Class of ’73

"In Memory of Tom Hutton '61, loyal friend and devoted Owl"

7 8 9 BASEBALL John Jarnagin, Head Coach

A native of San Diego, CA, Jarnagin, is a five-time “Coach of the Year” recipient, who brings over 30 years of coaching experience to MUS. Before joining MUS, Jarnagin began the baseball program at Victory University in 2013 and just completed his second season, where he led Victory to the USCAA Small College World Series in which the team came in fourth. Victory was ranked in the top 10 in the nation much of the year, finishing the season 31-24 for a second consecutive 30-win season. Jarnigan previously served as the head baseball coach at Morehead State University in Kentucky from 1996-2007 and the University of Montevallo in Alabama from 2008-2010. Prior to Morehead State, Jarnagin was the head baseball coach at Shelby State Community College in Memphis, TN, where he was later inducted into the Southwest Tennessee Community College Hall of Fame (2004) as the winningest baseball coach. In 1992, he was named the co-coach of the year for the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. He received four other coach-of-the-year honors during this time at the helm of the Shelby State CC program. Coach Jarnagin has coached eight players that were selected for the Major League draft.

BASKETBALL Matt Bakke, Head Coach

Bakke took the helm as head coach of the varsity basketball team in 2012-13 after legendary Coach Jerry Peters retired. The success of the program continues under Bakke, who came to MUS in the fall of 1999 and served 13 years as assistant basketball coach under Peters. The program has a long history of district and regional championships and state tournament play, and in 2007 the Owls captured the state title. Through the years, Bakke has taken on multiple roles, including coach of the Lower School cross-country and track teams and, currently, chair of the Physical Education Department. For his dedicated service to MUS, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2011. Prior to his arrival at MUS, Bakke coached at both Millington Central High School and Rhodes College. A graduate of White Station, he played at Southwest Tennessee Community College, where he is a member of the Saluqis Athletic Hall of Fame, and Rhodes College. This season, Bakke will be assisted by coaches Mark Counce ’77 and Trey Suddarth.

BOWLING Dr. David Jackson, Head Coach

Since bowling was initiated as a varsity sport in 2008, it has grown in popularity and accomplishments each year. In their sixth season, the Owls had a great showing at the state championship. The Owls entered the state tournament as the No. 3 seed and faced the No. 4 seed, McCallie, in the quarterfinal match Friday afternoon. MUS lost to McCallie 18-9 in the state quarterfinals. Jackson first came to MUS in 1974 and stayed for eight years while serving as chairman of the Religion Department. He left in 1982 to pastor a church, and for the next 23 years, he led a congregation in Jackson, MS, and one in Knoxville. Upon returning to MUS in 2005, he holds the Robert J. Hussey, Sr. Chair of Religion.

10 CROSS COUNTRY Joe Tyler, Head Coach

This season will mark Tyler’s 15th as head coach of the cross-country team. Before coming to MUS he was assistant cross-country coach at Christian Brothers High School and Houston High School. Tyler grew up in Kansas City, MO, graduated from Creighton University, and obtained a master’s degree from the University of Memphis. He arrived at MUS in 1999 to teach mathematics in the Lower School and has assisted in coaching basketball and track. He now serves as the assistant principal in the Lower School, in addition to his teaching and coaching duties. His cross-country squad in 2000 contributed to the excellence of the MUS program, finishing a solid third in the state meet. In 2005 the team placed second in the state, its highest finish since 1996. Last season, the Owls took third place in the state meet. Coach Tyler was named The Commercial Appeal’s Coach of the Year in cross country.

FENCING Brad Kroeker, Head Coach

Under Kroeker’s direction, fencing started as a club sport at MUS in 2005 but grew in popularity and became the 14th varsity sport in 2009. The fencing Owls have competed in the Junior Olympics in Albuquerque, NM; Charlotte, NC; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Salt Lake City, UT; and Memphis, as well as at national championships in Atlanta, GA, and Reno, NV. In the Tennessee State Secondary School Fencing Championships, the Owls won the state épeé title in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014, and the saber title 2008-14. In 2014, for the third consecutive year, the fencers are state champs. Before coming to MUS, Kroeker worked two years with M. Bella Walther of the Hungarian national saber team and two years with Sergey Petrosian of the Russian/Armenia junior foil team (who is also working with Owl fencing). Kroeker then coached and taught fencing classes at Rhodes College from 1999-2004. During this time his fencers won many awards, including a bronze medal in saber at the 1999 national championships from a field of 40 divisions. The team ranked among the Top 25 for the 2000-01 season.

GOLF Cliff Frisby, Head Coach

Frisby, a 33-year member of the Professional Golf Association (PGA), has been the director of the United States Junior Golf Tour since 2001. This will be his sixth year as head coach of the varsity golf team. He served as acting coach in several matches throughout the 2008 season, including the state championships, after Greg King stepped down as head coach to become director of the Mirimichi Golf Course in Millington. Frisby took over a very successful MUS program, and his golfers have claimed five state titles, seven runner- up finishes, and 15 overall regional titles. In 2013 Frisby fielded a competitive group that now wear the proud title of state champs, taking the championship by 11 strokes. This was the first state championship for the golfing owls since 1996. The Owls are now poised to make a run for region and state championships in 2014.

