I could see the muzzles of the professional's double rifle coming up, and said "I've got him" and fired the third shot. As I recovered from the recoil and aimed again, the Cape Buffalo was falling head over heels into the long grass. This was the trip of a lifetime, and I had just shot my first Cape Buffalo with my English Double Rifle,' a Hellis 450/400-31/4" nitro express. The English Double Rifle is one of the guns that when you see one, conjures up images of Africa and dan- gerous game. There is a romance associated with the Double Rifle of the "Great White Hunter" saving his client's life with a well-placed shot at a matter of feet. their trips and experiences. It is from these accounts that The English Double Rifle has spanned the last one we see the need of the hunter for fast, reliable firearms hundred and fifty years and has evolved from the percus- capable of stopping big and dangerous game animals.

E - Gazette Mk II New Zealand Antique & Historical Arms Association Inc. # 21 September 2012 EDITORIAL Again my thanks to those who have sent comments and contributions, I hope to see you at the Half Year General Meeting on 22nd September. If you have comments to make or news or articles to contribute, send them to [email protected] All views (and errors) expressed here are those of the Editor and not necessarily those of the NZAHAA Inc. Phil Cregeen, Editor [email protected] AN INTERESTING BAYONET by Phil Cregeen © 2012 I must confess I bought the top bayonet in the above picture on Trade Me on impulse, because it intrigued me. Was it 1.a genuine officially modified Pattern ’07 or 2. one cut down by a collector to emulate a trials bayonet such as the Australian Shortened and Lightened No 1 (see BCB A12) or Owen bayonet (see BCB A 13), or 3. had a pig hunter cut it down for a pig sticker? As you can see it is very similar to an Australian Owen gun bayonet (lower) and it came in an Owen bayonet scabbard marked MANGROVITE ’44. However the bayonet itself is manufactured by MOLE and dated 3/18. Like the Owen Mk I Bayonet introduced in 1944 it has a10 inch blade, however the fuller carries through the point and this has only been curved on the lower side unlike the Owen which has a slight curve on the top of the point. Note too that India shortened many Pat ’07 bayonets including British & Australian ones although these normally had 12 inch blades.

  • Martini-Henry Mark I 1873
Martini-Henry Mark I 1873 The Martini–Henry is a breech-loading single-shot lever-actuated rifle that was used by the British Army. It first entered service in 1871, eventually replacing the Snider–Enfield, a muzzle-loader converted to the cartridge system. Martini–Henry variants were used throughout the British Empire for 47 years. It combined the dropping-block action first developed by Henry O. Peabody (in his Peabody rifle) and improved by the Swiss designer Friedrich von Martini, combined with the polygonal rifling designed by Scotsman Alexander Henry. There were four main marks of the Martini–Henry rifle produced: Mark I (released in June 1871), Mark II, Mark III, and Mark IV. There was also an 1877 carbine version with variations that included a Garrison Artillery Carbine, an Artillery Carbine (Mark I, Mark II, and Mark III), and smaller versions designed as training rifles for military cadets. The Mark IV Martini–Henry rifle ended production in 1889, replaced by the Lee–Metford, but it remained in service throughout the British Empire until the end of the First World War. In the original chambering, the rifles fired a round-nosed, tapered-head .452-inch, soft hollow- based lead bullet, wrapped in a paper patch giving a wider diameter of .460 to .469-inch; it weighed 485 grains. It was crimped in place with two cannelures (grooves on the outside neck of the case), ahead of two fiber card or mill board disks, a concave beeswax wad, another card disk and cotton wool filler. This sat on top of the main powder charge inside initially a rimmed brass foil cartridge, later made in drawn brass.
