Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multi religious country in which we coexist together in harmony, and at the same time preserving our language and cultural identity. This is one of the uniqueness of Malaysia in comparison with other countries i.e. unity in diversity.

This year, Malaysia celebrates 60 years as an independent nation. From our humble and uncertain beginnings, we have grown and evolved significantly into a modern economy and society. We began our journey with the era of the New Economic Policy (1971-1990), we stepped into the era of 2020 with National Transformation Programme (NTP), and now we are looking into the next 30 years of development that is the National Transformation Programme 2050 (TN50).

As a nation, Malaysia believes that creating and establishing good political and trade relationship with countries around the world would enhance our peaceful coexistence and prosper our nation. Based on this believe and commitments we established our diplomatic relations with Argentina on 7 June 1967, and this year marked the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Malaysia-Argentina diplomatic

1 relations. The Embassy of Malaysia in Buenos Aires was established in 1989 and the Embassy of Argentina in was established in 1983.

Since we have established our diplomatic relations with Argentina, our bilateral relations between both countries remain close and cordial underpinned by common interests and close cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas. For the past 5 decades, relations between Malaysia and Argentina continue to enjoy steady progress with the substantial growth in bilateral and political relations, economic cooperation and the people-to-people relations.

It is heartening to note that more than 9,000 Argentines tourists visited Malaysia last year to experience `Malaysia Truly Asia’, the land of exciting diversity of cultures, festivals, traditions and customs. On the other hand, under the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), we have successfully provided human resource capacity building trainings for more than 30 officials of the Government of Argentina Republic in various fields.

As of today, Malaysia has six bilateral agreements and memorandum of understanding covering, trade, investment, finance, scientific cooperation, standardization and consular affairs. These agreements have proven to be a useful tool in paving the way for a meaningful and substantive interaction and cooperation between both countries for now and future.

Argentina is Malaysia’s third largest trading partner in Latin America. Total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Argentina was valued at USD1.22 billion in 2016. Malaysia’s export to Argentina, among others includes petroleum products and electrical and electronic products, whereas Malaysia’s imports from Argentina, among others, include manufactured goods and agricultural products.

Malaysia welcomes and supports Argentina’s efforts to deepen its engagement with South East Asia region especially with ASEAN. As one of the founding members of ASEAN, Malaysia is ready to be the gateway to ASEAN and other Asia Economies for Argentina and MERCOSUR to tap the potential market of 2.8 billion people. We hope that in the coming decades, Malaysia and Argentina would continue to prosper in all areas of cooperation and work closely for global peace and prosperity at all level. As to better facilitate trade and investment between both countries, the Embassy of Malaysia in Buenos Aires is working closely with Argentinian counterpart to establish the Malaysia-Argentina Business Council (MABC) by end of the year. This Business Council would be the catalyst for future trade and investment of both countries.

In celebrating the momentous occasion, both sides has agreed to undertake and organise various programs and activities which is ongoing in Kuala Lumpur and in Buenos Aires throughout the year. We look forward to work closely with Argentina and to further expand our cooperation in various other fields such as tourism, cultural exchange, sports, education, Halal and people-to-people exchange.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes and heartiest congratulations to the Government and the People of the Republic Argentina as we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of diplomatic relations between our two friendly nations.

Long live Malaysia – Argentina Relations!!!

Fifty years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Argentina

Last Wednesday (June 7) was not only Journalist’s Day but also the golden anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Argentina — a useful reminder that in two months’ time the 10-nation ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) regional bloc with a combined population of some 635 million people and a total economic output of US$2.8 trillion will be celebrating the golden anniversary of its creation.

Neither the size of Malaysia (330,000 square kilometers) nor its population (31.7 million) can be considered large, especially by Asian standards, but the country is unique for various reasons — it has the most multi-racial society in Asia (the Malay majority is just over half the population with important Chinese, Indian, indigenous and other minorities) and its export-driven economy is so open that it is one of the very few nations in the world whose trade volume (354 billion dollars) is not a certain fraction of its Gross Domestic Product (just under 300 billion) but considerably larger. Another unique feature is its rotating monarchy (Malaysia’s nine sultans take it in turns to be King every five years).

3

The diplomatic ties with Argentina came at a significant time for Malaysia — just 10 years after achieving independence from Britain in 1957 and two years after the separation with Singapore, thus prompting Malaysia to seek its own gateways to the world, as well as playing a key role in the creation of ASEAN that same year (1967).

Argentina was covered from Brazil until 1989 but the consolidation of democracy during that decade encouraged Malaysia to open its Embassy here in that year (Buenos Aires had already established its Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in 1983). Good political relations were soon followed in the next decade by close economic ties (including direct flights by Malaysian Airlines through to 2012) based on a productive triangle between three Ms — then-president Carlos Menem, Mahathir bin Mohammed (prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and a frequent unofficial visitor here) and Malaysian Ambassador Tan Sri Marzuki. Yet these ties failed to blossom in the new century due to Argentina’s 2001-2 meltdown and the isolationist tendencies of the subsequent governments. Until recently — the Mauricio Macri administration elected in late 2015 is viewed by Kuala Lumpur as more open to the world and Malaysia’s new ambassador here, Mohd Khalid Abbasi Abdul Razak (who only arrived on March 21 and has yet to present his credentials sometime this month), is dedicated to giving a new thrust to relations.