11 LACROSSE Elliott Dent, Head Coach

Lacrosse started as a club sport at MUS in 1990, eventually becoming the 10th varsity sport in 1995. In 1996 Dent came fresh from college-level lacrosse at Hampden-Sydney College to teach religion and English and become head coach of the varsity lacrosse team. His MUS teams have gone on to win more than 220 games. The Owls won their first TSLA championship in 1990, and Dent’s squads have added 10 more state titles. In 2014 the Owls went 17-3 and became the TSLA champions for the fourth year in a row. Additionally, Dent was named The Commercial Appeal’s Best of the Preps Coach of the Year for the sixth consecutive year. During Dent’s tenure the team has beaten squads from California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia. He has amassed a record of 221-52 and coached 24 All-Americans and seven Academic All-Americans since 1997. Dent was named the TSLA Coach of the Year in 1999 and was the president of the TSLA from 1999-2004. In 2002 he was the coach for the West All-Star Team in the U.S. Lacrosse High School All-Star Games. Under his leadership, the summer lacrosse camp has become very popular, introducing more boys to the game.

SOCCER Vincent Beck, Head Coach

Beck has been the head coach of the MUS soccer team for the past 16 seasons. In 1998 he led the team to the state quarterfinals and has reached the state tournament every year since. He has also led some championship squads, including the 1999 team, which was undefeated in the region and took home the regional championship. His 2004 squad reached high school soccer’s pinnacle by winning the state title, defeating University School of Nashville, 2-0, in the championship match. Beck grew up in Scotland playing soccer, but he says his inspiration came from Mike Berticelli, former head soccer coach at the University of Notre Dame. Before coming to MUS Beck played indoor soccer professionally for 12 years and was a three-time All-Star. He played two seasons for the pro team Memphis Express. He also was an assistant coach for a professional team for three years and coached high school boys and girls teams for two years, including a high school boys team in Tulsa, OK, that won the 1991 state championship. The Commercial Appeal named Beck the Soccer Coach of the Year in 2004.

SWIMMING Bryan Parker, Head Coach

The swim program was resurrected at MUS in 1999 after being dormant since the 1930s. Now in their 16th season, the aquatic Owls are the largest men’s swim team in the conference, with the squad averaging more than 30 swimmers per season. The 2012 season was the first for Parker as varsity head coach. Parker came to MUS with more than 10 years of coaching experience, and for his efforts he was named The Commercial Appeal’s Best of the Preps Coach of the Year for 2012, 2013, and 2014. Last year the team claimed a sixth consecutive Shelby County championship and finished an impressive second place at the state championships, the highest finish in school history for the swim team. The relay teams also placed the highest in school history as well.

12 TENNIS Bill Taylor, Head Coach

The tennis program under Taylor continues as one of the dominant sports programs in Tennessee high school athletics. Now in his 39th season with the Owls, Taylor has coached his teams to 24 district championships and 34 regional titles. Overall, his teams have won 14 state titles and claimed the runner-up spot nine times, and his players have claimed 14 state doubles titles and 10 singles championships. Taylor has been named Tennis Coach of the Year by The Commercial Appeal for 13 of the past 16 years, including 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. In college Taylor played tennis for Southwestern (now Rhodes College) while earning his degree. The 2014 varsity tennis team won its 15th TSSAA Division II-AA team championship – breaking Baylor’s record for the most titles in state history – and also swept the singles and doubles titles, winning in dominating fashion. This is the second consecutive year the Owls have accomplished this trifecta. Besides coaching he also teaches biology and directs the MUS in Europe summer programs. He currently holds the Ruth McCaughan Morrison Chair of Science.

TRACK & FIELD Bobby Alston, Head Coach

Alston starts his 30th season as track and field head coach. Coaches assisting Alston at the varsity level are Orlando McKay, Joe Tyler, Johnny Jones, Jonas Holdeman, Ross Rutledge ’02, Dave Ferebee, and Glenn Rogers. The 2014 track season will go down as one of the most suc- cessful in school history, with the Owls setting four state records and 10 school records on their way to claiming the program’s fifth TSSAA Division II Track & Field championship – and its first since 2009. The team finished with a remarkable 172-11 record against all opponents in 10 meets. Alston has been recognized multiple times by The Commercial Appeal as Track and Field Coach of the Year. He also serves as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director of the school.

TRAPSHOOTING Hamilton Eggers ’94, Head Coach

Begun as a club sport in 2005 by Patrick McCarroll ’92, trapshooting has grown into a popular spring sport. In 2008 the program became the school’s 12th varsity sport. Eggers inherited a sound program when he took the reins from McCarroll in 2009. As a member of the (SCTP), the team competes against public and independent schools in several regular-season shoots in preparation for the postseason. The program emphasizes safety and sportsmanship as teams of five athletes shoot at clay targets released from a central trap house. The trapshooting program’s goal parallels the mission of the Tennessee SCTP: to teach the importance of safe firearms handling, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork, and to promote healthy competition.

