Mohammed et al. CABI Agric Biosci (2021) 2:25 https://doi.org/10.1186/s43170-021-00046-7 CABI Agriculture and Bioscience RESEARCH Open Access Appraisal of cowpea cropping systems and farmers’ perceptions of production constraints and preferences in the dry savannah areas of Nigeria Saba Baba Mohammed1,2, Daniel Kwadjo Dzidzienyo2* , Muhammad Lawan Umar1, Mohammad Faguji Ishiyaku1, Pangirayi Bernard Tongoona2 and Vernon Gracen2,3 Abstract Background: Low plant density and wide intra-plant spacing in traditional cowpea cropping systems are among the factors responsible for low yield on farmers’ felds. Sole cropping and improved intercropping systems have been advocated in the last few years to increase yield in the dry savannah areas of Nigeria. This study investigated the level of adoption of high yielding cowpea cropping systems including factors that infuenced their use and farmers’ perceived production constraints and preferences. A total of 420 farmers across 36 villages of northern Nigeria were interviewed, and data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics to appraise farmers predominant cowpea cropping systems and factors that determine the use of sole versus intercropping were identifed with the aid of binary logit regression. Furthermore, pairwise comparison ranking was deployed to understand farmers’ view of cow- pea production constraints and preferred traits. Results: The results revealed that, many of the farmers (42%) still grow cowpeas in the traditional intercropping and a good number (25%) cultivate the crop as a sole crop, while 23% had felds of cowpeas in both sole and intercropping systems. Farmers reported the incidence of high insect pests, limited access to land, desire to have multiple benefts, and assurance in the event of crop failure as reasons for preference for intercropping over sole planting.

SGOXXX10.1177/2158244015576053SAGE OpenSuleiman and Karim 576053research-article2015 Article SAGE Open January-March 2015: 1 –11 Cycle of Bad Governance and Corruption: © The Author(s) 2015 DOI: 10.1177/2158244015576053 The Rise of Boko Haram in Nigeria sgo.sagepub.com Mohammed Nuruddeen Suleiman1 and Mohammed Aminul Karim1 Abstract This article argues that bad governance and corruption particularly in the Northern part of Nigeria have been responsible for the persistent rise in the activities of Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JASLWJ), Arabic for “people committed to the propagation of the tradition and jihad.” It is also known as “Boko Haram,” commonly translated as “Western education is sin.” Based on qualitative data obtained through interviews with Nigerians, this article explicates how poor governance in the country has created a vicious cycle of corruption, poverty, and unemployment, leading to violence. Although JASLWJ avows a religious purpose in its activities, it takes full advantage of the social and economic deprivation to recruit new members. For any viable short- or long-term solution, this article concludes that the country must go all-out with its anti- corruption crusade. This will enable the revival of other critical sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, likely ensuring more employment. Should the country fail to stamp out corruption, it will continue to witness an upsurge in the activities of JASLWJ, and perhaps even the emergence of other violent groups. The spillover effects may be felt not only across Nigeria but also within the entire West African region. Adeyemi Department of Animal Production Federal University of Technology, P.M.B. 65, Minna, Niger state. *Correspondence: Tel.: 08057058455, email: [email protected] Abstract The incidence of trypanosomes was investigated among cattle herds of white Fulani and Sokoto Gudali breeds in six out of twenty five Local Government Areas of Niger State within a period of six months covering May - October, 2007. Blood samples from 300 heads of cattle selected randomly from the Fulani herds were screened for Trypanosomes using a thin blood smear and haematocrit centrifugation techniques at the State Veterinary Centre, Bosso, Minna. The result revealed that the white Fulani breeds of cattle had higher incidence of Trypanosomes compared to Sokoto Gudali breeds representing 38.2 and 28.2% for white Fulani and Sokoto Gudali breeds respectively with an overall incidence of 6.3 %. It is clearly evident that the study area is endemic for trypanosomosis as such, effective control programme by way of prophylactic treatment is recommended. Introducing the Immunity Boosting Sweet Potato to Kano State Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest risk of Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD). It is also particularly challenging to reach the most vulnerable children in rural, hard to reach communities as these communities are often missed during Vitamin A supplementation programs. As such, only two in five children receive adequate levels of supplementation, leaving a higher percentage of children at risk of Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD). National surveys show that Kano state has one of the lowest vitamin A uptake levels. eHealth Africa received funding from the German Cooperation (GIZ) to implement a pilot project with the goal of supplementing vitamin A uptake and Pictures from the hands-on training and cooking demon- diversifying the diets of GIZ farmers in Kano state stration. through the introduction of Orange- Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP). D Abstract Original Research Article One of the greatest security challenges in Nigeria in recent time is the increasing conflicts between crop farmers and herders. Today, the conflict has spread over wide geographical areas on the continents of Africa, Nigeria and Taraba state in particular. In the same manner, the weapons used in the conflict have moved from small and light arms to use of heavy and complex weapons and ammunitions such as rifles and AK47 among others. Taraba State is one of the States in Nigeria that have been greatly affected by conflict between crop farmers and cattle herders. It is against this background that this paper examines the increased level of conflict between farmers and herders in Nigeria, the dynamics associated with the conflict and its impacts on food security in the country with special focus on Taraba State. This study analyses the factors that help cause or aggravate these conflicts, their evolution and spread, and their human toll in the State. It further assesses responses, especially by the federal government and its security agencies, and outlines possible strategies to reduce or prevent occurrence of the conflicts.

  • First Election Security Threat Assessment
SECURITY THREAT ASSESSMENT: TOWARDS 2015 ELECTIONS January – June 2013 edition With Support from the MacArthur Foundation Table of Contents I. Executive Summary II. Security Threat Assessment for North Central III. Security Threat Assessment for North East IV. Security Threat Assessment for North West V. Security Threat Assessment for South East VI. Security Threat Assessment for South South VII. Security Threat Assessment for South West Executive Summary Political Context The merger between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and other smaller parties, has provided an opportunity for opposition parties to align and challenge the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This however will also provide the backdrop for a keenly contested election in 2015. The zoning arrangement for the presidency is also a key issue that will define the face of the 2015 elections and possible security consequences. Across the six geopolitical zones, other factors will define the elections. These include the persisting state of insecurity from the insurgency and activities of militants and vigilante groups, the high stakes of election as a result of the availability of derivation revenues, the ethnic heterogeneity that makes elite consensus more difficult to attain, as well as the difficult environmental terrain that makes policing of elections a herculean task. Preparations for the Elections The political temperature across the country is heating up in preparation for the 2015 elections. While some state governors are up for re-election, most others are serving out their second terms. The implication is that most of the states are open for grab by either of the major parties and will therefore make the electoral contest fiercer in 2015 both within the political parties and in the general election.
