Total: 333 cars Formation 2, 3, or 4-car sets The British Rail Class 108 diesel multiple units were built by BR Derby from 1958 to 1961, with a final production quantity of 333 vehicles. Class 108 DMU, nos. 56208 and 51935, at Bewdley on 15 October 2004. This unit is preserved on the Severn Valley Railway. These units stayed in regular service until 1990, when they began to be withdrawn from traffic. They were replaced on regional services by the new "Sprinter" derivative units, or by "Turbo" units on services around London. The final units lasted in traffic until October 1993, although many saw further use in departmental service, as sandite or route-learner units. Good condition on withdrawal and lack of asbestos has ensured that many of this class are now used on preserved railway lines.     Oasis Rail Transit Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) Fact Sheet February 2016 Approximately 17 miles in length, the proposed Oasis Rail Transit corridor extends between downtown Cincinnati and the City of Milford and would initially be served by seven stations. In addition to providing a new rail-based regional transportation option serving Eastern Corridor communities, the Oasis line would also offer new opportunities for community enhancement and development. PREFERRED RAIL VEHICLE TYPE: DMU One of the most prominent features considered for the Oasis line is the actual rail vehicle (or train) that would transport passengers to their destinations. Early studies completed for the Eastern Corridor Program recommended that self-propelled passenger coaches be considered as the preferred rail vehicle type. Further studies explored in more detail the technologies available for the line including: • Diesel-powered locomotives pulling single or bi-level passenger coaches • Electrically-powered streetcar-type vehicles • Electrically-powered light rail vehicles call Electric Multiple Units (EMU/LRT) • Diesel-powered passenger cars (Diesel Multiple Units or DMUs) The results of those studies confirmed that diesel-powered passenger cars, or DMUs, would be the most appropriate technology for the Oasis Rail Transit line. The NRM, Locomotion and Science & Industry Museum in Manchester (SIM) will continue to operate a select number of rail vehicles from our collection. Showing our collections in action is one of the most direct tools we have to share our key values with visitors: revealing wonder, igniting curiosity and sharing authentic stories. What’s more, our visitors expect a train ride. We need to meet that expectation whilst managing our collection in the most professional and responsible manner. A commercially viable and deliverable plan will see a core selection of operating vehicles at York and Locomotion within the maintenance capabilities of teams at those locations. These have been chosen for reasons of accessibility, affordability, income potential, attractiveness to visitors, practicality of operation and sustainable repair as well as the railway stories they reveal. We use our rail vehicles in various ways with priority always given for static display for our visitors at York and Shildon. Other ways in which we use them are: operation on museum sites; static loans to accredited museums; operating loans to heritage railways; main line operation. Our loans reach diverse audiences across the UK, making the national collection accessible to many. These vehicles are brand ambassadors for our mission of inspiring future engineers and scientists.

    The Railcar Association Bulletin November 2011 Introduction A busy bulletin this time thanks to the number of contributions and the coincidental number of newsworthy events that have involved DMUs over the last two months. The highlight was of course the annual convention which we are pleased to report came off without a hitch. The Association would like to thank the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway for their efforts in accommodating us. It may be a cliché but I had feedback from several individuals who thought the convention was one of the best in recent years. Following feedback from members, we have agreed the dates and venue for the next convention nice and early, so there will be no excuses for not getting time off work! I hope you all agree that the choice for next years event is a good one. Finally, a separate “Restoration & Overhauls” section has been included this issue, as groups have clearly been busy this autumn doing lots of work on preserved vehicles. 17th Annual Railcar Convention The Railcar Association are pleased to announce that the 17th Annual Convention will be held at the Great Central Railway from Friday 7th September to Sunday 9th September 2012. This will be the first time the Great Central have hosted the event, which should prove unique with the railway’s mainline ethos and five mile double track section. Following feedback from members, the initial announcement has been made earlier than normal so delegates have plenty of time to make arrangements with work etc. This means much of the weekend is still to be planned and confirmed, and updates will be released during 2012.
