Streb; asistente editorial: Valeria Dowding <[email protected]> The Populist Economic Policy Paradigm: Early Peronism as an Archetype Emilio Ocampo1 Abstract Before Hugo Chavez burst into the political scene in Venezuela, Argentina’s Juan Perón (1895- 1974) was considered the quintessential Latin American populist leader. He ruled Argentina from mid 1943 until September 1955 and between 1973 and 1974 and his political party has been in power two thirds of the time since the reestablishment of democracy in 1983. Perón’s economic policies between 1946 and 1949 are also considered archetypical. The Peronist economic policy paradigm (PEPP) emphasized income redistribution and a fiscally induced expansion of aggregate demand at the expense of productivity and allocative efficiency. Although the ideological roots of Peronism can be directly traced back to Fascism, when it came to his economic policies, Perón claimed to have been inspired by FDR’s New Deal and Keynes’s General Theory. However, in mosts respects, in their early stage, Peronist economic policies resemble more those proposed by Sir Oswald Mosley (1896-1980) in 1930. This paper describes the PEPP, its implementation and results and evaluates several hypothesis regarding its intellectual roots. Keywords: Peronism, Fascism, Economic Policy, Argentina. Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy, vol. 15, no. 1, 2019 BEFORE HEGEL: SCHILLER, NOVALIS, AND THE CONCEPT OF AUFHEBUNG Hammam Aldouri ABSTRACT: Philosophical explorations of the concept of Aufhebung (sublation, supersession) immediately prior to its formulation in Hegel’s work have remained relatively absent within the context of both Hegel scholarship and German Idealism studies. Hegel is often simply represented as the originator of the concept and the latter is understood almost exclusively within his oeuvre. This essay addresses this lack by offering an exposition of the notion as it unfolds in two works from 1795-1796: Friedrich Schiller’s Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man and Novalis’ Fichte Studies. In these works, we find distinctive examinations of Aufhebung understood as the name of a process in which a subject comprehends itself in relation to its own processual development. My guiding premise is that without an adequate comprehension of the way in which Aufhebung is constructed and comprehended in the last years of the eighteenth century, we cannot establish the vantage point from which to reconstruct Hegel’s early conception of the notion, a conception which begins to emerge in his earliest Frankfurt writings in 1797, as a contribution to the constellation of post-Kantian conceptions. Council communism or councilism? - The period of transition A book review by Fredo Corvo Book review of Philippe Bourrinet “The Dutch and German Communist Left (1900-68); ‘Neither Lenin nor Trotsky nor Stalin!”, ‘All workers must think for themselves!’”, Leiden/Boston (Brill) ISBN 978-90-04-26977-4. This book in fact is based on a master thesis in French language, defended at the Sorbonne University Paris, 1988. Since then editions in several languages appeared, with or without permission of the author, or of the International Communist Current, who claims to be its ‘collective author’. Therefor it is unfortunately that this new edition by Brill doesn’t explain the differences with the master thesis. For readers that know the Porcupine Press English language edition, I found two additions. A fragment preceding chapter 1, on Religion, Capitalism and colonial Empire: From the ‘Golden Age’ to the Decline, gives a short overview of the history of the Netherlands before industrialization. A text added to chapter 11, International Council-Communists up to the 1970s adds interesting information of studies published since 1987, which can be found in the bibliography. On the other hand, some of the more recent works are missing here as well as in the 58 pages long section ‘Further reading’: for example, Gerber’s and Boekelman's biographies of Anton Pannekoek. No doubt this study is impressive for many reasons, of which its international scope and its internationalist approach are the most important. No coincidence the author identifies with the Communist left, consisting mainly of the German-Dutch left and the Italian left, having published several studies on the latter as well. -

O más específicamente ¿Qué relación guarda América Latina con la primera Escuela de Frankfurt? Das Institut für Sozialforschung konnte an keiner anderen deutschen Universität entstehen als an der in Frankfurt am Main. Landesuniversität wie alle weiteren, war deren Gründung 1914 vom zuständigen Landesherren, dem preußischen König Wilhelm II., genehmigt worden, aber anders als alle anderen ohne das Plazet des für die Finanzierung zuständigen Landtages. Denn dessen kompakte konservative Mehrheit mißbilligte die Hochschulpläne der liberalen Wirt- schaftsstadt und einiger ihrer wohlhabenden Unternehmer- und Bankiersfamilien, in der von den Preußen 1866 annektierten ehemaligen freien Reichsstadt eine freie "Volksuniversität" zu gründen anstatt einer Hochschule nach preußischer Schablone. Denn die Stadt stand im Ver- dacht jüdisch-demokratischer Tendenzen. Landesmittel waren also nicht zu erwarten. Daher Ludwig von Friedeburg: Die Geschichte des Instituts für Sozialforschung 2 boten allein private Stiftungsgelder im Verein mit dem Engagement der Stadt einen Weg und zugleich die Gewähr für das liberale Konzept der neuen Hochschule. Stadt und Stifter verzichteten bewußt auf die theologischen Fakultäten, schufen statt dessen eine eigene naturwissenschaftliche und, erstmals in Deutschland, eine Wirtschafts- und Sozi- alwissenschaftliche Fakultät. In ihr wirkte die am Anfang des Jahrhunderts gegründete Aka- demie für Sozial- und Handelswissenschaften fort, für die 1907 von der Jügelstiftung ein re- präsentatives Gebäude errichtet worden war, das zum Zentrum der im Oktober 1914 eröffne- ten Universität wurde. -

