UPPER ISLAND MUSICAL FESTIVAL PREAMBLE

AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION

The Upper Island Musical Festival is a volunteer-run, non-profit society whose purpose is to advance, promote and develop the Musical Competition Festival movement and to encourage the study and practice of music, dancing, and speech & dramatic arts. For more than 90 years, we have been organizing an annual festival to carry out these aims in Nanaimo and for the surrounding area. We quote from the Digest Report of the Federation of Canadian Musical Festivals: “Competition is essential in the conduct of a Festival. No non-competitive means can raise the same standard of performance to the same degree or create the same interest in striving to attain the highest levels of performance and appreciation. Competition is a means to an end and is not to be stressed to the exclusion of the Festival spirit. It is a means of pacing one another on the road to excellence and is to arise above rivalry.” The Festival spirit may be defined as the joy of participating with others in seeking the highest levels in the art of music and kindred arts. Inculcating this spirit in competitors, the audience, and the community is a priority for all those responsible for the operation of the Festivals.

The UIMF gives a sincere welcome and thank-you to all those participating in this year’s festival:  our sponsors and patrons whose generosity makes our festival possible;  the performers who have practiced so diligently for the occasion;  the teachers who have worked so hard to prepare their students;  the adjudicators who have taken time out of busy schedules to offer their friendly critiques, give encouragement and share their knowledge;  an appreciative audience that ensures a successful festival by providing incentive to the performers. A festival is a celebration, a gathering for entertainment, and a competition. May the Upper Island Musical Festival be all of these permeated with the spirit of friendship. May all the competitors rise to the occasion and perform to the very best of their abilities.

As the audience for these festival performances, you are one of the most important participants. Every artist responds to an appreciative audience. Please observe the following rules: SILENCE IS ESSENTIAL during performances and adjudications, so please: - Enter or leave only between classes; - Refrain from talking during performances or adjudications; - Control small children within the performance venue and adjacent areas; - Do not applaud BEFORE performances, - Recognize ALL contestants with applause on completion of their performances. PLEASE CONSIDER: Individuals who are scheduled late in a session may be discouraged if the majority of the audience has left. If possible, please stay until the end of the session. YOUR ATTENDANCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED - THANK YOU!

President’s Message

Celebrating 91 Years of Promoting Excellence in Music Dance and Dramatic Arts

To friends and supporters of the Upper Island Musical Festival,

I am so pleased to address you in our 91st year. Who would have imagined that since 1928 we would have come so far? We have overcome so many obstacles along the way and will continue our mandate to promote excellence in the performing arts, being blessed with the support of an enthusiastic artistic community.

We are looking forward to our last season under the umbrella of the Upper Island Musical Festival. Upon completion of the 2019 Festival, we will forge ahead under our new name of the Mid Island Performing Arts Festival (MIPAF). Our new name is more inclusive of our Festival boundaries from Port Alberni to Parksville and from Bowser to Ladysmith, and avoids the confusion between ourselves as Upper Island and Courtenay as North Island.

Since we are a non-profit organization, to keep our expenses reasonable, we have had to make the very difficult decision to suspend our Dance Gala for this season.

When we began the Dance Gala more than 30 years ago, its purpose was to support bursaries for Dance students, as there were few bursaries donated to Dance by our patrons. Due to the significantly lower number of registrations in our group sections this year, we are unable to present the Dance Gala at the Port Theatre. We are doing our best to maintain the level of bursary funding that we have had in the past and believe that moving forward with Dance Gala at the Port Theatre for this season could potentially limit the number and amount of Dance bursaries available in the future. We anticipate many positive changes for next season and are considering a whole new format for the Dance Gala that remains consistent with our mission.

In spite of this small setback, we are looking forward to a spectacular 2019 Festival season and beyond. Attend our Honours Performance on April 28th at 2 PM at St. Andrew’s United Church and see some of the best young performers in the Nanaimo and mid-island area as chosen by our adjudicators. These performers will then have the opportunity to participate at the provincial Performing Arts BC (PABC) festival in Chilliwack, May 26th to 30th.

As friends and supporters of your Festival, we always appreciate your input. Please contact us through our Festival website nanaimomusicfestival.com or mipaf.ca.

