Game preview

Jan. 16, 2015 Jared Porter, CMUChippewas.com MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan women’s basketball team looks to remain unbeaten in the Mid-American Conference on Saturday when it travels to Athens, Ohio to square off with Ohio. CMU (9-6, 4-0 MAC) is coming off a 60-54 league win over Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday, coach Sue Guevara’s 250th career victory. There’s little time to celebrate the milestone as Guevara prepares the Chippewas the well-rounded Bobcats (12-3, 3-1), who have won six of their last seven games and ranked 25th in the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. “(Ohio is) a very good offensive team and they have guards that can really shoot it,” said Guevara, whose team is one spot behind the Bobcats in the poll. “They are averaging eight made threes a game. They do a really nice job of defensively packing it in and working you to hit the outside jumper.” Three Bobcats average more than 10 points per game. Quiera Lampkins and Lexie Baldwin come in averaging 13.5 and 10.1, respectively, while Kiyanna Black leads Ohio at 15.2 per game. “I thought Northern Illinois was a pretty good defensive team, but watching OU on tape, they are very disciplined defensively,” said Guevara, referring to the Chippewas’ 56-43 victory over NIU on Saturday. “I think we’re going to have to tweak our defense a little bit and continue work on getting our offensive consistency -- our short jumpers and our threes.” The Bobcats rank second in the MAC in scoring offense this season, averaging 72.9 points per game. The Chippewas are close behind that mark at 69.3 PPG and rank fourth in the conference. Ohio also ranks second in the conference in scoring margin with an average point differential of plus-15, and is fourth in points allowed per game (57.9). CMU is eighth in the MAC at plus-2.2 and is 11th defensively (67.1). Guevara noted that one of the keys in Saturday’s game would be three-point shooting, an area in which the Chippewas have struggled of late. The Chippewas made 44 percent (11-for-25) of their triple tries in their MAC opener against Kent State, but has gone a combined 8-for-48 (16.6 percent) in the ensuing three games. Senior Kerby Tamm could be the player to spark the Chippewas attack from deep, as she made 4-of-8 three-pointers against Miami on Wednesday. Senior Crystal Bradford is coming off her 49th career double-double after dropping 22 points and 15 boards against the RedHawks. Junior guard Da’Jourie Turner also impressed with 13 points and seven rebounds against Miami. Since taking over at point guard for the injured Jessica Green before the MAC opener against Kent State, Turner is averaging 10.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

BRADFORD NAMED TO NAISMITH WOMEN’S 50 WATCH LIST

Dec. 10, 2014 ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Tipoff Club Announced Wednesday, December 10th, the 2014-15 Naismith Trophy Women’s 50 Watch List which included Central Michigan senior Crystal Bradford. The Naismith Trophy recognizes the NCAA’s National Player of the Year. Bradford, the reigning Player and Defensive Player of the Year, becomes the first player named to the Watch List from the MAC since the 2012-13 season when Toledo’s Naama Shafir was named for the second consecutive season. This season Bradford has led the Chippewas to a 3-2 start against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Returning from a season-ending injury that sidelined her prior the 2014 MAC Tournament, Bradford is leading the Chippewas in points per game (17.3 ppg), rebounds per game (10.3 rpg), assists per game (3.8 apg) and steals per game (2.5 spg). Bradford joins Britni Houghton as the second student-athlete from Central Michigan to be named to the watch list. Houghton was named to the 2008-09 watch list along with Western Michigan’s Tiera DeLaHoussaye. Other MAC women’s basketball individuals to be named to the watch list include Bowling Green’s Lauren Prochaska in 2010- 11, and the aforementioned Naama Shafir in 2011-12 and 12-13 seasons. The next Naismith announcement will come in February when the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the Midseason 30. History of the Naismith Trophy Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, founder of the game of basketball, the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is awarded annually to the women’s and men’s college basketball players of the year. First awarded in 1969 to UCLA’s Lew Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Naismith Trophy was sculpted by Marty C. Dawe of Atlanta and has become the most prestigious national honors awarded each year to the top women’s and men’s college basketball players in the nation. Each year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s board of selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, vote on player performance to ultimately select the winners. Unique among national awards of this caliber, the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T, allows fans to contribute an unprecedented 25 percent of the final vote for the women’s and men’s players of the year and the women’s and men’s coaches of the year using the text messaging functions on their cellular telephones. Established in 1987, the Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year Award and the Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year Award were originally given to the coaches of the women’s and men’s NCAA Division I Tournament champions. In 1989, the governing board changed the selection criteria to the voting process used today. Each year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s board of selectors first votes to compile a top-25 list of coaches for each award. Then, through additional votes, the list is narrowed down to four and finally the eventual winner. Also in 1987, to honor the nation’s best girl’s and boy’s high school basketball players, the Naismith Trophy Girl’s High School Player of the Year and the Naismith Trophy Boy’s High School Player of the Year were established. Each honor is selected annually by the Atlanta Tipoff Club board of selectors. The board votes to compile a top-10 list of players from across the country for both awards. The winners are then selected by a board vote. About Atlanta Tipoff Club Founded during the 1956-57 season, the Atlanta Tipoff Club, an Atlanta Sports Council property, is committed to promoting the game of basketball and recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of those who make the game so exciting. The Atlanta Tipoff Club administers the Naismith Awards, which have become the most prestigious national honors in all of college basketball. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T recognizes the top Men’s and Women’s College Basketball Players of the Year. Other Naismith Awards are presented to the Men’s and Women’s College Basketball Coaches of the Year, Boy’s and Girl’s high school basketball players and coaches of the year, high school scholar- athletes, basketball officials, student sections and overall contributors to the game. The Naismith Trophy was first presented to UCLA’s Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) in 1969. Old Dominion’s Anne Donovan won the inaugural Women’s Naismith Trophy in 1983.