Libertarian Socialism Politics in Black and Red Editors: Alex Prichard, Ruth Kinna, Saku Pinta, and David Berry The history of anarchist-Marxist relations is usually told as a history of faction- alism and division. These essays, based on original research and written espe- cially for this collection, reveal some of the enduring sores in the revolutionary socialist movement in order to explore the important, too often neglected left- libertarian currents that have thrived in revolutionary socialist movements. The Specter of Nihilism: On Hegel on Buddhism ∗ Mario D’Amato and Robert T. Moore Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) is renowned as one of the most complex and comprehensive modern philosophers. The goal of his philosophical system is nothing less than to explain the interrelationships among all the multifarious aspects of the whole of reality, including the entire array of historical religions. But Hegel’s dialectical method has been criticized as being speculative and idealistic, and his interpretation of religion has been written off by some as an overly ambitious attempt to force the historical religions into the confines of a predetermined hierarchical scheme. As for his perspective on Buddhism, Hegel interprets it as a form of nihilism, stating that for Buddhism, “the ultimate or highest [reality] is…nothing or not- being” and the “state of negation is the highest state: one must immerse oneself in this nothing, in the eternal tranquillity of the nothing generally” (LPR 253).1 Hegel’s interpretation of Buddhism has of course been appropriately criticized in recent scholarship, most ably by Roger-Pol Droit in his work The Cult of Nothingness: The Philosophers and the Buddha (2003). -

The theory of the psychological materialism or dialectics of psychology is what I call general psychology” (Vygotsky, 1997, p. 330). “It is dialectics that has given psychology its stability and its meaning … Through dialectics psychology is able to be at once a natural science and a human science …. dialectics has enabled psychology to comprehend the organism and its environment, in constant interaction, as a single, unified whole” (Wallon, 1951, p. 34). Abstract In this paper we argue that Vygotsky’s psychological research paradigm is a research epistemology, methodology, and ontology of theory and practice that attempts to build a psychology grounded within the social historical and cultural setting in which he/she evolved. Vygotsky’s whole enterprise was to establish a concrete human psychology committed to investigate how human nature changes, conceiving human development not just as quantitative, cumulative and linear, but also as qualitative, transformative change. In this outlook, contradiction leads to new contradictions, not necessarily “equilibrium”. The dialectical concepts of contradiction, development and transformation were fundamental to Vygotsky’s psychology. -

An alternative schema would reverse this relationship by assert- ing the prefigurative over the Jacobin. For the party is essentially an instrumental agency preoccupied with concrete political tasks rather than the cultural objectives of changing everyday life and abolishing the capitalist division of labor; it tends naturally to be an agency of domination rather than of prefiguration. Since emancipa- tory goals can be fully carried out only through locs1 structures, it is these organs — rather than the party-state — that must shape the revolutionary process. Centralised structures would not be super- imposed upon mass struggles, but would emerge out of these strug- gles as coordinating mechanisms. Berlin: Berenberg Verlag. 205 pp. ISBN 978-3-946334-16-3, Price: € 24,00 The so-called Frankfurt School is one of the most studied groups of intellectuals-cum-schol- ars of the 20th century. After Martin Jay’s Ph.D. thesis (1973) and Rolf Wiggershaus’ volu- minous monograph (1986/1994), one would have thought that there was nothing left to be uncovered. But the publications on the School did not come to a stop, and some latecomers did have to say something new about the particular aspects of the group under the leadership of Max Horkheimer (Dahms 1994; Faber & Ziege 2007; Faber & Ziege 2008; Steinert 2007; Boll & Gross 2009; Ziege 2009; Wheatland 2009; Lichtblau & Herrschaft 2010). In all stud- ies on the history of the “Institute,” one name regularly showed up without being portrayed in depth: Felix Weil. The German ethnologist, documentary filmmaker, and author Jeanette Erazo Heufelder, unknown in the history of the social sciences until now, offers a fascinating look behind the walls of the Institute and into the behavior of its members in this concise biographical study on Weil. Felix Weil was born in 1898, eight years after his father Hermann arrived in Buenos Aires as an employee of a Dutch merchant starting the trade of grain from South America to Europe. Shortly before Felix was born, his father quit his job and founded together with two of his brothers a new firm “Gebrüder Weill und Partner” (Weill Brothers & Co.), which was listed as “Hermanos Weil y Cía” in Argentinian documents.