Sincerely

Andrea Bertram President, UIMF

Complaints or protests should be made in writing to the Festival Secretary, (NOT the Adjudicator), accompanied by a protest fee of $25.00. IMPORTANT EFFECT OF BILL C-42 – COPYRIGHT ACT It is illegal to copy by any means previously published material. Publishers usually hold the copyright, and in the case of firms no longer in business, their copyrights are assets transferred to others. A letter is required from any publisher who has given permission for the copying of their work. Internet copies are acceptable only with a valid receipt. The Federation of Canadian Music Festivals has now deemed it permissible to use photocopies for page turns etc. as long as the original copy is present at the performance. This does not mean that the adjudicator has the original and the performer the photocopy; there must be two published copies present in the competition venue. Heavy penalties are enacted in this legislation and have been levied upon other arts organizations. This Association cannot afford to be compromised. PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR AN EXEMPTION. ANY PARTICIPANT WHO DOES NOT STAY WITHIN THE ABOVE COPYRIGHT RULES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED

THE REWARD IS WITHIN The contest lasts for moments though the training’s taken years, It wasn’t the winning alone that was worth the work and the tears. The applause will be forgotten; the prize will be misplaced, but the long hard hours of practice will never be a waste. For in trying to win, you build a skill; you learn that winning depends on will. You never grow by how much you win -- you only grow by how much you put in. So, any new challenge you’ve just begun, put forth your best and you’ve already won. W.A. (Bill) Clennan – “Canadian Dean of Public Speakers”

Though she has performed as a freelance musician throughout her career with such groups as the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and in various chamber ensembles, her passionate focus has been string teaching and developing the String Orchestras she has founded and nurtured over the last twenty- seven years. Her ensemble, the Semiahmoo Strings, based in White Rock, is a group of advanced violin and cello students who perform up to three full programs each year. Such performances have featured Alexander Dobson (the great Canadian baritone), the Miles Black jazz trio, tenor Lance Ryan and many other guest soloists. The group recently performed Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with a professional wind and brass section. Her beginning string ensemble, the Demi- Semiahmoo Strings, attracts beginning string players eager to become a part of her programs. Carla also conducts the Surrey Intermediate Strings Orchestra.

An Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is in demand as an adjudicator at festivals and competitions locally and provincially. Carla holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia, where she studied with Gerald Stanick, and an A.R.C.T. in piano performance, and enjoys accompanying her students.

Hannah Henney

Hannah Henney first entered the dance scene in a Port Coquitlam studio called Chiasson at the age of three. She trained in tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre and ballet until graduating at age seventeen. She then furthered her training with the Scholarship dance program at Drive Dance Centre, the Source Dance Company and Souldiers Dance Company.

During her training, Hannah fell in love with hip hop and began training in many of the original street styles like locking, house, popping and waacking. After spending the past few summers in training, performing and battling, she has gained a deeper understanding of hip hop culture and history.

Hannah’s screen dance credits include Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Syfy’s The Magicians, Nat Geo’s Valley of the Boom, and Disney’s Freaky Friday. She’s also performed as an opening act for artists Mya, Meek Mill, Fabolous, B.O.B., Pusha T and Raekwon. She is a member of the powerhouse female crew Diamonds in the Rough and travels as a crew member throughout the U.S and Canada performing, teaching and battling.

Hannah is a very sought after and engaging teacher and choreographer of hip hop, tap and jazz. She has also adjudicated many dance competitions throughout the Lower Mainland where she loves connecting with the youth and sharing her knowledge and experience with the upcoming generation. Her fire, passion and positivity always shine through whether she is working on set, performing on stage, choreographing a show, or in a studio with her students.

Most recently, Hannah has also found a deep passion for acting and has trained with renowned instructors Chad Rook, Jeb Beach and Shea Hampton in Vancouver. She made her acting debut in a Telus Storyhive web series called Auditions, and then as the lead role in a short film with director Heather Perluzzo, currently showing in the festival circuit.

AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION

The Upper Island Musical Festival is a volunteer-run, non-profit society whose purpose is to advance, promote and develop the Musical Competition Festival movement and to encourage the study and practice of music, dancing, and speech & dramatic arts. For 90 years, we have been organizing an annual festival to carry out these aims in Nanaimo and for the surrounding area. Inculcating this spirit in competitors, audience and the community is a priority for all those responsible for the operation of the Festivals.

The UIMF offers a sincere thank-you to all those participating in this year’s festival:

 our sponsors and patrons whose generosity makes our festival possible;  the performers who have practiced so diligently for the occasion;  the teachers who have worked so hard to prepare their students;  the adjudicators who have taken time out of busy schedules to offer their friendly critiques, give encouragement and share their knowledge;  an appreciative audience that ensures a successful festival by providing incentive to the performers. A festival is a celebration, a gathering for entertainment, a competition. May the Upper Island Musical Festival be all of these permeated with the spirit of friendship. May all the competitors rise to the occasion and perform to the very best of their abilities.
