Holy Convocation is the feast, the festival. Three times a year

Deuteronomy 16:16 Three times a year all your men must appear before the Lord your at the place he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, The Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Exodus 23:1-16.Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me….celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field. Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord. UP TO . Three times a year. Main Points to Take Away Today • Christ is Our Great High Priest. • Jesus left the glory and beauty of heaven to come to earth, to live in the world and to go to the Cross. • In this way, He opened up the Holy of Holies to us. • His sacrificial work made us, as believers, priests and royalty! • He stripped Himself of His glory to come to earth. • In the Old Testament, the high priest, discarded his garments of beauty and wore a simple linen garment to go into the Holy of Holies just once a year. • This is a picture of Christ’s humility. • When Jesus Christ went to the Cross, John tells us He wore a simple linen garment. As our High Priest, Jesus was stripped and beaten and soldiers gambled for His simple garment; the garment of a priest! • Now seated in heaven, Christ ever lives to intercede for us as our Great High Priest, and He invites us to function as priests and kings. Where Are We Going Today? Shekinah Glory Define Yom Kippur Order of Melchizedek The Ceremony The Three Areas of Atonement The Scripture In Leviticus and Exodus relevant to Yom Kippur The Scripture In Hebrews relevant to Yom Kippur Day of Atonement in Revelation Why YOM KIPPUR matters to you! SHEKINAH GLORY

Manifestation of God’s Presence JESUS OUR HIGH PRIEST Hebrews 10:1,11-12 ; 8:1-2

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming– not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in heaven, and who serves in the , the true set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being. So just what is YOM KIPPUR? And why is it important to us? Yom Kippur is the sixth of seven festivals the Lord commanded the children of to celebrate. This was the great day of national cleansing and repentance from sin. It was on this day that God judged the sins of the entire nation. In view of this, the Day of Atonement became known as the Day of Judgment. It was the one day in the year when the High Priest would go behind the into the Holy of Holies with the blood of the sacrifice and sprinkle it on the . The word “atonement” means to cover. On the great day of atonement, the sins of the nation were covered by the blood of the sacrifice. It was a time of great soul affliction. It was a day of godly sorrow, godly repentance, and confession of sins. It was a time of mourning before God with a broken spirit and contrite heart. It is the only required day of fasting in the Bible. ( Lev 23 and 36) THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

• Holy Convocation • A Day of Fasting • A Day of Soul Affliction • A Day of Solemn Assembly ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK Hebrews 7:23-28

But Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Unlike other high priests he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sin, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever. Entered Through the Veil. Hebrews 10. The atoning ministry falls into three categories:

1. Atonement for Aaron and His Household 2. Atonement for the Nation 3. Atonement for the Sanctuary Aaron Alone Makes the Atonement Leviticus 16:17. When Aaron the High Priest fulfilled the atoning work, he was to enter alone, and no one else was to be with him. He ministered alone in the supreme work of reconciliation. ( N. T.) So it pointed to the fact that Christ alone could reconcile man to God. Hebrews 9:7 Atonement for Aaron and His Household Leviticus 16:3-14. Aaron offered a bullock for himself and his house. After this, he presented two goats before the Lord, casting lots as to which goat was for the Lord and which goat would go into the wilderness. Aaron was to take the blood of a bullock for the and enter within the veil and sprinkle the blood eastward seven times before the Mercy Seat. All this was done amidst the rising cloud of incense from the golden . ( N.T.) Christ is our perfect righteous High Priest. Atonement for the Sanctuary

After making atonement for himself and his household and then the nation, Aaron then made atonement for the sanctuary and its furnishings. This day is called by the prophet Daniel ( Dan 8:13-14) - “The Cleansing of the Sanctuary.” First, the Holy Place was atoned for, then the Most Holy Place or the Holy Sanctuary was atoned for, and then the golden of incense was atoned for. After the golden altar of incense was atoned for, Aaron sprinkled the blood of atonement seven times on it, cleansing and hallowing it from Israel’s uncleanness. The horns of the altar were also cleansed. Atonement for the Nation Aaron then killed the goat for a Sin Offering. This was the offering for the people. He did with the blood of the goat what he did with the blood of the bullock. He entered within the veil into the Holiest of all and sprinkled the blood on the Mercy Seat of the . In this way the nation was atoned for. ( N.T.) As Aaron atoned for his priestly household and then the nation of Israel, so Christ made atonement for His household, the church, and all believers. Since the cross we, the church, constitute the ‘Israel of God’, the holy nation, the royal priesthood after the order of Melchizedek. Galatians 6:16. INTERIOR of the TABERNACLE/Mercy Seat Hebrews 9:11-14