highest scoring team in the country in 2013-14 with 82.1 points per game. CMU averaged 80.5 points per contest in 2010-11 (third) for its highest finish under Guevara. Records set under Guevara’s watch include the individual and team single-game scoring records, the individual single-game made field goals, single- game steals and single-game blocks marks, the team single-game three-pointers and free throws made records, most rebounds in a single game, and her team in 2011-12 went 16 straight games without committing more then 20 turnovers. Niki DiGuilio set the program’s single-season three-point record (100) and all-time three-point record (288) during her four-year career. Guevara has also seen the single-season field goals record set on two different occassions by Crystal Bradford, while the junior set the single-season scoring record with 588 points during her junior campaign. The top-two team point totals in program history have also come under Guevara, as well as the top-five three-pointers made totals. CMU set a program record with 294 three-point field goals during the 2013-14 season, ranking fifth in the country with 9.2 three-point field goals per game. The Chippewas have also set a new team single-game record for three-point field goals in each of Guevara’s seven seasons, highlighted by 18 versus Xavier on Nov. 30, 2013 at the Paradise Jam. With a chance to return to the state she loved after three years at Auburn, Guevara became the Chippewas’ 10th head coach in April 2007. The Michigan native brought 30 seasons of coaching experience at the collegiate level to the sidelines of Rose Arena, including seven seasons of head coaching experience at the University of Michigan. She is U of M’s all-time winningest coach both in total wins (123) and winning percentage (.600). During her time with the Wolverines, she also piled up the most Big Ten wins (57) and the best conference winning percentage (.510) of any head women’s basketball coach in U of M’s history. Five of Michigan’s six postseason appearances came during Guevara’s time on the bench. Prior to CMU, Guevara served as an assistant coach at Auburn for three seasons under Nell Fortner, head coach of the gold medal winning 1998 World Championship and 2000 Olympic teams. The Tigers advanced to the WNIT Elite Eight in 2006-07 and sent a pair of players to the WNBA during Guevara’s time there.

Guevara Turned Around Program at University of Michigan Guevara’s revitalization of the University of Michigan program occurred over seven seasons (1996-2003) as the Wolverines amassed a 123-82 record during her tenure. Michigan had gone 20-88 in the four seasons prior to her arrival. She took the Michigan program into the national spotlight with four consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in the program’s history and led Michigan to three NCAA Tournament bids (1998, 2000 and 2001), including a spot in the second round in 2001. The Wolverines also made a pair of appearances in the WNIT in 1999 and 2002. Guevara was twice named the Big Ten Coach of the Year (1998, 2000) and was named Michigan Coach of the Year in 2000. She developed Stacey Thomas into Michigan’s first Kodak All-American in 2000 and the school’s first four-time All-Big Ten selection. Guevara coached 17 All-Big Ten honorees including the lone first team selections in Michigan history, Pollyanna Johns in 1998 and Stacey Thomas in 2000. The Wolverines were ranked as high as No. 12 nationally during the 2001-02 season and again in 2002-03. The 1999-2000 squad set the school record for wins in a season with 22 and finished second in the Big Ten, Michigan’s highest finish ever. Four Wolverine players were selected in the WNBA Draft during Guevara’s time at Michigan. Guevara was at Michigan State as an assistant coach under Karen Langeland for nine seasons (1987-1995) before being promoted to associate head coach for her 10th season with MSU. The Spartans posted a record of 149-131 during Guevara’s time in East Lansing. Before MSU, Guevara spent a season as an assistant coach at Ball State after spending a year as a graduate assistant for Ohio State University in 1984- 85. The Buckeyes won the Big Ten championship and reached the regional finals that season. In addition, Guevara led the Big Ten All-Star team on a European tour through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary in 2000. She also was an assistant coach for the 1993 Big Ten tour team that recorded a perfect 6-0 record while playing in England and Scotland. Interestingly, Guevara’s coaching career began on the softball diamond. She served as Saginaw Valley State’s head softball coach from 1979-84 in addition to her hardwood duties as an assistant coach. She was named GLIAC Softball Coach of the Year in 1984. Guevara is a native of Saginaw, Mich. where she attended Saginaw St. Stephens High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Saginaw Valley State University in 1982 and her master’s degree in athletic administration from Ohio State in 1985.