He has something to build on, all in Argentina’s favour — exports to Malaysia account for just over US$1 billion out of a bilateral trade volume of US$1.22 billion and Petronas (whose twin towers designed by Tucumán’s César Pelli dominate the Kuala Lumpur skyline) is a major partner of YPF in exploring Vaca Muerta shale with an initial investment of 550 million dollars. The new envoy would like to even this lopsided trade balance a bit but first he has a hot tip to boost Argentine sales even more — Malaysia is something of a halal hub in Asia (as well as a leader in Islamic finance) and could do much to revive Argentina’s lagging beef exports in that multi-trillion market.

MALAYSIAN ECONOMY GROWTH OUTLOOK REVISED TO 4.8 % FROM 4.2 %

KUALA LUMPUR: OCBC Bank has revised its growth outlook for the Malaysian economy from 4.2 per cent to 4.8 per cent for this year, saying its outlook looks conservative after the strong 5.6 per cent growth print in the first quarter.

This was due to a baseline expectation that global trade will still proceed apace in the second half looks to be a rational one at this point. Initially, it expected 2017 to be a tough year for export dependent Malaysia due to the protectionist politics in the developed world would impede global trade flows. “Fortunately, as it turns out, such dejected despair has not been warranted,”the research house said, in a report on its second half outlook for 2017. “While there remains some risks that whatever fears of protectionism that we had earlier this year may yet pop up as an unpleasant surprise, a baseline expectation that global trade will still proceed apace in the second half looks to be a rational one at this point.” Despite the new US government’s protectionism messages, global trade flows actually picked up rather encouragingly. Against this backdrop, instead of being dragged down by a massive global trade slowdown, Malaysia’s economy was in fact boosted by the pleasant surprise of robust trade flows. Exports grew strongly in the first quarter of the year, by an average of 21.4 per cent year-on-year per month. “The strong momentum appears to have some tailwinds to it still, with April’s print coming in at a still- commendable 20.6 per cent year-on-year.” The strong exports appear to have been driven by good demand for Malaysia’s manufactured goods, including semiconductor devices while the recovery in both the prices and demand volume for commodities such as crude oil, LNG and rubber has also contributed to the encouraging upturn. “Apart from help from external factors aside, the economy has also received a fillip from domestic consumption.” It was referring to private investment which grew by 12.9 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter compared to 4.9 per cent year-on-year in the previous quarter. Private consumption continued to power on with a 6.6 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter this year, compared to 6.1 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter. The central bank also recently said growth will be mainly driven by domestic demand amid continued wage and employment growth, and the implementation of new and on-going investment projects. NST.

DO YOU KNOW…???

The ’s flag, which dates back to 1812, is wrapped in a curious mix of revolutionary fighting for independence from Spain and Incan sun worship. The Argentine flag has three horizontal bands; the top and bottom ones are light blue, and the middle is white. The Argentine flag colours’ meaning is disputed. Some say the white represents silver. Early conquistadors named the country Argentina after the Latin word Argentinum, meaning silver, thinking that the region contained vast amounts of the precious metal. The blue bands may represent the sky, the waters of Argentina’s Rio de la Plata, or the blue used by the Spanish royal house of Bourbon on their coat of arms. Observing the flag, our gaze is immediately attracted to its center, where we find its most striking feature: a human face wearing a neutral expression inside a gold disc with straight and wavy rays emitting from its center, representing a sun. The sun, named el sol de mayo (the sun of May) after Argentina’s , which eventually lead to the nation’s independence from Spain, is a national emblem. Argentine coinage dating back to 1813 has an image of the same sun, as does the Uruguayan flag (differing only in the amount of rays), and early versions of the Peruvian flag. Juan de Dios Tupac Amaru (1760-1843), a Peruvian descendant of Incan nobility, designed The Sun of May, which pays tribute to the Incan sun God Inti. The Incas worshipped the sun and its life giving power. They believed that their ruler was a direct descendant of the sun, and they built sun temples throughout their empire. The original 1813 national anthem of Argentina also makes dramatic, lyrical reference to Incas, assuring that their dead “are shaken, and in their bones the ardor revives, for the sons of the homeland, ancient splendour”. Argentine politician and revolutionary military leader, Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820) designed the flag itself. He based the design on the cockade of Argentina that he created in 1812, a circular logo similar to the Argentine flag with a light blue circular band following its perimeter, a white inner band of the same width and a light blue dot in the middle creating bull’s-eye looking image. The cockade is also a national emblem and National Cockade Day is celebrated May 18th. The cockade and the flag were designed shortly after the 1810 May Revolution, which eventually helped lead to Argentina’s independence from Spain, as a source of identity for the nation as it fought for its freedom. Argentine revolutionary soldiers wore the cockade and swore allegiance to the flag to show loyalty. Their blue colours also differentiated them from the red used by Spanish royalist forces.

National Flag Day is celebrated on June 20th, the day of Belgrano’s death. Besides designing the flag and cockade, Belgrano is remembered for his involvement in extensive freedom fighting campaigns, particularly in the upper Peru region. Flag Day celebrations are most vibrant in Rosario, the place where Argentina’s flag was first raised in 1812. Here, every year on Flag Day, public officials make speeches and police, armed forces and war veterans among others participate in a parade to honor the flag. Recently, the people of Rosario created what some call the longest flag in the world. This flag, carried by people from Rosario, also makes an appearance in the parade. National Flag Day celebrations honor Argentina’s flag, a flag which reminds us of the nation’s forefathers that fought for the independence modern Argentines enjoy and celebrate today.
