MILES MEREDITH

After loosing in midweek, Manchester United came back strong and won to their near rivals Manchester City.

After going up 2-0 in the first half, Wayne Rooney put them in front after 20 minutes, then scoring another goal running into the near post.

In the second half, Manchester City were erged on by their supporting fans and managed to get two goals from Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta, arriving in from the edge of the box.

It looked like the match would finish in a draw but in the 90th minute, Robin Van Persie won a freekick and diverted it home due to a problem in the Manchester city wall.

Alex Ferguason was very pleased with the result and said that it was “a good game – a special one” he also added the words saying “the game was engrossing and it shows how good the premier league actually is”

However it was the first defeat for the Home side, Manchester City, who haven’t lost since December 20th 2010 against Everton.

A incredible day for the away side. THE HOBBIT PREMIER

BY ANANDA CHATTERJEE

Yesterday, the UK premier of Peter Jackson’s new film, The Hobbit, showcased in with the whole cast attending. Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Andy Serkis (Gollum), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and the director, Peter Jackson were the main people on the green (not red) carpet. Also, making a special appearance was the Duke of Cambridge! However, the Duchess of Cambridge couldn’t attend due to morning-sickness. The Duke of Cambridge said ‘She would have loved to have been here’.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first of the trilogy which cost over £300 million to produce!! The film is shot in 3D and 48fs (frames per second). This is basically HHD. It’s faster, brighter and much more detailed. However, it was met with mixed reviews. The movie itself, however; was very well received with early positive reviews praising the cinematography, acting and music. The pacing and length, however; was criticised and critics say it’s not as good as the original Lord of the Rings trilogy but still very good. The rest of the UK will have to wait until the weekend to see the film for itself!

ARSENAL GOING DOWNHILL

BY ELLIOT KING

Most people would say Arsenal is going downhill; not having won a single trophy since the 2005 FA cup. Most are blaming this on the current manager, Arsene Wenger. Arsene Wenger has been manager since 1996, and many people are saying it is time for him to retire. This season Arsenal has started to pick up again. This could be due to their recent signing of Luca Podolski, who seems to be doing well and boosting the team’s morale. Unfortunately for them, Arsenal have been recently knocked out of the Carling Cup leading to another loss of a trophy. Currently, Arsenal are in 7th place, which is a position I am sure they are disappointed in. Perhaps Arsenal can pull it back, although it seems as though most people are in doubt about winning any silver wear this year.

THE HEAT IS ON AFTER VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN RUSSIA

BY SEBASTIAN YELESEN SHHL

In the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Plosky Tolbachic volcano has erupted, leaving people living nearby struck with thoughts of an apocalypse and local Geologists baffled.

The last time the Plosky Tolbachic erupted was over 36 years ago and after all that time the volcano erupting was quite a surprise!

The nearby authorities have their eyes peeled for any more volcanic activity in the area and are trying to predict what will happen next.

CHRISTMAS TV FOR THE PUPILS OF KINGS!

BY HATTIE COLE

One of the best things about Christmas day is looking forward to a Christmas special of your favourite TV shows. Luckily for you, I am going to direct you to the brilliant TV shows which are worth watching this year!

Call The Midwife-25th December BBC1 7:30pm

Unfortunately I have not seen this show but there have been excellent reviews. This show is about an abandoned baby found on the doorstep, where the whole community chips in to provide care for this child, whilst trying to trace down its mother. As I haven’t seen this show, I cannot give an established opinion but, “” involves the comedian Miranda Hart. As I and many others, are a big fan of Miranda Hart, mostly from her comedy “Miranda”, I will be watching this TV show on Christmas day.

You’ve been Framed Christmas special-25th December ITV1 5:00pm

I personally like watching ‘You’ve been Framed’ and it makes it even better that there will be a Christmas special. It gives regular people the chance to donate hilarious home videos along the theme of Christmas which, in most cases, lift our Christmas spirits! I will definitely be watching this fantastic and humorous show.

Downton Abbey Christmas Special-25th December ITV1 8:45pm

Downton Abbey episodes always live up to my expectations. It is a show based in the 1900s and appeals to many ages. Last year the show had their first Christmas special, which included the heart-wrenching trial of Bates’ the valet. That episode was extremely popular last year and the show has had many viewers ever since. There should be many people tuning in to watch this fantastic show as I definitely will be watching this Christmas special, but there is always that question: will it be as good as last year?

