War Room Wins Box Office
War Room Wins Box Office Over the Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4-7), the faith-based family drama War Room exceeded expectations by earning $12.6 million from 1,526 locations and taking the top spot of box office sales. It also opened as the #1 faith-based movie of 2015 and the highest in the genre since Heaven Is for Real (in April 2014). War Room is the fifth film from Alex and Stephen Kendrick (Courageous, Fireproof, Facing the Giants, Flywheel), and has enjoyed media coverage from outlets such as Associated Press, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Forbes, USA Today, Entertainment Tonight, CBS, FOX News, and others. Actor/writer/director Alex Kendrick and his brother, producer/co-writer Stephen Kendrick, did exactly what one would expect devout Christians to do when it came to their latest film: they prayed for it to succeed. “We didn’t wake up one day wanting to make a movie about a 75-year-old woman’s prayer closet,” Stephen explains. “We asked God to order our steps, and the ideas came. As filmmakers, we’re laying tracks before a moving train.” “People have plans for everything in life: careers, finances, health. But what about a strategy for prayer to affect our lives, our spouses, and our children?” Alex asks. “We want to inspire, challenge, and motivate families to not just react but to plan through the right kind of battles—and to use the best resources possible.” Adds Stephen: “We’re after something here to radically improve our culture, and we want moviegoers to experience it in an inspiring and emotional story. -

War Room a Review of the Movie and the Industry Surrounding It “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. War Room is the latest offering from fraternal film makers Alex and Stephen Kendrick. As is the case with their previous films, War Room is marketed to a Christian audience and written from an evangelical worldview. The movie stars Priscilla Shirer and T.C. Stallings as Elizabeth and Tony Jordan, a married couple with one young daughter named Danielle. Though the Jordans are materially prosperous (Tony is a pharmaceutical salesman and Elizabeth is a Real Estate Agent), their marriage is very unhealthy. The couple argues over money, family relations, has an inactive sex life, and pays so little attention to Danielle that the young girl feels isolated and unloved. To make matters worse, Elizabeth has foul-smelling feet (which are used as a comedic device throughout the film) The Plot An old black woman, played by Karen Abercrombie, named Clara Williams befriends Elizabeth. The Clara character is a stereotypical older evangelical black woman with a notably active prayer life. Clara meets Elizabeth in the context hiring Elizabeth to sell her house. The audience (and Elizabeth) later learn that Clara had been praying for God to send her someone to disciple and feels like Elizabeth is the answer to that prayer. -

Mann, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between Hollywood and American Christianity from 1998 to the present—a time frame that encompasses the recent rise of the “Christian blockbusters.” This period saw unprecedented interaction between Hollywood and what has been called the “Christian film industry,” or “Holywood”—a loose and ever-changing assortment of Christian film companies and independent filmmakers that have operated in one form or another since the silent era and whose productions were, until recently, primarily relegated to local theatrical markets, church screenings, and Christian television. Although historically unprecedented, this new interaction between Hollywood and “Holywood” can be understood as a clear extension of the rise of both new media technology and transmedia industries. This ii dissertation argues that a once not-for-profit filmmaking exercise by Christian filmmakers, for the purposes of inner-church ministry, has now become a huge business built upon selling films to churches as resources for both inner-church ministry and outer-church evangelism. -

Sean O’Connor DSG 642 Dr. Walker 19 September 2015 War Room: Media Criticism Paper #1 Earning almost $40 million domestically in its first two weeks of theatrical release, as well as a number-two opening at the box office and a number-one spot the following weekend, War Room (2015) has become the most financially successful movie for filmmaking brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick. The Kendrick brothers, former pastors at a Baptist church in Georgia who went to seminary rather than film school, were self-taught as they began to make feature films for use in ministry. However, with the unprecedented financial success of their low-budget films Facing the Giants (2006), Fireproof (2008), and Courageous (2011), the platform for the brothers to share their work has grown substantially over the past decade. In that time, although their storytelling has not yet been perfected, their skills in that regard has improved as well. In terms of its plot and characters, War Room shares several similarities with its predecessors. Themes addressed in the film such as marriage, parenting, prayer, and mentorship have also been addressed in the Kendrick brothers’ four previous films (the three aforementioned as well as Flywheel, their micro-budget debut in 2003). Character arcs also overlap from those films to War Room. For example, protagonist Elizabeth Jordan attempts to restore her marriage with her husband Tony, while he is tempted to begin another romantic relationship – a scenario similar to that of Caleb Holt and his wife Catherine in Fireproof. Even certain scenes in War Room are reminiscent of scenes in the previous Kendrick brothers’ films. -

Writing a Christian Movie: An Analysis of the Motion Picture Fireproof (2008) Sean O’Connor DSG 692 December 11, 2014 Writing a Christian Movie 1 Introduction Sherwood Pictures is a ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, started by associate pastors and brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Seeing filmmaking as a way to impact the culture,1 they began making films affirming Christian values, first with Flywheel (2003), a film made for $20,000 about a used car salesman who finds Christ and becomes an honest man. Their second film, Facing the Giants (2006), about a high school football team that trusts in God and begins a winning streak, was picked up for theatrical distribution and, on a $100,000 budget, earned an unprecedented $10 million. But Sherwood’s success didn’t end there: their third film was Fireproof (2008), the story of a firefighter facing divorce whose father gives him a 40-day devotional which leads him to God and helps him restore his marriage. On a $500,000 budget, the film made $33 million, opening at number four at the U.S. box office.2 The success of Fireproof led to more opportunities for Sherwood Pictures, including a fourth film, Courageous (2011), and a fifth to be released in the fall of 2015.3 But the film also opened the doors for what Ben Howard, senior vice president of Provident Films (distributor of Sherwood’s films), called “the dawning of the new era of independent Christian films.”4 Works such as Provident’s own The Grace Card (2010) and October Baby (2011), among others, have created a “brand”5 of films “made, marketed, and consumed by the same faithful audience.”6 2014 has thus become “the year of the Christian film.”7 A decade after the success of The Passion of the Christ (2004) (which made over $600 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget),8 big-budget Biblical epics like Son of God, Noah, and Exodus: Gods and Kings have found wide theatrical distribution, but so have much smaller, independently produced 1 Russell, James. -
