EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF SINOLOGICAL LIBRARIANS (EASL)

Minutes of the Thirty-third Annual Conference Leiden, 4-6 September 2013

The thirty-third EASL conference was hosted by East Asian Library, , Leiden, the from 4 to 6 September 2013. The meetings were chaired by Maja Fuchs.

During the conference, two library visits, one presentation and a reception were organised by the local host. The reception was held at the conference venue on Wednesday evening. On Thursday afternoon there were two visits, one to the Leiden University Library where members were shown the Van Gulik collection and the other to the Bibliotheca Thysiana where they were given a presentation of the Library and its history. The farewell dinner took place on Friday evening at the City Hall Restaurant.

ACTA

1. Chairman’s address and the welcome speech by the host institution

Maja Fuchs opened the conference by thanking the local host for organising the conference, followed by a welcome speech by Maghiel van Crevel (Professor of Chinese literature and Academic Director of LIAS).

Maja Fuchs then extended her warm welcome to all the participants and especially to the new members who joined the conference for the first time.

2. Minutes of the previous EASL conference and member reports

The minutes of the 32nd EASL conference were approved.

3. Treasurer’s report

Anne Labitzky-Wagner presented her Treasurer’s report. There was an increase of €4.72 in the form of interest for 2012. As German banks calculate interests for the entire fiscal year – 1st January 1st to 31st December, the interests that have been accumulated in 2013 will be shown in next year’s report. The total balance is €1,883,98.

It was decided that Soline Lau-Suchet will be refunded for the money missing for last years farewell dinner.

6.1. EASL webpage

The EASL webpage will update it’s membership directory with the help from it’s members and from EACS newly updated membership registry. Other minor changes was also discussed.

The new revision of the ISO standard for the romanization of Chinese was much discussed.

6.2. Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA)

PDA and other solutions that can be used to limit or enhance the way in which librarians shape a library’s collection in the long perspective were lively debated.

6.3. Common European OPAC entry for Chinese resources

Matthias Kaun welcomes all libraries with Asian studies related materials to join CrossAsia MetaSearch. http://crossasia.org/en/search.html

7. Elections

The meeting accepted that Maja Fuchs and Anne Labitzky-Wagner would continue as Chairwoman and Treasurer. Due to an extended workload, Erik Svanström had to give up the post as Secretary, he was warmly thanked for his excellent contributions during his active time by the group and the Chairwoman. He will continue working on the website in close cooperation with Mathias Kaun. Marc Gilbert was elected as new Secretary.

8. Next conference

Thanks to Olivier Höhn’s invitation, the thirty-forth annual EASL conference will be held Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th September 2014 at the East Asian Library, Stockholm University, Sweden. Maja Fuchs will find out what EASL could contribute to the EACS meeting in Portugal (Braga, July 2014).

There was also an invitation from Oxford to hold the 2015 EASL meeting there.

The thirty-third EASL conference closed with an expression of thanks to Alice De Jong for her excellent arrangements.