X FACTOR WINNERS... WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

IMOGEN SZERDY

This year was crowned winner of the biggest British show on television, . He has released a single and is doing very well, but will this last forever or just a short while? We have seen winners in their glory before such as Alexandra Burk, Leon Jackson, Joe McElderry and , remember them?

X factor is known for giving young talented people a big break but is that true, yes they may have a number 1 on Itunes when they very first win the show, but is this proof that the X factor is over rated?

Although there have been a few successful winners such as, and who seem to be living life to the full after their success in the journey on the show

THE LIVING LEGEND LIONEL MESSI

BY HARRY WILSON

Lionel Messi is debatebly the best player in the world at the current time. He has recently passed Gerd Mullers record of 85 goals in 1972. Messi has played 353 games in his club career and has scored 285 times. For his country he has played 76 games and has scored 31 goals. Messi has been said to be the best player ever. However, a lot of critics say Ronaldo is better as Messi has Iniesta and Xavi to assist him. There has been recent controversy as to wether Messi holds the world record because Godrey Chitalu supposedly scored 107 goals despite this not being official. Messi has won 3 Ballon d’or’s and has been nominated for a fourth, along with Iniesta and Christiano Ronaldo. Messi has often been compared to Diego Maradonna, as they are both Argentinian. He also scored a goal at almost exactly the same as Diego Maradonna.

KATE MIDDLETON IS PREGNANT

CHLOE JAMES

The Royal Family have received some wonderful news this week that Kate Middleton is pregnant with William. The family were forced to tell the public because Kate got rushed to hospital because of serious morning sickness which got out of control. Later in the day she got diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Some people are wondering whether Kate Middleton is too thin to be pregnant and that she might even suffer from pregorexia- a toxic mix of eating disorders and the weight gain that can come with pregnancy. Kate Middleton is now 12 weeks pregnant. We have found out that two Australian radio presenters prank called the hospital where she was staying and the radio presenters asked the nurse (who answered the phone) to pass them onto Kate. After they had talked to Kate they asked the nurse for medical details the nurse told her about all of her results. The nurse that answered the phone then found out that they were prank calling the hospital, she then committed suicide because she felt vulnerable.

INTER-FORM COMPETITION DOUBLE WIN FOR 3RA

JAMES HUGHES

3RA have won two consecutive inter-form competitions in a row, the paper plane throwing and cake sale competitions. They had a decisive win in the paper plane contest thrashing all the other forms and gaining maximum 5 points whilst 3RL on 4, 3JJ on 3, 3JM on 2 and 3HB on a disappointing 1 point. The next competition in line was the credits and detentions competition and despite a valiant effort in the Paper plane competition 3RA only managed 2 points in it whilst 3HB turned their loss into a win, it was looking bad for 3RA... However this wasn’t the case as they smashed their way through the next competition, the cake sale, scoring a maximum of 10 points after using their joker (double points) and were followed by 3RL on 4 points, 3JM on 3, and 3HB on 2 points joint with 3JJ who despite using their joker came last! We still have the Hockey, Dodge ball, Spanish and the remaining Credit and Detention competitions still to come later on in the year.

This is how it stands: FORMS 3RA 3RL 3HB 3JM 3JJ OVERALL 17 9 8 9 8 POINTS SO FAR

CHIEFS, PIRATES OR SUNDOWNS

BY MATTHEW PERKINS.

As the football league kicks off two teams appear to be locked in a battle for the title of the Premiership. However far away from this battle another battle rages but not for a mere trophy, but for the chance to be the most celebrated team in South African football history.

The three teams Kaiser Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and the Mamelodi sundowns each have 17 South African National

Soccer League wins, and if one of them can win this season they will officially be the most decorated team in South African History.

So far neither team has managed to gain complete superiority. Kaiser Chiefs are currently top with Orlando pirates only a point behind. At their recent derby an early goal looked to put Pirates at the top, but a late header kept Chiefs in their dominant position. The Mamelodi sundowns however had three straight losses put them in the bottom half. Fans spirits were raised when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic but were crushed when Bloemfontein came back for revenge in the Vodacom cup and won a 2-1 win, taking advantage of a poor defensive display from the Sundowns defence. However with much of the season left will they be able to bounce back and take the league by storm?

GEMINID METEOR SHOWER PUTS AND A SPECTACULAR SPACE SHOW

BY ANDREW SHORTALL.