But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. HE WAS TORN IN TWO TO MAKE US ONE “By A New And Living Way Opened Up For Us Through the Curtain, That Is, His Body.” • HEBREWS 10: 20. Come Up Here SET YOUR MIND ON THINGS ABOVE Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3. Exodus 34:2. Come up on . Present yourself to Me there on top of the mountain. You have come (up) to Mt Hebrews 12:22.

But you have come to Mt Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. Lion and the Lamb Colossians 3:1 Garments of Beauty Simple Linen Garments Linen Garments

Lev 16:4,23. On this day Aaron laid aside the ‘garments of glory and beauty’ (Ex 28:1-5) and put on linen garments. He was wholly clothed in white linen “holy garments” as he made the atonement. After making the atonement for the Sanctuary and washing in the Holy Place, he was then to change back in to his garments of glory and beauty. ( N.T.) Christ set aside His garments of glory and beauty and humbled Himself to be our Great High Priest. ( Phil 2) Leviticus 16: 2,4. The Lord said to Moses: Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover. He is to put on the linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body: he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on. Leviticus 16:32-34 The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community. “This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all sins of the .” And it was done, as the Lord commanded. Exodus 28, 29,31,35, 39

John 19: 23. When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece. A Holy Priesthood

I Peter 2:4-5. As you come to him, the living Stone- rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. The Washing of Water

Lev 16:4,24. On this day there was a special washing of water in preparation for the sacrificial offerings. Aaron washed before he entered the sanctuary and then washed again in the Holy Place after the Sanctuary had been cleansed. The Washing of Water The Ceremonies The Golden Censer Lev 16 :1-2 Aaron was to come only once a year into the Holy of Holies. He was to take the golden censer and with his hands full of sweet incense bring it within the veil. As he entered within the veil, placing incense on the fiery coals, a cloud of incense ascended covering the Ark of Glory. (N.T.) David said: “Let my prayer be set forth before Thee as incense.” (Psalm 141:2) The prayers of the saints also ascend within the veil, acceptable to God through Christ. Christ ever lives to intercede for us . Hebrews 7:25. Jesus is our Great High Priest

The Two Goats

The first goat was killed and its blood sprinkled within the veil on the Mercy Seat.

The second goat, the Scapegoat was led out into the wilderness. GOAT LED AWAY. DESOLATE. BROKEN. Leviticus 16:5-10, 15, 21,22. The Goats From the Israelite community he is to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household. Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. He is to cast lots for the two goats – one lot for the Lord and the other for the scapegoat. Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the Lord and sacrifice it for a sin offering. But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat. He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: he shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it. He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the rebellion and wickedness of the Israelites --- all their sins- and put them on the goat’s head . He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness. Hebrews 13:11 -14a Outside the Camp The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through His own blood. Let us, then, go to Him outside the camp bearing the disgrace He bore. For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. The Bodies Without the Camp After the scapegoat was sent out in the Wilderness by the hand of a fit man, Aaron entered into the Holy Place, washed himself and changed his garments. Then he took the fat of the sin offering, burnt it on the altar in the outer court, for the fat belonged exclusively to the Lord for His altar. (Leviticus 4:9-10, I 2:16) Blood Sprinkled

1. In Passover, the blood was sprinkled on the door. 2. In Pentecost, the blood was sprinkled on the people, the altar. 3. In the Day of Atonement ceremonies, the blood was sprinkled on the Mercy Seat. All of This Christ Did So You Can COME UP HERE The Seven Times Sprinkling of Blood
