COLUMBIA CLUB JUNE 2016

the Telltale

Saturdays are for When a world class sailor offers to give up her Saturday mornings to teach sailing to a group of struggling sunfish sailors...well, it’s an offer you just can’t pass up. Elaine Parshall dedicated every Saturday in June to do just that. For those of us that a took advantage of her generous offer, we can’t thank her enough for very patiently sharing her expertise and giving us the confidence to get out there on Thursday nights to test our new found skills. We’d also like to than Judy Williams & Crawford Milling for setting up courses, giving sailing tips and helping to right boats. It’s been great fun and we’re having a blast!

Thank you Elaine!

At the Helm Commodore Andrew Clarkson There have been plenty of great things happening at the club this month.

Maria Dehart, Mike Brothers, Dick Dommel, David Moseley, & Bob Beauregard “Tee’ed” it up and Ryan Hargrave along with his able bodied camp instructors and helpers “Crushed it.” With more that 88 campers attending, this year’s CSC Sailing Camp goes in the record books as the largest EVER! When you see these guys, please give them a huge thank you. Earlier this month Elaine Parshall coached a wildly successful Sunfish Racing Clinic. The response was so enthusiastic that she has agreed to extend the seminars through the month of June. She’s calling it Boards and Breakfast and will start each Saturday morning at 8am lasting to 11am. These will end Saturday, July 2nd. So if you’ve not had the chance, time is short. And, kudos to Elaine for being invited to compete in the International Women’s Keelboat Championship. This is to be held at the American Yacht Club in Rye, NY on August 14-20th. There are only 24 teams from around the world invited to compete! The event will be sailed in J/70 type boats, in which Elaine and TEAM CSC took first place in last year’s SAYRA Championships. Be on the lookout - more information to follow. Lastly, plans are well under way for this year’s Independence Day picnic and beach party. This year’s event will be on Saturday, July 2nd with Boat parade and fireworks held at the customary time and place. Please make sure to RSVP with Bart at [email protected], letting them know to put your name in the pot for BBQ.

A few more upcoming events and dates of note: nn July 6th CSC Board meeting nn Thursday Evening Summer Series nn August 3rd CSC Board meeting

One parting thought: Earlier this month Caroline and I took a week off. Each year Clan Clarkson gets together at a different location decided on a revolving basis by one of my sibs. This year my sis and fellow CSC member Margaret chose Lake Keowee for our respite. The Thursday night prior, I happen to mention to my brother- in- law Peter that I needed a good book for the week. Without any noticeable reflection or hesitation he disappeared momentarily and reappeared with a well wore and loved copy of The Magic of the Swatchways by Maurice Griffiths. I was unfamiliar with this book, and I’m not usually given to book recommendations. If you haven’t read it or haven’t read it lately, this is a sailor’s perfect summer read. Let me know what you think.

See you at the club. PAGE 2 COLUMBIA SAILING CLUB JUNE 2016

CSC Auxiliary News President Jayne Boyle On Friday, May 20th the Auxiliary hosted a club favorite with a “Grill your Own” evening. The joint was jumping with a full house. It was a wonderful informal night with a good time had by all. Thanks to Bill Freeman and Charlie Calhoun for their assistance in the kitchen and with set up and a very special thank you to Pat Freeman who planned and decorated the successful event. The tables were adorned with beautiful handmade flowers by Pat; yet another hidden talent that she has now shared with us all. You are a Wonder Woman, Pat! The month of June kicked off with the New Members party on Saturday the 10th. The event was very well attended and the food was superb. The back porch was festively decorated and CSC was very fortunate to not only have some of our new members in attendance but a few other prospective members as well. Especially worth mentioning was the Margarita Beer punch which appeared to be a great hit and well worth repeating at another time! Thanks go out to our ever-reliable Mike Lambert who assisted with the setup of tables and clean up and also to Dan Clayton and Steve Symanski Jr. for their incomparable bar tending skills. And a final heartfelt thank you to Alecia Milling and Lee Bell who were the two remarkable ladies at the helm of this event, ensuring a wonderful evening for all and wowing our new and prospective members. Kudos, ladies! A reminder that our dingy races are continuing throughout the summer on Thursday evenings and if you have not had the chance to sign up to host one of these meals, please see the openings available on the sign up sheet on the door near the canteen.

