ITALIAN BREEDERS RALLY TO SUPPORT SALE MORGAN FINDS NEW By Emma Berry NICHE CONSIGNING MILAN, Italy--Even before it has started, the SGA Select Yearling Sale is already up on last year in that the catalogue has almost doubled in size. For many sales companies in the current climate that would be a concern, but in Milan it is cause for cheer, with the number of yearlings sent to the country's main sale having fallen to just 98 in 2017. That coincided with a change of venue to 'La Maura' trotting track next to San Siro racecourse and in its second year at the new premises, which was once the training stables of Bruno Grizzetti, the sale has grown to 167 yearlings catalogued plus a wildcard (lot 112b). "I'm really pleased to see that breeders have come back in numbers to support the sale," said Massimo Parri, owner of Le.Gi Stud and in his first year as Chairman of Italy's Breeders' Association (ANAC), which hosts the sale. Morgan will have her hands full at Tattersalls Ireland next week when she offers a draft of five yearlings in the two-day September Yearling Sale with a further three in Part II of the sale on Thursday. Morgan has never been one to sugarcoat a situation and she surprised many when winding up her training career early in 2015, just two years after saddling Roca Tumu (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) to win the Britannia S. at Royal Ascot. Roca Tumu would then be sold to Hong Kong, where he raced for Tony Cruz as Beauty Flame and was twice runner up at the highest level as well as winning the G2 Jockey Club Mile at Sha Tin. Despite such success as a trainer, Morgan said she felt the daily grind of her then-vocation, for meagre reward, just wasn't worth the hassle it entailed and she said the day she handed in her licence felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

This focus on colts, stallion brokerage and breeding portfolios JAMES HARRON Q & A is entering a hugely exciting stage this year. We brokered the stallion deal on Pierro (whose son Rome we are looking forward to cheering on in the Breeders= Plate next week as a representative of the JHB colt group). Firmly establishing himself as an elite stallion and yearling purchase, Foxwedge is also doing a great job with his first few crops of runners. Coming through we have another yearling purchase in Wandjina, whose first runners at the trials have been very promising, Vancouver having his first yearlings selling in January, yearling purchase Capitalist siring outstanding foals and yearling purchase Pariah entering stud at Arrowfield with a stellar book of mares booked to him, a number of which are from owners within our colt partnership. Given the focus on colts for the bloodstock arm of the company, JHB Syndications, which is a public syndication James Harron | Inglis photo company, is focused solely on fillies to avoid any conflicts and by Bren O'Brien takes advantage of the great value that can be found at the sales TDN AusNZ's Bren O'Brien recently caught up with James Harron for the running style of filly which we are targeting. to chat through the development of the bloodstock and We have linked JHB Syndications with some of the leading syndication aspects of his business. trainers throughout Australia, namely David Hayes and Tony McEvoy in Victoria alongside Brad Widdup and Gary Portelli in James Harron Bloodstock, which focuses on colts, stallion New South Wales. brokerage and breeding portfolios continues to develop while on the fillies' side, JHB Syndications is also growing its profile with sponsorship of Saturday's G2 Golden Pendant at Rosehill.

Bren O'Brien: You've developed an interesting business, tackling the colts= and fillies= markets in different capacities. Talk us through the components of the James Harron business.

James Harron: At the core of the bloodstock business is our colt partnership, where we buy a number of yearling colts at public auction, with the aim of developing them into stallion prospects and all of these colts go into training with Peter and Paul Snowden. Colts who may not make it to the elite level are traded to on sale markets and we are pleased to have sold a number of Capitalist | Magic Millions photo subsequent winners, domestically and in both Hong Kong and Singapore. B O'B: How important is the syndication model for building the next generation of thoroughbred owners? Cont. p3 JH: I think it is crucially important for the industry to get syndication right. It is important to recognise that syndication is as important to everyone involved as outright ownership and our aim with JHB Syndications is to give people the full ownership experience whether they have a 2.5% share or a 25% share. We are proud that by diligently scouring the market, we are able to offer share prices that are very affordable, starting at around $2,000 and give everybody the chance to race a horse with one of Australia=s best trainers. What we are finding is that people are enjoying getting involved with a few horses and spreading their risk across a few trainers, which I think is a great way of building a nice portfolio and having fun alongside plenty of racing action. While syndication can naturally be a great and important gateway for people to get more heavily involved in ownership, our absolute focus is to provide a complete and professionally- Vega Magic | Bronwen Healy photo managed ownership experience through syndication and, of course, the main focus of getting winners! JH: There=s great competition in the syndication space, which speaks volumes about the overall strength of the industry here in Australia, and the fantastic appetite for horse ownership, so we are always looking for ways to stand out. Our sponsorship of the Golden Pendant is part of a broader partnership with the ATC, which will see us produce a series of educational videos, taking people behind the scenes of racehorse ownership as another facet of our aim of educating and de-mystifying the whole process.

JH: My focus with the company has been to build a great, dynamic team of people with the skill sets to rise to any challenge, and I am confident that we have achieved that. Alongside the JHB team we have a tremendous group of owners involved with the colts, who have always got behind our visions and have been justly rewarded with some great success on the race track and the sales ring. JHB Syndications is the newest challenge that our team has taken on, and I am looking forward to seeing this project through to similar success that we have had in the colt and breeding portfolio projects, both of which are crucial cornerstones to the ongoing story of JHB.

