Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (1): 241–252. A new sponge fauna has been discovered in silty mudstone of the early Migneintian (late Tremadocian, Ordovician) of North Wales. The assemblage is dominated by reticulosan hexactinellids, including several species bearing parietal gaps; this feature is common among Cambrian hexactinellids, but is rare in Ordovician faunas. Of particular significance is Valospongia bufo sp. nov., representing the first record of the genus outside the Middle Cambrian of Utah, USA. A single specimen assigned to Hintzespongia? sp. is also described, and also represents the first occurrence outside the Laurentian Burgess Shale-type faunas. This fauna indicates that deeper-water hexactinellids from the Burgess Shale-type faunas survived in places into at least the Early Ordovician, in addition to the Cambrian-type protomonaxonid assemblage seen in the Fezouata Biota. Traditional views of these relationships are currently being challenged by molecular data, but the debate has so far made little use of recent palaeontological advances that provide an independent perspective on deep sponge evolution. This review summarises the available information, particularly where the fossil record reveals extinct character combinations that directly impinge on our understanding of high-level relationships and evolutionary origins. An evolutionary outline is proposed that includes the major early fossil groups, combining the fossil record with molecular phylogenetics. The key points are as follows. (1) Crown-group sponge classes are difficult to recognise in the fossil record, with the exception of demosponges, the origins of which are now becoming clear. (2) Hexactine spicules were present in the stem lineages of Hexactinellida, Demospongiae, Silicea and probably also Calcarea and Porifera; this spicule type is not diagnostic of hexactinellids in the fossil record. (3) Reticulosans form the stem lineage of Silicea, and probably also Porifera. (4) At least some early-branching groups possessed biminerallic spicules of silica (with axial filament) combined with an outer layer of calcite secreted within an organic sheath.

    First report of Crumillospongia (Demospongea) from the Cambrian of Europe (Murero biota, Spain) DIEGO C. GARCÍA-BELLIDO, MARÍA EUGENIA DIES ÁLVAREZ, JOSÉ ANTONIO GÁMEZ VINTANED, ELADIO LIÑÁN & RODOLFO GOZALO The demosponge genus Crumillospongia, originally described from the Burgess Shale (middle Cambrian of Canada), has only been cited from lower and middle Cambrian localities of North America and China. The taxon is now also de- scribed from uppermost lower Cambrian rocks of the Murero Lagerstätte (Zaragoza Province, NE Spain). Crumillospongia mureroensis sp. nov. is a small to medium sized sack-shaped to elongate demosponge characterized by the presence of densely packed pores of three sizes, considerably larger than those in any other species of the genus. Its rapid burial in a fine-grained sediment under anoxic conditions led to the formation of one of the earliest Cambrian Lagerst7tte. All the organisms of the biota were adapted to a life under dysaerobic conditions. It seems possible that the adaptations of many Cambrian organisms, which composed the trophic nucleus of the Sinsk Algal Lens palaeocommunity to low oxygen tensions allowed them to diversify in the earliest Palaeozoic, especially during the Cambrian. Nowadays these groups comprise only a negligible part of communities and usually survive in settings with low levels of competition. Nonetheless, the organization of the Algal Lens palaeocommunity was not simple, it consisted of diverse trophic guilds. The tiering among sessile filter-feeders was well developed with the upper tier at the 50 cm level. In terms of individuals, the community was dominated by sessile filter-feeders, vagrant detritophages, and diverse carnivores/scavengers. The same groups, but in slightly different order, comprised the bulk of the biovolume: vagrant epifaunal and nektobenthic carnivores/ scavengers, sessile filter-feeders, and vagrant detritophages.

The landscape is rural in character with scattered farmsteads and small villages. The zone includes Llyn Tegid (the largest natural lake in Wales), Llyn Celyn, Arenig Fawr and parts of the Aran Fawddwy. The main service centre for the area is the market town of Bala. Penllyn has strong traditions based on the Welsh language and culture.

    Hill Walking & Mountaineering in Snowdonia Introduction The craggy heights of Snowdonia are justly regarded as the finest mountain range south of the Scottish Highlands. There is a different appeal to Snowdonia than, within the picturesque hills of, say, Cumbria, where cosy woodland seems to nestle in every valley and each hillside seems neatly manicured. Snowdonia’s hillsides are often rock strewn with deep rugged cwms biting into the flank of virtually every mountainside, sometimes converging from two directions to form soaring ridges which lead to lofty peaks. The proximity of the sea ensures that a fine day affords wonderful views, equally divided between the ever- changing seas and the serried ranks of mountains fading away into the distance. Eryri is the correct Welsh version of the area the English call Snowdonia; Yr Wyddfa is similarly the correct name for the summit of Snowdon, although Snowdon is often used to demarcate the whole massif around the summit. The mountains of Snowdonia stretch nearly fifty miles from the northern heights of the Carneddau, looming darkly over Conwy Bay, to the southern fringes of the Cadair Idris massif, overlooking the tranquil estuary of the Afon Dyfi and Cardigan Bay. From the western end of the Nantlle Ridge to the eastern borders of the Aran range is around twenty- five miles. Within this area lie nine distinct mountain groups containing a wealth of mountain walking possibilities, while just outside the National Park, the Rivals sit astride the Lleyn Peninsula and the Berwyns roll upwards to the east of Bala. The traditional bases of Llanberis, Bethesda, Capel Curig, Betws y Coed and Beddgelert serve the northern hills and in the south Barmouth, Dinas Mawddwy, Dolgellau, Tywyn, Machynlleth and Bala provide good locations for accessing the mountains.

    A long walk to Berwick The Great Outdoors magazine, November 2016 I’d been a long time getting to Berwick: you could reckon it in hours, years or decades, depending where you started from. Hours: eight. That wasn’t bad for 23 miles from Wooler. Years: ten, since I’d set out from Land’s End with a vague plan, to walk 800 miles across England, a bit at a time. Decades: six and a bit. I never before had found the excuse to walk through Berwick-upon-Tweed, though I’d shot past it on the train often enough, and it seemed a nice sort of place to go to, with its border history, estuary location and recently-ended war with Russia. The vagueness of my plan to cross England was very much the point. That unholy trinity of work, family and finance meant that opportunities to get into the great outdoors from my London home were all too limited, essentially just one short break a year, everything else just local lowland walking. I’d got frustrated with cherry-picking different bits of the nation each year – the North Devon Coast one time, the Black Mountains another, say. I was the sort of guy who needed a plan, one that involved a nice B&B at the end of the day. I didn’t do spartan. And that plan, before England, was Wales, starting 2002. I’d walked Offa’s Dyke Path a few years before, and it came to me that finding and walking a different, wilder, hillier line across that grand little nation might be fun.