Just a reminder that the Auxiliary will be meeting back up again on September 13th. Continued warm wishes for a great summer……

The Vice Report Vice Commodore Dan Robinson

Isn’t it amazing what our club can accomplish in a span of two weeks? As I write this on June 15th, we have completed two youth camps, and the third one is closing fast. There were two other on-the-water training events, the New Member Happy Hour, and two Thursday night dinghy races. So, pay attention, or you might miss something. Membership The New Member Happy Hour was a resounding success due to the efforts of Alecia Milling, Lee Bell, and everyone else who pitched in to help. We honored Bart Thorne, Margaret Clarkson, and Steve Orr at the party, and Mac McCallum, in absentia. We also had the privilege of recognizing several prospective members, two of whom requested a membership application after attending the party. It was a fun happy hour and a productive one, too. Ryan Lavisky has submitted his application for Provisional membership, and he is sponsored by Roger Dougal. Ryan is a recent graduate of USC and was Vice Commodore of the Gamecock Sailing Club. Ryan attended the CSC Youth Camps as a youngster, and continued sailing throughout high school and college. He has recently sailed an Ultimate 20 and J24 in LMYRA and GSC events. He is the first GSC member to apply for CSC membership, and we hope many more will follow. Education As mentioned above, there were numerous educational events for youth and adults this month. Elaine Parshall conducted a Sunfish Racing Clinic the first weekend of the month, and she has volunteered to continue these sessions on Saturday mornings this summer. I have no doubt that the Thursday night dinghy races are going to be much more competitive this year. Those who race sailboats know that they have to serve their turn on race committee occasionally so that everyone gets a chance to compete. That duty requires that our members operate the club’s powerboats to conduct the race. For some longtime sailors, a powerboat is an unfamiliar and foreign object. Jim Holland volunteered to teach a Boat Orientation class this month, and it is something I recommend for novices and those who need a refresher course in operating a powerboat. This class focused on operating a powerboat in tight spaces and around sailors who have capsized and are in the water. Thanks so much to Jim and Ben Strevens for the classroom and hands on instruction to make us safer on the water.

See you at the club.

Every summer has a story. The story at CSC this summer is sailing, sailing, and more sailing! With special thanks to Elaine Parshall for inspiring our dinghy sailors, we are having an active summer of sailing. Elaine hosted a Sunfish Racing Clinic June 4th that was well-attended. From that successful clinic sprang the idea of “Boards and Breakfast” every Saturday morning for those interested in learning more from Elaine. The name was changed by Elaine to “Saturdays are for Sunfish” because no one was bringing breakfast! However, people kept showing up every Saturday. They’ve had good wind and great instruction. Many thanks go to Judy Williams and Crawford Milling for setting up courses and giving sailing tips. A nod goes to Brad Carpenter for helping too. Our Sunfish sailors are getting better and better! LMYRA summer races are in full swing now. The Single-handed race is coming up July 9th and the Couples race is July 23rd. Evening Race #3 is July 16th and Race #4 is July 30th. Bob and Ellen Blundy, Bruce Seiffert, Kris Kenline and Jim Hunter are busy making things happen for LMYRA. Talk to them if you’re interested in joining their summer series. Mark Alexander has been keeping Thursday nights fun by running the dinghy races. If you haven’t come up to the club on Thursday, please do. It is fun to watch the races and there is a porch crowd that is always entertaining! After racing, have a fantastic supper while taking in one of the best views at Lake Murray. These enjoyable Thursdays will continue through August 18th, so come on down!!

International Invitation Jan Jernigan Guess who’s been invited to compete in the International Women’s Keelboat

Championship? You guessed it…our own Elaine Parshall! This event is one of the

premier women’s sailing events in the US and worldwide. The trophy is named for

Bengt Julin, an international judge and strong supporter of women’s sailing.

It will be held at the American

Yacht Club in Rye, NY, August 14th -20th. Teams representing

8 countries from around the world have already submitted applications. While this is a huge honor for Elaine to be invited to this prestigious event, it is also a very expensive regatta.

That’s why we are hosting a very FUN fundraiser for Elaine on Friday, July 22nd at 6:30 pm. This is going to be a great mid- summer party! And it’s all for a great cause! We want to send

Elaine and her crew off in style, so please plan to be there.

If you can’t attend, we are welcoming any and all donations.

Please make your check to

Columbia Sailing Club with a note that it is for Elaine’s trip.

Alecia Milling and I will collect the checks. Thank you all for supporting Elaine in this exciting endeavor. She will make us proud!!!
