Review Popular Music and National Culture in Israel, by Motti Regev and Edwin Seroussi. Berkeley–Los Angeles–London: University of California Press, 2004. Paperback, 308 pp., ISBN 0 520 23654 8 The study of popular music in Israel is a relatively new field. Although it has a history of more than a century, since the beginning of the Zionist establishment in Israel in the late nineteenth century, the bulk of this genre was created after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. The few studies of the popular music of Israel’s Jewish population that were carried out before the 1980s dealt mainly with the genre known as “Songs of the Land of Israel.”1 From the early ’80s until the beginning of the twenty-first century, the range of subjects covered by this research was expanded. “Songs of the Land of Israel” still played a central role,2 but other categories of Israeli popular music, such as “Oriental” or “Mediterranean” music,3 and Israeli rock,4 were also studied, as was the influence of foreign music on Israeli popular music.5 Another field of research developed in the early twenty-first century was the detailed analysis of the musical and linguistic characteristics of composers and poets whose work was set to music. This music, too, belongs to the category of “Songs of the Land of Israel.”6 The book reviewed here differs from previous studies in that it provides a broad, overall view of popular music in Israeli society. It is the first attempt to survey Israel’s popular music as a complete field of research. -

It is located near the southern area of the Jordan valley. The salt-rich Dead Sea is the lowest point on the earth's surface, being 400 meters below sea level. The air around the Dead Sea is unpolluted, dry, and pollen-free with low humidity, providing a naturally relaxing environment. The air in the region has a high mineral content due to the constant evaporation of the mineral rich water. 3. The Dead Sea comes in the list of the world's greatest landmarks, and is sometimes considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. People usually miss out on this as they do not realize the importance of its unique contents. The Dead Sea has twenty-one minerals which have been found to give nourishment to the skin, stimulate the circulatory system, give a relaxed feeling, and treat disorders of the metabolism and rheumatism and associate pains. The Dead Sea mud has been used by people all over the world for beauty purposes. -

Monday 08 August, 2016 Published On: Sun, May 31st, 2015 Israel & Middle East / Life & Style / Religion | By Reggie Reiner The Polyphony Foundation Brings Arab and Jewish Israeli Musicians Together With Classical Music "It’s really to give young people from both communities a chance to interact and to become more familiar with the other." - – There are so many different people and organizations today dedicated to building bridges between Jews and Arabs around the world. The Polyphony Foundation uses classical music to do so in Israel. The organization declares its goal to be to find common ground through a common sound. It states that it has created a place of harmony where young people, both Arab and Jew, come together around classical music. This harmony is achieved in Israel through various programs operated by Polyphony Education Israel as part of a multi- tiered programming structure designed to move the students from beginner to professional performer. As the students advance from program to program, they encounter increasingly mixed groups of Arabs and Jews, so as they learn to appreciate music, they also learn to appreciate each other. Through the common language of music, they learn to look beyond their differences to see the culture, connection and humanity they share. Currently, these programs reach more than 6,000 Arab and Jewish youth and provide training and employment for over 100 teachers, according to the organization. – – It was created in 2011 by New York residents Deborah and Craig Cogut and artistic director Nabeel Abboud-Ashkar. Born in institutions is traced from the founding of the State of Israel present-day Poland, Tal studied during his teen years in 1948. Core developments are followed beginning with at the Staatliche Akademische Hochschule fur Music the founding generation including Joseph Tal, Tzvi Avni and in Berlin. Among his teachers was Paul Hindemith Yizhak Sadai, continuing with the second and third who, he recalls, ‘pointed me in the direction of elec- generations of musicians and researchers, living in Israel and the United States. Dear Friends, Regarding material published in Israel I occasionally prefer to mention the more popular material and not just, say, archaeology at Lachish. I contend that sometimes in music CDs, museum catalogs or even Haggadot we can often learn so much from language to social trends, influences and history. A new significant CD has come out with Yossi Banai Reading Tehillim (Psalms) - (or in Hebrew.... Yossi Banai Koreh Tehilim) . This of course is of multi - disciplinary interest and defies categorization. The blurb on the back of this boxed set reads: "The 19 Psalms read by Yossi Banai, one of the greatest Israeli actors, to original music by Jonathan Bar Giora, and the book of Psalms, presented to the modern Hebrew reader by Dr. Moshe Anat, illuminate the sublime art of the Hebrew poets who wrote The Book of Psalms thousands of years ago." (Tov, so the english blurb isn't great but you get the picture.) But this boxed set is impressive - it includes the CD, with an English and Hebrew listing of the tracks and a hardcover copy (about 8.5" x 6") of Tehilim in Hebrew. This would not only make a wonderful educational tool but also a beautiful present. Cat. # 55797 $24.00 'To Fall in Love with Israel,' (Lehit'ahev be-'Erets Yisrael) is a new book of walks in Israel by the author (Israel researcher) Ofer Regev, and includes history with discovery by focusing not on the wars and battles associated with places but rather, love stories. For example in Jerusalem the life and love of Eliezer Ben Yehuda and the house in Talpiot. -
Israeli Music and Its Study
Music in Israel at Sixty: Processes and Experiences1 Edwin Seroussi (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) Drawing a panoramic assessment of a field of culture that resists clear categorizations and whose readings offer multiple and utterly contrasting options such as Israeli music is a challenge entailing high intellectual risks. For no matter which way your interpretations lean you will always be suspected of aligning with one ideological agenda or another. Untangling the music, and for that matter any field of modern Israeli culture, is a task bound to oversimplification unless one abandons all aspirations to interpret the whole and just focuses on the more humble mission of selecting a few decisive moments which illuminate trends and processes within that whole. Modest perhaps as an interpretative strategy, by concentrating on discrete time, spatial and discursive units (a concert, a band, an album, an obituary, a music store, an academic conference, etc) this paper attempts to draw some meaningful insights as sixty years of music-making in Israel are marked. The periodic marking of the completion of time cycles, such as decades or centuries, is a way for human beings to domesticate and structure the unstoppable stream of consciousness that we call time.2 If one accepts the premise that the specific timing of any given time cycle is pure convention, one may cynically interpret the unusually lavish celebrations of “Israel at Sixty” as a design of Israeli politicians to focus the public attention both within and outside the country on a positive image of the state 1 This paper was read as the keynote address for the conference Hearing Israel: Music, Culture and History at 60, held at the University of Virginia, April 13-14, 2008. -

An impressive number of Israeli jazz performers have received widespread exposure and acclaim over the last twenty years. Artists such as Omer Avital (bass), Anat Cohen (woodwinds), Avishai Cohen (bass) among many others have successfully established themselves on a global scale, creating music that melds various aspects of American jazz with an array of Israeli, Jewish and Middle-Eastern influences and those from numerous other non- Western musical traditions. While each musician is developing his or her own approach to musical transculturation, common threads connect them all. Unraveling these entangled sounds and related discourses lies at the center of my study. While this is the first comprehensive study of the contributions