13 FEEL THE BEAT!

Starting this fall the first-ever MUS Drum Corps, formed through the inspiration of Ahmed Latif ’15, will perform at some home football and basketball games. They have been training all summer to raise your Owl spirit to a new level of excitement.

14 WRESTLING Steve Hendricks, Head Coach

Hendricks began his career in Cape Girardeau, MO, as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State University. He also coached at Millington High School from 1975-1991, establishing a team record of 168-48-3. After several years in administration with Shelby County Schools, he transferred to Bolton High School. From 1998-2003 his duties included coaching wrestling, and his teams established a record of 78-22. After retirement from Shelby County Schools, he began coaching as an assistant at MUS with both the Lower School and Upper School teams. This fall Hendricks starts his sixth year as an MUS head coach. The 2013 wrestling team completed the season with a Top 10 finish at the state tournament in Nashville. The Owls placed ninth, with three wrestlers earning medals: sophomore Xavier Greer (sixth place, 113-pound weight class), sophomore Connor Stewart (sixth place, 126-pound weight class), and senior Trey O'Bannon (sixth place, 138-pound weight class).

The final game was a Thanksgiving Day contest with CBHS. MUS officials notified CBHS and other officials that the school did not have enough healthy athletes to play and announced that the school would forfeit the game. Bobby Alston Head Coach/ Hired by Col. Ross Lynn in 1977, Bobby Alston joined the varsity football staff in 1980 as defensive coordinator, switching to offense in 1983 as the Owls moved from the wishbone to a more wide-open attack. In 1998, Alston followed Jake Rudolph (1959-97) and Gene Thorn (1957-58) to become only the third head football coach in the school’s modern history. During his tenure on the Owls’ staff, MUS has gone 294-104, been the state runner-up four times and won five state championships, including the 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009 titles.

The Commercial Appeal has honored Alston as Coach of the Year three times (2004, 2005, and 2008) and Sportsman of the Year in 2009. 51 Now in its second decade, the Tennessee Super Prep Conference continues to represent the very best in high school football. Begun in 1997, the league originally had seven members from across the state: Baylor School, Brentwood Academy, Christian Brothers High School, Father Ryan High School, The McCallie School, Memphis University School, and Montgomery Bell Academy. Because of the success and tradition of these seven institutions in the classroom and on the field, the league earned the monikerSuper 7. For nine years, this league established itself as one of the premier conferences in the country. The member schools won more than 75 percent of their games against non-league opponents and defeated powerful teams from neighboring states such as Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas. In fact, in seven of its first nine years, the league had at least one school ranked in the USA Today Top 25 poll, a truly amazing record. Since 2006, the league has expanded, changed the name to Tennessee Super Prep, and now includes all of its original seven members, plus Briarcrest Christian School, Ensworth School, Pope John Paul II, and St. Benedict at Auburndale. The TSSAA has divided the league into two regions, Mid-East and West. All of the teams will enter the playoff system, which was restructured in 2009 to include four games over the course of five weeks. With 11 members, the conference continues to exemplify the adjective super. Therefore, no matter where you may be in the state, if you are enjoying a Friday night in the Tennessee Super Prep Conference, you are seeing the best in high school football. WEST REGION

59 MEET THE BROADCAST TEAM

MIKE LAWHEAD BOBBY WADE ’84 BARRY RAY

MUS varsity football games are broadcast on WMC 790 AM, and this is the crew you hear. Marking the 18th year of Owl Broadcasting, Mike Lawhead gives play-by-play with Bobby Wade ’84 and Barry Ray providing color commentary. If you can’t be at the game, tune to WMC 790 AM to hear all the action.

NORMAN THOMPSON BILL TAYLOR DAX TORREY ’94

VOICE OF THE OWLS AND HIS CREW If you have attended an MUS home football game in the last 29 years, you have heard the voice of “Stormin’” Norman Thompson over the loudspeaker. Thompson, MUS English teacher by day since 1972, became the play-by-play announcer for the Owls’ home games in the fall of 1985, when Coach Jake Rudolph drafted him. Since that first season, Thompson has not missed a home game and declares, “There is no place on earth that I would rather be on a Friday night.” Over the years, he has honed his skill at reporting and has become famous for coining such terms as “Tackle made by a host of Owls!” and has even been referred to as the “Voice of the Owls.” Bill Taylor is also on hand every home game to aid Thompson by spotting players, and Dax Torrey ’94 lends his expertise as the official game statistician. So next time you attend a home game, take a time-out to appreciate this dedicated crew and listen to “Stormin’ Norman” call them as he sees them. Check out the MUS website, www.musowls.org, for updated sports information and live webcasts of home games.
