-round co-leaders, and he took the day’s first two-shot lead when he chipped-in for eagle on No. 3. He parred the next seven holes and led by one through 10 holes. On the par-5 11th, he hit his tee shot out of bounds, leading to a double bogey. It was his first bogey of the week and it dropped him two shots behind Browne. He regained a share of the lead with a birdie on No. 13, but bogeys on Nos. 14 and 18 dropped him to 11-under and a tie for sixth. Ames played in Sunday’s final group for the fourth time in his last six starts. He played in Sunday’s final pairing at all three Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs events in 2018. He posted finishes of T15-T3-T5 and was 21st in the final Charles Schwab Cup standings. Other Notes Sunday’s final round (71.156) played nearly two shots harder than Saturday (69.182). In all, nine players had at least a share of the lead on Sunday: Glen Day, Ken Tanigawa, Stephen Ames, Marco Dawson, Kevin Sutherland, Woody Austin, Bernhard Langer, Olin Browne and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Ken Tanigawa and Glen Day were the other two 36-hole co-leaders. They both shot 72 Sunday and finished T11 at 10-under. Hale Irwin, 73, closed with a 2-over 73 and finished 58.     2017 U.S. SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES • The 38th United States Senior Open Championship will be played at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Massachusetts from June 26-July 2, 2017. The course will be set up at 6,815 yards and will play to a par- 70 (35-35). Salem Country Club was designed by Donald Ross. The club opened in 1925 and from its humble initiatives evolved one of America’s great courses, deemed one of architect Ross’ finest creations, and anchored by a classic colonial clubhouse. • Salem Country Club will be hosting the prestigious U.S. Senior Open for the second time. It also served as host in 2001 when Bruce Fleisher prevailed by one stroke over Gil Morgan and Isao Aoki. In addition to the U.S. Senior Open, the club also hosted the 1932 U.S. Women’s Amateur (Virginia Van Wie), the 1954 U.S. Women’s Open (Babe Didrickson Zaharias), the 1977 U.S. Senior Amateur (Dale Morey), and the 1984 U.S. Women’s Open (Hollis Stacy). • PGA TOUR Champions is certainly no stranger to the Boston area. Trenham 2010 to 2016 2010 In November Leo DeGisi was sworn in for a second three-year term as a PGA of America director. 2011 The Section celebrated its 90 th birthday and Rich Steinmetz won the Section Championship for a third time. 2012 Stu Ingraham won the Section Championship, Sr. Championship, Player-of-the-Year, points and scoring average. 2013 Harry Hammond won the PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award, Mark Sheftic was on the PGA Cup Team for a 3rd time. 2014 Lou Guzzi-teaching, Rick Kline-merchandising and Scott Nye-merchandising were honored with national awards. 2015 The Philadelphia Cricket Club hosted the PGA Professional National Championship. 2016 In November Tom Carpus was elevated to chairman of the PGA of America rules committee. 2010 A new decade began with the country in a deep recession and the business of golf was in just as deep. There were more golf courses than there were golfers. Definitely, there were too many golf professionals. Some golf courses were closing which was the best for the business in general but difficult for the employees. One golf writer stated that for the first time more golfers were on waiting lists to get out of clubs in the United States that there were waiting to get into clubs. In January the PGA made some changes to the apprentice program. One of those was that all applicants to the apprentice program would have to complete three online courses and pass a knowledge course before being al- lowed to register in the program.

Late in the round, it appeared as if Durant would be the sole leader, but he hit his second shot in the water on the par-4 17th and made double-bogey that temporarily left the tournament with a six-way tie for the lead. Langer, who has not won in 2015, has only had one full season where he’s not won within the first eight events (2012). “This tournament is very special for many reasons. It was my first victory on the Champions Tour and then last year was my 20th victory on the Champions Tour,” said Langer. “I won three times on two golf courses at this event. It is very uniuqe that I have a chance to go four times which is awesome. I like everything about the tournament. It is well run, a great course, and a great sponsor.” Langer held off a charging Fred Couples by a stroke to win his third Insperity Invitational one year ago. Couples had an up-and-down front nine, but birdied the 10h hole to get withink six strokes of Langer. Couples then proceeded to birdie four straight holes (12 through 15) and pulled within a storke when Langer failed to get up and down from the greenside bunker at the par-3 16th hole. After Couples missed a five-foot par putt on 18, Langer played the final hole with a two-stroke cushion. Langer bogeyed the final hole, but still held on for a one-shot victory.
