For the first time the carabid fauna of the area of Cape Emine (the middle of the Bulgarian Black sea coast) was studied. Over the period 2010 – 2012 adult carabid beetles were collected. Investigations were performed at 13 sampling sites and pitfall traps were used. During the study a total of 12618 specimens were captured. They belonged to 134 species, classified into 46 genera, 18 tribes, and 3 subfamilies. Dyschirius rufipes Dejean, 1825 and Laemostenus janthinus (Duftschmid, 1812) were reported as new species for the carabid fauna of Bulgaria. Three species were new for the fauna of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Fifty-four species were defined as new for the area of Cape Emine. Two endemics were found: Pterostichus merkli Frivaldszky, 1879 (Bulgarian endemic) and Cychrus semigranosus balcanicus Hopffgarten, 1881 (Balkan endemic). Species of ground beetles were characterized and classified according to their zoogeographical belonging, degree of endemism and rarity, habitat and humidity preferences; the life forms they refer to were determined. -

Romagna, 51: 95-125 (giugno 2020) ISSN 1123-6787 Ilvio Bendazzi 10 anni di ricerche entomologiche in giardino (Insecta) Abstract [Ten years of entomological research in a garden] A list of the insects found in a home-garden during ten years. The garden, of about 850 sq meters, including also a small pond, is close to a house on the outskirts of a village in Romagna lowland. Despite several negative factors due to the human presence, the biodiversity is surprisingly rich. The list includes 566 species of insects, 262 belonging to the Order Lepidoptera, 187 to Coleoptera and 117 to other Orders. These species only represent material identified at least at Genus level, but the collected material includes also many insects not identified at such level, that do not appear on the list. Furthermore many species probably escaped the research because they were neither manually collected nor attracted by light-traps. So it is deemed that the actual over-all insect biodiversity of the garden includes at least some hundreds more additional species. No previous records from Romagna were known of the tortricid Cochylis millierana Peyerimhoff = sannitica Trematerra, and the zopherid Synchita mediolanensis A. & G.B. Villa . The caddis-fly Hydropsyche guttata Pictet is recorded for the first time south of the Po river. The dermestid beetle Paranovelsis aequalis Sharp is new to Italy. Material was pitfall trapped in 2010 and 2011 on twelve sites of the agricultural landscape in the Prešov town and its near vicinity, Eastern Slovakia. A total of 14,763 ground beetle individuals were entrapped. Material collection resulted into 92 Carabidae species, with the following six species dominating: Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Pseudoophonus rufipes, Brachinus crepitans, Anchomenus dorsalis and Poecilus versicolor. Studied habitats differed significantly in the number of entrapped individuals, activity abundance as well as representation of the carabids according to their habitat preferences and ability to fly. However, no significant distinction was observed in the diversity, evenness neither dominance. -

In this paper we investigated the influence of beech forest management history [i.e. over-mature coppices (OC) and coppices in conversion to high forests (CCHF)], climatic, topographic and microhabitat characteristics on ground beetle diversity (measured as total relative abundance, species richness, Shannon diversity and abundance of the endangered endemic species Carabus olympiae) in northern Italy. The diversity of forest specialist carabids was higher in OC and in forest stands characterized by a higher mean temperature and lower relative humidity. In questa sperimentazione, per svariati anni, sono stati seguiti protocolli di coltivazione controllati e, fatto interessante, i terreni a confronto sono contigui, in modo da minimizzare l’influenza di ubicazioni diverse, come spesso avviene in analoghi lavori. -

