Music in The Heart of Manila: Quiapo from the Colonial Period to Contemporary Times: Tradition, Change, Continuity Ma. Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre A brief history of Quiapo Quiapo is a key district of Manila, having as its boundaries the winding Pasig River and the districts of Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and Sampaloc. Its name comes from a floating water lily specie called kiyapo (Pistia stratiotes), with thick, light-green leaves, similar to a tiny, open cabbage. Pre-1800 maps of Manila show Quiapo as originally a cluster of islands with swampy lands and shallow waters (Andrade 2006, 40 in Zialcita), the perfect breeding place for the plant that gave its name to the district. Quiapo’s recorded history began in 1578 with the arrival of the Franciscans who established their main missionary headquarters in nearby Sta. Ana (Andrade 42), taking Quiapo, then a poor fishing village, into its sheepfold. They founded Quiapo Church and declared its parish as that of St. John the Baptist. The Jesuits arrived in 1581, and the discalced Augustinians in 1622 founded a chapel in honor of San Sebastian, at the site where the present Gothic-style basilica now stands. At about this time there were around 30,000 Chinese living in Manila and its surrounding areas, but the number swiftly increased due to the galleon trade, which brought in Mexican currency in exchange for Chinese silk and other products (Wickberg 1965). The Chinese, noted for their business acumen, had begun to settle in the district when Manila’s business center shifted there in the early 1900s (originally from the Parian/Chinese ghetto beside Intramuros in the 1500s, to Binondo in the 1850s, to Sta.Cruz at the turn of the century). -

Matienzo Abstract: In 1521, the Spanish conquistadores brought Christian faith to the Philippine islands. Through centuries, this faith is infused with the indigenous culture of the people paving a way to what is known today as “Filipino popular devotion.” One of the most famous among its rituals is the annual Traslación devotion in honor of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila. In recent decades, there has been a vast measure of literature on this religious phenomenon. However, most of them are either written by social scientists or religious experts and very seldom has it been explored in a philosophical manner. This paper aims to reflect on the religious experience of the Black Nazarene popular devotion in order to provide a philosophical appreciation of this unique Filipino faith, in particular, and to provide an avenue towards a deeper understanding indigenous culture and Christian faith, in general. In meeting this aim, the study invokes Søren Kierkegaard’s existentialism and its discussion on “faith” illustrated in two of his renowned works Fear and Trembling and Concluding Unscientific Postscript. Festin, SVD Christ the King Mission Seminary-Quezon City Preliminary Remarks: The Ethical Question of Extra-Judicial Killing(s) In a stimulating essay entitled “Why President Duterte Could be Correct [sic],” Bro. Romualdo Abulad, SVD expatiates on one burning political and moral issue currently raging in contemporary Philippine history.1 The main burden of Abulad’s short treatise revolves around the intriguing philosophical-ethical question whether the specter of extra-judicial killings (hereafter EJKs) allegedly being perpetrated by Duterte’s government in its brutal campaign on illegal drugs can be morally justified or philosophically defended. Abulad—a star professor who teaches philosophy at Christ the King Mission Seminary and the University of Sto. Tomás (UST)—is arguably styled as “the most prominent Kantian scholar” in this unhappy land of ours.2 Indeed, his philosophical thoughts and locutions are unquestionably carved from the frozen cube of Kantianism. For Abulad, Immanuel Kant is to philosophy what Magnus Carlsen is to chess—the supreme virtuoso of metaphysical lucubration, the finest connoisseur of what Plato once wistfully described as that “dear delight,” the feast of the gods (philosophy). The fascination of Abulad’s treatise chiefly owes itself to the uncanny way in which he unfolds his thesis and builds up his arguments. He does not bare the body of his unspoken assumptions in a direct and pointed manner. (The title of his essay which is framed as a rhetorical question bears out this 62 R. FESTIN ________________________________________________________________________________ observation.) Nor does he deploy the conventional weapons of persuasion in advancing his ideas and insights. -

Ready, but there are different fonts Duterte Contra Deus Catholicism arrived in the Philippines in 1520 with Fernáo de Magãlhaes/Magellan. Almost 500 years later, the Church that helped to overthrow Ferdinand Marcos now faces two major challenges: how to fight another dictator and maintain the glory of the past in a society that is “more evangelized than catechized”? Patricia Fox, Regional Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sião Congregation, dedicated twenty- seven of her 72 years to the defense of the poor and oppressed in the Philippines. Accused of "involvement in illegal political activities", she was arrested on 16 April. On 3 November, she was expelled from the country, where she will not be able to return as a missionary. Upon arriving in Melbourne, after losing a tough legal battle, the Australian nun denounced President Rodrigo Duterte's “reign of tyranny”. “They have no right to criticize me”, said Duterte, who had ordered the deportation of Patricia Fox. He was indignant that she should have joined in a protest against the murder of farmers, but above all because she participated in an investigation of the extrajudicial executions he had ordered when he was Mayor of Davao, on the Island of Mindanao, in the south. Patricia Fox’s ordeal, and that of other members of the Catholic Church (three priests were shot in April and June of 2018, and in December 2017), shows the risk that one of the most influential institutions in the Philippines has had to face since Duterte won the elections in May 2016 to become Head of State, retaining a popularity of almost 80% despite the thousands of deaths. -

THE SIPADAN PEACE MISSION An Excerpt from the book, Miracles in Moroland: A Journey of Faith, Love and Courage ( The Inside Story of the Sipadan Hostage Crisis) authored by Sam Smith, published on January 30, 2015 Evangelist Wilde E. Almeda and the JMCIM became involved with the actors of the second major Abu Sayyaf attack on innocents involving Commander Robot’s Sulu faction and the Sipadan hostages. During this crisis, the beloved Pastor Wilde Almeda and the Jesus Miracle Crusade became “house-hold names” when he and his twelve Prayer Warriors went into the dangerous interior of the mountainous region of Jolo Island on a mission of peace to minister to the Moro terrorists and their 21 captives. The list of hostages continued to grow to as many as 38 prisoners as the Abu Sayyaf, motivated by greed and fame, snatched up more and more people who dared to enter the territory controlled by the dreadful Moro insurgents. There have been many misconceptions about Evangelist Wilde Almeda’s Sipadan Peace Mission. The beloved Evangelist was mocked and ridiculed by the media. Some journalists even called him a “firebrand” during the time he spent with the Abu Sayyaf. His life and safety were automatically written off by many Filipino politicians and some elected officials even remarked that if he was “beheaded” then he got what he deserved because he should have calculated the risks. The beloved Evangelist and his Prayer Warriors were even abandoned by many ministers belonging to other Christian congregations. These preachers questioned the Evangelist’s wisdom and judgment from their pulpits during their Sunday sermons. -
