Reception Studies: the Cultural Mobility of Classics Reception Studies: The Cultural Mobility of Classics Emily Greenwood Abstract: In spite of connotations of classics and the classical as an established tradition based around a Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/daed/article-pdf/145/2/41/1830910/daed_a_00374.pdf by guest on 02 October 2021 stable canon, Greek and Roman classical antiquity has never been a fixed object of study. It has changed as our knowledge of ancient Greece and Rome has grown and shifted, and as a function of history, intel- lectual movements, and taste. Classicists have turned to classical reception studies in an attempt to chart some of the different encounters that various historical audiences have had with Greek and Roman clas- sics, and this wave of research poses interdisciplinary questions about the relation of Greek and Roman classics to world literatures and cultures. The emphasis on classical reception studies offers fresh ways of thinking about the cultural mobility of the classics without appealing to discredited, old-fashioned notions of “timeless importance” or “universal value.” This debate is explored here via a Malawian reception of Sophocles’s Antigone. By its very name, the term classics proclaims that a select body of works from antiquity is perpetually new. Here I am thinking less of Ezra Pound’s dictum in ABC of Reading that “literature is news that stays new,” and instead of a remark made by Plutarch, a polymath from Boeotia in central Greece and a sub- ject of the Roman empire.1 In his Life of Pericles, writ- ten early in the second century ce, Plutarch writes admiringly of the architecture of the buildings on the Athenian Acropolis, built in the third quarter of the fifth centurybce . The published English and Italian translations spoil the title’s symbolism by reinserting the missing word Classical.) Das Klassische was a problem indeed, and Jaeger’s conference aimed at making classics a classical discipline again, one firmly rooted in classical and humanistic values true for all time, as against its being a compilation of dry historical data. We have a good idea of what the conference was about because Jaeger published its proceedings a year later.2 But what went on behind the scenes? Luckily, in the days before tape recorders there was Alfred Körte, who offers an in- valuable first-hand account of what he saw and heard: “A number of speakers in the discussion at Naumburg sharply disputed the claim that Aeschylus was a classical author of the first rank (ein Klassiker). As the discussion went on, it turned out that actually none of the first-class luminaries of world literature had any rightful claim to the label classical, or at most they had only a qualified claim to it—neither Homer nor Aeschylus nor Shakespeare nor even the young Goethe.

Neo-classical literature though lasted for a short time compared with the movement which was between Renaissance and Romantic period, its influence in English literature is crystal clear. The Satire is the most important contribution of neoclassicism. The researchers recommended that it is better to teach literary movements in an integrated way. INTRODUCTION1 KIRSTEN DAY The past thirty years have seen a growing scholarly interest in examin- ing films with a classical focus, a movement more or less initiated by Jon Solomon’s 1978 study The Ancient World in the Cinema. This trend gained momentum in the 1990s with the publication of Martin Winkler’s Classics and Cinema (1991) and Maria Wyke’s Projecting the Past (1997). Since then, a steady stream of books and articles on classics in the cinema has appeared, along with an increasing number of panels on this topic at aca- demic conferences.2 Classical themes have enjoyed a corresponding revival of popularity at the box office, touched off by the success of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator in 2000.     What Does A Classic Do? Tapping the Powers of a Comparative Phenomenology of the Classic/al WIEBKE DENECKE 1. Variations on a Classical European Question “What is a Classic?” This question sounds familiar. We might not remember right away what people have said about it, but it is a question that already implies answers. Not any particular one, but a clearly defined arena animated by forces engaged in Titan Wars of cosmic proportions: timeless authority versus historical coincidence or oblivion; the sanctioned canon versus the mere archive; universal relevance versus local parochialism; sanctioned school book text versus ephemeral entertainment tome and so forth. Unlike other big, unanswerable academic questions like “what is philosophy?,” the answer calls for revelations about personal tastes and values, confessions of our innermost cherished convictions. And readers would expect an author with gravitas, of a certain age and with a certain life experience, to take on this question. An authoritative author who can equal the authoritativeness of the subject matter. The question is archetypal and highly personal, calling for the autobiographical. This is at least what three influential grapplings with the question that span the past one-and-a-half centuries have in common. All respondents were literary men of weight at the time, reaching out publicly on this important issue to their contemporaries. The French literary critic, scholar, and writer Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve was in his mid-forties when he published “Qu’est-ce qu’un classique?” in a newspaper column in October of 1850 and was a well-published poet and critic, who had just published his masterly study of the famed Cistercian abbey Port- Royal and its role in the intellectual and religious life of 17th century France.
