New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene In 2012, nearly 86% of the population reported having a ‘personal doctor’ and over half the population underwent HIV testing Neighborhood Health Profiles 2015 Coney Island Neighborhood Profiles 2015 : Williamsburg - Bushwick 11206, 11221, 11237 Technical Notes Data Sources: The data presented in these Brooklyn Neighborhood Health Profiles (BNHP) is public use data, made available from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as well as U.S. Census Bureau via the American Community Survey (ACS) estimates. The Community Health Survey (CHS) is a telephone survey conducted annually by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene since 2002. It is a cross-sectional survey providing self-reported data from an annual sample of approximately 8,500 randomly selected adults aged 18 years and older from New York City. For the purpose of these profiles, data for indicators related to vital statistics, health out- comes, health services, health behaviors, built environment, education and insurance were obtained from CHS. The U.S. Census Bureau’s ACS is an ongoing survey that provides data every year related to age, sex, race, family and relationships, income, health insurance, education, veteran status, disabilities, commute and housing. Most of the socioeconomic and demographic data is obtained with zip codes as statistical areas from the ACS. Geographic area definitions: For the purpose of Phase 1 of BNHP, we have used United Hospital Fund definitions (UHF) to define the eleven neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn. The CHS uses stratified random sampling according to UHF neighborhood descriptions to collect data. We have also used the zip code statistical areas to retrieve data from ACS. These two different geographic areas are combined to present data in UHF neighborhood defini- tions with the aid of an equivalency table. Domains and Indicators: A total of thirty-eight indicators are included in BNHP and categorized within eight domains, each describ- ing the social environment of an individual (Table 1). To develop the Health Needs Index using the social indicators approach and for ranking the neighborhoods based on unmet needs, we shortlisted fourteen indicators across seven domains using a correlation matrix to eliminate skewing from highly correlated indicators (Table 2). Data for indicators obtained from CHS is age-adjusted.

    The $100 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) will invest $10 million in one community in each region ripe for development to transform them into vibrant communities where tomorrow’s workforce will want to live, work and raise families. The program emphasizes using investments to reinforce and secure additional public and private investments proximal to, and within, downtown neighborhoods, and in doing so will build upon growth spurred by the REDCs. Each REDC will nominate one downtown in their region best positioned to take advantage of the DRI. The NYC Regional Economic Development Council (NYC REDC) is currently soliciting interest in the program from communities in the region using the enclosed template. Fixing the BQE is exceptionally complicated due to its unusual design and the constrained site in which it operates. This corridor is sandwiched between Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Promenade and Brooklyn Heights, the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, bustling DUMBO and Vinegar Hill, and an extraordinary volume of infrastructure below – four subway lines, an eight-foot DEP interceptor sewer, and many other utility lines. Creating sufficient space to stage the construction (e.g. to fit equipment like cranes and store materials) is a key challenge that any concept must address. Specifically, any construction concept needs to account for the complexities of working with a cantilever structure, building on or around Furman Street, the surrounding open spaces, and other infrastructure running above and below the BQE. This part of the BQE corridor is also comprised of multiple structures that require different methods of rehabilitation or replacement. Although the triple cantilever is the most well-known portion of this project, the double cantilever and the bridges at Joralemon, Old Fulton, and Columbia Heights all require repair. Cantilever Considerations A traditional bridge structure is usually rehabilitated lane-by-lane. Construction crews shut down a portion of the bridge, repair those areas, and then shift traffic to the rehabilitated section. This type of construction staging is not possible on the triple cantilever due to the unique nature of the BQE.
