Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence.     Asian Journal of Social Science 45 (2017) 749–778 brill.com/ajss Between Fear and Hope at the Bangladesh-Assam Border Éva Rozália Hölzle Bielefeld University Abstract This paper is about the inhabitants of a small village in Bangladesh, which lies on the border with the Indian state of Assam. Due to an Indo-Bangladesh agreement, inhab- itants are confronted with losing their agricultural lands. In addition, since 2010, the Border Security Force of India (bsf) impedes residents in approaching their gardens, an action that has led to repeated confrontations between the bsf and the villagers. Both threats instigate high levels of fear among the residents. However, their hopes are also high. How can we explain equally high levels of fear and hope among the residents? I suggest that the simultaneous surfacing of fear and hope sheds light on “bipolar” state practices on the ground (i.e., at the same time targeting and protecting lives), as well as the entanglement of the existential and the political (i.e., vulnerability and a demand for recognition) in the everyday lives of the residents. The majority of the residents are Pnar and War Khasis. They earn a subsistence income from betel leaf (pan) production. While their houses are in Bangladesh, their agricultural lands lie on a 300-acre- stretch of territory in no man’s land, that is, between Bangladesh and India. The villagers have not had official land titles over their area of residence or the farmlands since the colonial period.

The ethnic group Tai Ahoms of Assam has been asserting their ethnic identity more than a century old today. The Ahoms who once ruled over Assam seek to maintain their distinct identity within the larger Assamese society. The Tai Ahoms of Assam faced a lot of problem after independence in different aspects. Moreover, though once Tai Ahoms ancestors were ruling race but today they have been squarely backward .They have been recognized as one of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. As a measure to solve their multifold and multifaceted demands, the ethnic group Tai Ahoms has been struggling through their organizations. In present time, All Tai Ahom Student Union (ATASU) has been very much concerned about the various problems of Tai Ahoms community. The environmental factors like the great earth quake of 1950 displaced many people in the state. Flood and river bank erosion too have caused displacement of many people in Assam every year. But the displacement which has drawn the attention of the social scientists is the internal displacement caused by conflicts and identity movements. The Official Language Movement of 1960 , Language movement of 1972 and the Assam movement(1979-1985) were the main identity movements which generated large scale violence conflicts and internal displacement in post colonial Assam .These identity movements and their consequence internal displacement can not be understood in isolation from the ethno –linguistic composition, colonial policy of administration, complex history of migration and the partition of the state in 1947.Considering these factors in the present study an attempt has been made to analyze the internal displacement caused by Language movements and Assam movement. Plan of the Project/Workshop The three-day Workshop was planned in a way that would give the participants enough opportunity to get to know the victims of forced migration directly. Enough room was left for theoretical sessions as well as sessions based on practical experiences of the practising journalists. CRG had chosen the Tibetan Self Help Centre at Darjeeling and the Indigenous Lep cha Tribal Association at Kalimpong and an indigenous Lepcha village near Lolegaon as two sites for field visits. Accordingly, it was decided that the Participants (the Workshop as well as the Orientation Course Participants) would reach Darjeeling a day before the field visits, and have a pre-field visit orientation and a Round-Table discussion on “Between the State, Media and the People”. The next day was marked for two field visits by participants, who were divided into two groups. It was also planned that in the evening of the field visits (on return to Darjeeling), an interaction between the participants and the members of local media would be organised. It was also decided that some of the important local dignitaries should be invited to take part in that interactive session. On the next day, the participants were to visit the North Bengal University (NBU) at Siliguri, on their way back to Kolkata. There the participants would share their experiences of field visits with the students and teachers of t he NBU.

    The Insecure World of the Nation Ranabir Samaddar In T​he Marginal Nation,​ which dealt with trans­border migration from Bangladesh to West Bengal, two moods, two mentalities, and two worlds were in description – that of cartographic anxiety and an ironic un­concern. In that description of marginality, where nations, borders, boundaries, communities, and the political societies were enmeshed in making a non­nationalised world, and the citizen­migrant (two animals yet at the same time one) formed the political subject of this universe of transcendence, interconnections and linkages were the priority theme. Clearly, though conflict was an underlying strain throughout the book, the emphasis was on the human condition of the subject ­ the migrant’s capacity to transgress the various boundaries set in place by nation­formation in South Asia. Therefore, responding to the debate on the numbers of illegal migrants I termed it as a “numbers game”. My argument was that in this world of edges, the problem was not what was truth (a​bout nationality, identity, and numbers), but truth (o​f n​ationality, identity, and numbers) itself was the problem.1 Yet, this was an excessively humanised description, that today on hindsight after the passing of some years since its publication, seems to have downplayed the overwhelming factor of conflict and wars that take place because “communities must be defended” – one can say the “permanent condition” in which communities find themselves.
