What Ever Happened to in-yer-face theatre? Aleks SIERZ (Theatre Critic and Visiting Research Fellow, Rose Bruford College) “I have one ambition – to write a book that will hold good for ten years afterwards.” Cyril Connolly, Enemies of Promise • Tuesday, 23 February 1999; Brixton, south London; morning. A Victorian terraced house in a road with no trees. Inside, a cloud of acrid dust rises from the ground floor. Two workmen are demolishing the wall that separates the dining room from the living room. They sweat; they curse; they sing; they laugh. The floor is covered in plaster, wooden slats, torn paper and lots of dust. Dust hangs in the air. Upstairs, Aleks is hiding from the disruption. He is sitting at his desk. His partner Lia is on a train, travelling across the city to deliver a lecture at the University of East London. Suddenly, the phone rings. It’s her. And she tells him that Sarah Kane is dead. She’s just seen the playwright’s photograph in the newspaper and read the story, straining to see over someone’s shoulder. Aleks immediately runs out, buys a newspaper, then phones playwright Mark Ravenhill, a friend of Kane’s. He gets in touch with Mel Kenyon, her agent. Yes, it’s true: Kane, who suffered from depression for much of her life, has committed suicide. She is just twenty-eight years old. Her celebrity status, her central role in the history of contemporary British theatre, is attested by the obituaries published by all the major newspapers. Aleks returns to his desk. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Actor, writer, performance artist, and wit Quentin Crisp described himself as "one of the stately homos of England" and "not merely a self-confessed homosexual, but a self-evident one." He became a celebrity in England as a result of his extraordinary autobiography, The Naked Civil Servant (1968), and a celebrity in the United States when its dramatization as a television movie starring John Hurt was broadcast in New York in 1976. Crisp was born Denis Charles Pratt on December 25, 1908, the youngest of four children of a solicitor and a nursery governess. He was educated at a minor public school in Staffordshire and then took art courses at Battersea Polytechnic and High Whitcomb. As a young man in London he supported himself in a variety of ways, including designing book covers, freelancing as a commercial artist, and occasionally working as a prostitute and a tap-dancing teacher. During World War II, exempt from military service because of his open homosexuality, he was employed by a government-funded art school as a nude model. Hence, he became a "naked civil servant," as he entitled his autobiography. Because his homosexuality was so self-evident, as epitomized by his effeminacy, hennaed hair, long fingernails, and make-up, Crisp not only became a London "character" in the 1930s and 1940s, but frequently aroused the anger of total strangers, who sometimes attacked him physically, beating and spitting upon him, simply for being who he was. -

Law, Gender and Sexuality an introduction to LSE Library collections Author Heather Dawson Academic Liaison Librarian, LSE Library 10 Portugal Street London WC2A 2HD Abstract This article outlines primary and secondary source materials relevant to the academic study of law, gender and sexuality which are available in the LSE library. It includes coverage of the content of the Hall-Carpenter Archive as well as books, journal and archival materials accessible via the Women's Library@LSE. Practical guidance is provided to researchers in using the Library and searching its catalogues effectively. Biographical summary Heather Dawson is an Academic Support Librarian at the LSE Library where she has worked since 1996. She is based in the Academic Services Group and is involved in collection development and assisting staff and students in using the gender studies materials effectively. Wordcount 4,120 (including abstracts) Introduction The long history of the LSE Library means that it has a rich heritage of materials related to all aspects of the study of law, gender and sexuality. However, its gradual and, often convoluted development, present a complexity of collections and catalogues which researchers need to navigate. This article aims to highlight key features and provide practical tips on locating and accessing them. The British Library of Political and Economic Science was founded in 1896, a year after the London School of Economics and Political Science.