COMEBACKING MCKINZIE MARTY WOLFSON TRYING TO PICK UP THE PIECES OF A SHATTERED CAREER & LIFE HEADLINES PA DERBY By Bill Finley WILLISTON, Fla.--Marty Wolfson was born into wealth, the son of Louis Wolfson, who owned 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed. He grew up on a picturesque farm in Ocala and loved spending his youth around the horses that called Harbor View Farm home. He didn=t want to be a Wall Street financier like his father; he wanted to write his own story and train Thoroughbreds. When he was just 18, he secured a few stalls at Calder and impressed people with his work ethic and knowledge. In time, Wolfson was among the most respected trainers, not just in Florida, but in the country, the winner of a Breeders= Cup race and 318 stakes races over all. TDN Q & A: SHUG MCGAUGHEY AND RANDY TDN: So let's get into the race itself. They're about half way down the back stretch. Winning Colors is going easily on the ROMERO by Bill Finley lead and Personal Ensign? Well, she seemed to be spinning her Over 34 years and hundreds of races, the Breeders' Cup has wheels. At that point, were you worried? Were you worried provided many a thrill and many a great race. But virtually before then? What did you think as Winning Colors was three, everyone agrees that one race stands alone--the 1988 Distaff four lengths in front and seemingly going comfortably down won by Personal Ensign. It may have been the greatest Breeders' the backstretch? Cup race ever run. This year marks the 30th anniversary of that race. In the latest Thoroughbred Daily News podcast, brought to SM: I was never really comfortable because she got back farther you by Taylor Made, we looked back at this great race with than she usually does even though she came from back. Then trainer Shug McGaughey and jockey Randy Romero. Excerpts from that podcast are below: we got to the half-mile pole and nothing was happening. She used to start picking up her horses then. And then at the 3/8- pole I was standing with a friend of mine and he kind of looked at me and I kind of looked at him and I said >it doesn=t look like it today.= Then all of a sudden she started making that run, but Winning Colors was still comfortably in front. I didn't think she was going to be able to catch her, I just wanted to make a good account of herself. Then BAM! She did catch her, but Randy told me it was never in doubt.

TDN: Randy, of the millions of people watching the race you may have been the only person who believed she was going to win, even when it looked impossible. What did you know?

Personal Ensign (outside) bests Winning Colors in the RR: Because I rode Winning Colors when she broke her maiden. 1988 GI Breeders= Cup Distaff | Horsephotos I always knew she came up late. The way the track was, Gary [Stevens] had opened up a lot of lengths on the field. The field TDN: Shug, not only had you already beaten Winning Colors in was spreading so I knew I was going pretty fast. The timing the Maskette, but Winning Colors' prep in the Spinster was not wasn't fast, but the track was muddy, but it was still going fast. I very good. It looked at the time that perhaps she was not had rode her in that race and she'd get late at the end, so I just coming into the race in her best form. What did you think of her as a competitor coming into the race? never gave up on my filly. I could see when I switched my stick to my left hand at the 3/8-pole or the 5/16-pole that she got on SM: I agree with you. We'd beat her pretty fair and square going a hard surface and she started picking up horses. The last a mile here doing what she wanted to do and then she went to sixteenth of a mile, I could feel her accelerating to get to that the Spinster and threw a real dud in. [D.] Wayne [Lukas]'s always filly. I passed by Goodbye Halo and she thought it was over. But had a way of having horses bouncing back and, obviously, she when she looked over to the other side, she saw Winning Colors. liked the sloppy track at Churchill. She was pretty much at home She was brilliant this filly, this mare. She looked over and saw there. She ran an outstanding race, but I don't think going into it her. She dug in again. I used to ride Quarter Horses. In those that I was really that ... I mean I was concerned, but I wasn't races you win by inches and feet. So when you ride Quarter overly concerned really because we beat her and then she had Horses you know when you can win and not. It=s something you run such a bad race in the Spinster. I think there were some sense. others that maybe had my eye a little bit more than her, including Goodbye Halo. Cont. p7

I don't think there has TDN: As you mentioned earlier, at about the 3/8-pole or so, been one since. It would have been a shame if she would have maybe a little closer to the quarter-pole, you were down on gotten beat that day after all she'd done. But to be able to have the inside. Why did you make that something that's a career maker. I think that a lot of the awards decision to get off the rail and go to the middle of the track? that I've gotten have been because of her career. It's very satisfying to me to look back on it and think that we all went RR: Some instinct made me do it. I don't know why I did it. It's through that together. Joe Hirsch, years ago, gave me a poster just an instinct that I had to do something because I wasn't that I've got framed in my office of all the 13 races. I will getting anywhere where I was. It's still exciting for me. I did, she adjusted out. It was just like an act of God that it never have watched the replay that much. The next summer we happened. I don't know why I did it. People ask me that all the were at Saratoga and every time you turned the TV on they'd time. It's just an instinct that I had to do something and there show the finish of the race. But as for me sitting down watching was nothing I was doing that was correct. So it just came to my the rerun that much, I haven't because it's still kind of scary to mind to do it.