The Annual Geminid Meteor shower was seen by a very few keen star gazers who put up with the temperatures going down to -10 degrees Celsius and they also struggled to see the streaks flying through the night sky because of the heavy cloud cover. This phenomenon happens every year because the earth crosses the path of the meteor and hence causes the skylights to flash up every year. This year’s watchers were rewarded for their patience by seeing up to 50 flashes in the sky every hour as the pieces of rock debris burned up in the earth’s atmosphere. If you wanted to see the Meteor Shower this year you would have staying up to 9-10pm local time and putting up with the freezing temperatures which certainly would have taken its toll.

MORE PEOPLE GETTING MARRIED IN 12/12/12

BY HARRY ZHOU

12/12/12 is the last repeating date of the century, and many people believe it holds a magical meaning. On this day there were dozens of couples getting married and on that day 7,500 brides got hitched in America, all looking for good fortune and a good future. In Western China i.e. Hong Kong there were also over one thousand weddings that took place in one day! It was globally estimated that there were ten times as many couples married compared to the same date last year. Michelle Hall organiser at the legendary UK marriage destination Gretna Green’s blacksmith shop in Dumfries, said ‘Brides started calling us about two years ago asking us to reserve this date. We are now at full capacity for weddings on that day and the anvil will be busy from 9am in the morning to 6.30pm in the evening’ This shows how people would like to get married in that day.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY RAISES MONEY FOR CHILDREN

BY ERIKA IGNATAVICIUTE.

THE PRIME MINISTER'S WIFE, SAMANTHA CAMERON, HAS LAUNCHED A CHARITY CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN.

Traditional Christmas woolly jumpers are the kind of thing your granny would normally get you as a present. We can all agree on that one. But think again, because they are back in fashion, peeps! All those colourful pictures and patterns on knitted jumpers are no longer uncool.

“Save the Children”, a charity, are calling on us to wear Christmas jumpers on December 14th to show respect and spread the Christmas spirit to all around us. It has also been set up by the Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron.

Do you have an amazing jumper with Rudolf, Santa, or some elves on it?

If you don’t, you can buy some or someone from your family could knit you one for you...

So why don’t you show off your best (or worst) Christmas jumper, and post a picture on Newsround, at www.newsroundpix@.co.uk.

It is for a laugh, but most importantly, for a good cause.

POPE TWEETS FOR FIRST TIME

ZAK SOUTTER

Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet on the 12th of December in 8 different languages. His user name, ‘pontifex’ translates to ‘the builder of bridges’. It read "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."

The popular social networking site has 500 million users worldwide and the Pope already had over a million before his first tweet! He has subsequently tweeted 6 more times responding to questions from Catholics from all over the world with the aim to “reach out to everyone". The Leader of the Catholic Church has been subjected to hate and also has been asked questions such as “Who is your favourite character from Father Ted?” He has not tweeted since.

ALISTAIR COOK SMASHES CENTURY RECORD

ROBERT WAY

Alistair Cook has passed Geoffrey Boycott’s record of 23 test centuries during the second test of England’s match against India. England took the test by 10 wickets with Cook ending on 190 with a strange run out to stop him getting a deserved double century. Cook has currently got 7,038 runs from 179 innings with 21 centuries to give you an idea of how good the England captain is Len Hutton got throughout his career on 6,971 from 138 innings with 19 centuries, Cook is only 27. Cook tried to carry on his current form in the 3rd test, however; he got out for one; a dubious decision possibly! England ended on 330 with Kevin Pietersen, currently on 22 centuries is hungry to chase down Cooks record, getting 73 along with Joseph Root who also got 73. India are currently on 87/4 with Verinder Sehwag getting a duck.

CARA’S APPEAL TO RESCUE SYRIAN ACADEMICS

BY ROSE LINDLEY

CARA (Council for Assisting Refugee Academics) has given an urgent appeal to try to rescue several academics from Syria. Stephen Wordsworth, CARA Executive Director, says

“With bloody violence raging across Syria, academics are once again being targeted. We must act now to help them.”

There has been extreme conflict in Syria since the death of President Gaddafi. Michele Moor, a volunteer at CARA, is helping a man and his family to escape from Syria. Michele is keeping in touch with him and he has told her several appalling things about his situation; everyday he hears bombs and shells near his house and many of his friends have been killed. He is trying to protect his family and feed them, as well as keeping hidden from the violence. Another Academic from Syria describes November 2012 as the

“… worst month ever… lots of killing, bombing, kidnapping, savage violence and a high level of tension between different Syrian factions… Three academics have already been murdered as they criticized the Assad regime.”

As you can imagine, trying to get someone who doesn’t speak your language very well out of a country with so much violence is a very hard task to pull off.

CARA desperately needs donations for them to save all of those people.

You can donate on their website.