Bulletin 14 of the European Dry Grassland Group Introduction The spring has come at last. Soon, all European naturalists will be very busy with their fieldwork. Before this happens, however, we invite you to read this Bulletin issue, which presents several interesting contributions and news on the numerous EDGG activities. The number of EDGG members exceeded 800 last month. Soon, the key EDGG events will take place - the EDGG research expedition to Sicily (Italy) and the European Dry Grassland Meeting in Prespa (Greece). You can find the most topical information about their preparation on the following pages. You can learn about the development of four prepared special issues focussing on grasslands. You can also learn which grasslands belong to the biodiversity hotspots at small scales. Besides that, you can find here information on the upcoming meetings and events, three book reviews and numerous smaller announcements from our members. Maybe you will notice that in this issue we have used some new graphical elements. We hope you like the changes! To make this and the future Bulletins more user-friendly, we have also adopted some structural changes and developed a fixed sequence of sections. The longer contributions (reports and research articles) in the central part of the Bulletin will have the structure of normal scientific papers so that they could easily be printed, posted and shared as separate items. Selected representatives of Cucujoidea, Cleroidea, Tenebrionoidea, Chrysomelidae, and Lymexylidae were examined. External and internal head structures of larvae ofSphindus americanus and Ericmodes spp. are described in detail. The data were analyzed cladistically. A sister group relationship between Sphindidae and Protocucujidae is suggested by the vertical position of the labrum. The monophyly of Cucujiformia is supported by the reduced dorsal and anterior tentorial arms, fusion of galea and lacinia, and the presence of tube-like salivary glands. Absence of M. tentoriopraementalis inferior and presence of a short prepharyngeal tube are potential synapomorphies of Cleroidea, Cucujoidea and Tenebrionoidea. The monophyly of Cleroidea and Cucujoidea is suggested by the unusual attachment of the M. tentoriostipitalis to the ventral side of the posterior hypopharynx. Cucujoidea are paraphyletic. The families Endomychidae, Coccinellidae and Nitidulidae are more closely related to the monophyletic Cleroidea, than to other cucujoid groups. Separation of the posterior tentorial arms from the tentorial bridge and presence of a maxillolabial complex are synapomorphic features of Cleroidea and these cucujoid families. For a reliable reconstruction of cucujoid interrelation ships, further characters and taxa need to be studied. INTRODUCTION for a reconstruction of the phylogeny of the cucujoid, Sphindidae and Protocucujidae are two small families tenebrionoid and cleroid families. -

Monitoring Populacij Izbranih Ciljnih Vrst Hroščev (Prvo Delno Poročilo)
1. DROBNOVRATNIK (Leptodirus hochenwartii) Ob odkritju notranjih delov Postojnske jame je leta 1831 jamski vodnik in pomožni svetilničar Luka Čeč na gori Kalvariji našel hroščka prav čudne oblike. Podaril ga je grofu Franzu von Hochenwartu ta pa ga je v opis predal ljubljanskemu naravoslovcu Ferdinandu Schmidtu. Schmidt je v hroščku prepoznal novo in na jamsko okolje povsem prilagojeno žival in ga leta 1832 opisal pod znanstvenim imenom Leptodirus Hochenwartii. Odkritje in opis jamskega hrošča drobnovratnika velja za prvi opis jamske živali, takoj za opisom človeške ribice, ki pa takrat še ni bila prepoznana kot jamska žival in ima zato tudi velik kulturno znanstveni pomen. Odkritje drobnovratnika je v znanstvenih krogih zbudilo veliko zanimanje za življenje v podzemlju in odkritja ter opisi novih jamskih živali so se kasneje kar hitro vrstila. Najprej na Kranjskem potem pa tudi po drugih območjih krasa je bilo kasneje opisanih še veliko vrst jamskih hroščev (POLAK 2005). Poleg tipske lokalitete – Postojnske jame, so naravoslovci kasneje našli drobnovratnika tudi v drugih notranjskih jamah. Leta 1856 je Victor Motschulsky opisal novo vrsto Leptodirus schmidti iz Velike jame pri Trebnjem na Dolenjskem, ki pa je bila kasneje preimenovana v podvrsto (JEANNEL 1924). Primerke iz jame Grota Noe pri Trstu v Italiji je leta 1905 opisal Josef Müller kot podvrsto Leptodirus hochenwarti reticulatus. V. Stiller je leta 1911 v jami Ledenici pri Lokvah v Gorskem Kotarju na Hrvaškem našel primerke te vrste, ki jih je Egon Pretner leta 1955 opisal pod imenom Leptodirus hochenwarti croaticus. Leta 1926 je G. (J) Müller primerke iz Čičarije na Hrvaškem opisal pod imenom Leptodirus hochenwarti reticulatus var.
