  • Review of 2010/11 – Part 2 – Losing Their Way
Review of 2010/11 – Part 2 – Losing their way Leeds United’s return to the Championship had seen them exceed expectations, despite heavy defeats at home to Preston and Cardiff and an embarrassing 5-2 reverse at Barnsley. The sheen of beating table-topping QPR on 18 December had been dulled by losing two-goal leads against Leicester and Portsmouth, but as 2011 opened, Leeds were fourth in the table, level on 40 points with Cardiff and Swansea, with Rangers seven points clear of that pack. It was heady stuff after three years in the League One wilderness and supporters were hopeful of a real promotion push in the New Year. Andy O'Brien, pictured celebrating his goal against Hull City on 9 November, made his move to Elland Road permanent on New The positive mood was enhanced by the Year's Day announcement that Irish international centre-back Andy O’Brien, on loan from Bolton since 29 October, would make the move permanent. O’Brien, who represented himself in contract talks, commented: “The meeting with the chairman was something I will remember all my life. It was a bit like when I signed my first contract at Bradford with Geoffrey Richmond – that was entertaining as well. My Dad came in with me initially and he is a big bloke of around 20 stone. The chairman’s first words were, ‘We’ll sign the fat one instead.’ My Dad replied he had been on a diet for six weeks, to which the chairman said, ‘Well that isn't effing working, is it?’ Dad is quite quick-witted and said back, ‘Well I don’t know what your excuse is’.

  • Trevor Cherry
Wednesday 13 May 2020 GUERNSEY PRESS OBITUARY 23 OBITUARY Trevor Cherry by Advocate Footballer Trevor Raymond Ashton Cherry, pictured in 1981. (28247216) T IS WITH regret that I have learnt of the sad demise of my friend Trevor Cherry as a result of a massive heart attack. This makes it two former footballers who have died within a Ishort period of time. Trevor was in the same school year as myself and over the years we had become friends and only about six weeks ago my other half was with the denizens of the chairman’s suite at City in Madrid, of which Trevor was part, as a result of his friendship and business association with Mike Marshall (himself a former player). Trevor had been a regular visitor over the years to City and always had time to talk about his former colleagues at Elland Road. Indeed, I had hoped many years ago during the second coming of Malcolm Allison to persuade him to join City to give the defence more stability. Before going into detail I must say that he was a very self-effacing and modest man, unlike most footballers. There will be many tributes to Trevor but when Bradford City went into administration in the early 1980s Stafford Higginbottom, later chairman, said to me that unlike many managers he had a brain (and not just in his feet) and was very sensiblel. Prophetic words, it proved. Trevor was born in Huddersfield and was always very proud of the town (and had heard of the world-famous Choral Society) and eventually forced his way into the first team.

Event Detection using Wikipedia Eirik Emanuelsen Martin Rudi Holaker Master of Science in Computer Science Submission date: June 2013 Supervisor: Kjetil Nørvåg, IDI Norwegian University of Science and Technology Department of Computer and Information Science Task Description Analysing huge text based corpora has been a popular field for research, and recently Wikipedia has become a popular corpus to study. This project aims to make a scalable system with web interface for exploring the Wikipedia page view statistics combined with page edit statistics and try to detect popularity spikes. The system can be extended with other features, for example exploring relations and grouping of entities. I II Preface This is the final thesis of our Master’s degree from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Computer and Information Science. It has been prepared over a period of 20 weeks during the spring of 2013. This thesis is within the field of Data and Information Management, and presents a system ca- pable of performing event detection on Wikipedia. We are very grateful to our two academic supervisors; Professor Kjetil Nørvåg (NTNU) and Associate Professor Krisztian Balog (University in Stavanger). During the development of the thesis you have provided guidance that has been invaluable for the final result. Thank you very much for your support, advisory and involvement in the process. Martin Rudi Holaker and Eirik Emanuelsen Trondheim, June 2013 III IV Abstract The amount of information on the web is ever growing, and analysing and making sense of this is difficult without specialised tools. The concept of Big Data is the field of processing and storing these enormous quantities of data.
