Despite these early glimmers of skiing awareness, when the sport began its ascendancy to popularity in the 1930s, the state’s likeliest venues were more distant, and public land ownership less widespread, than was the case in the neighboring states of New Hampshire and Vermont, and ski area development in those states was consequently greater. -

Executive Summary Concord River Diadromous Fish Restoration FEASIBILITY STUDY – DRAFT REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Project Purpose The purpose of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of restoring populations of diadromous fish to the Concord, Sudbury, and Assabet Rivers, collectively known as the SuAsCo Watershed. The primary impediment to fish passage in the Concord River is the Talbot Mills Dam in Billerica, Massachusetts. Prior to reaching the dam, fish must first navigate potential obstacles at the Essex Dam (an active hydro dam with a fish elevator and an eel ladder) on the Merrimack River in Lawrence, Middlesex Falls (a natural bedrock falls and remnants of a breached dam) on the Concord River in Lowell, and Centennial Falls Dam (a hydropower dam with a fish ladder), also on the Concord River in Lowell. Blueback herring Alewife American shad American eel Sea lamprey Species targeted for restoration include both species of river herring (blueback herring and alewife), American shad, American eel, and sea lamprey, all of which are diadromous fish that depend upon passage between marine and freshwater habitats to complete their life cycle. Reasons The impact of diadromous fish species extends for pursuing fish passage restoration in the far beyond the scope of a single restoration Concord River watershed include the importance and historical presence of the project, as they have a broad migratory range target species, the connectivity of and along the Atlantic coast and benefit commercial significant potential habitat within the and recreational fisheries of other species. -

O’Donovan, Division Director OFFICIAL LIST OF PUBLIC WATERS Published Pursuant to RSA 271:20 II (effective June 26, 1990) IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use this list for determining water bodies that are subject to the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act (CSPA). The CSPA list is available on the NHDES website. Public waters in New Hampshire are prescribed by common law as great ponds (natural waterbodies of 10 acres or more in size), public rivers and streams, and tidal waters. These common law public waters are held by the State in trust for the people of New Hampshire. The State holds the land underlying great ponds and tidal waters (including tidal rivers) in trust for the people of New Hampshire. Generally, but with some exceptions, private property owners hold title to the land underlying freshwater rivers and streams, and the State has an easement over this land for public purposes. Several New Hampshire statutes further define public waters as including artificial impoundments 10 acres or more in size, solely for the purpose of applying specific statutes. Most artificial impoundments were created by the construction of a dam, but some were created by actions such as dredging or as a result of urbanization (usually due to the effect of road crossings obstructing flow and increased runoff from the surrounding area). -

One of the aspects that is unique about the Family Nature Summits program is that children have their own program with other children their own age during the day while the adults are free to choose their own classes and activities. Our youth programs are run by experienced and talented environmental educators who are very adept at providing a fun and engaging program for children. DIXFIELD HISTORY (Written by Mrs. Ada Murch Smith) Location Dixfield is situated on the north side of the Androscoggin River, between this and the northeastern border of Oxford County. The length of the town, east west, is about seven miles; north and south, five miles. The surface is uneven, especially northwest of the center, where 3 large hills stand in a line, of which the southwestern one, consisting of two peaks known as the "Sugar Loaves", is the highest. Near the Androscoggin, a little west of the middle of the town is a little hill called "The Bluff." in the southeastern part of the town is a group of three mountains in a triangular position, of which the highest are, Burnt Mountain and Aunt Hepsy Brown's Mountain. Webb River forms the boundary line between this town and Mexico on the west. Newton Brook comes down from the north across the middle of the town, to the Androscoggin; and the Seven Mile Brook crosses the northeastern corner. -

Franklin County by Foot and Paddle Doug Dunlap Progress Report September 15, 2020 For walks and hikes; and travel by kayak and canoe, August 31-September 15, 2020 Discoveries: The United Way and the 2-1-1 phone number, Six Months into the Pandemic Over the past two weeks I have learned much about 2-1-1, a major, indispensable service to people of Franklin County, and throughout Maine, led by the United Way. The United Way of the Tri-Valley continues to serve as a vital safety net for Franklin County residents. The 2-1-1 project is an indispensable service. This is a 24/7 service, staffed by call specialists who take calls from people seeking help of many kinds: food, clothing, shelter, heat; access to mental health services, help with caring for a sick or incapacitated family member, financial burdens of many kinds. United Ways throughout Maine fund this service, in cooperation with the State of Maine. There is always someone to take the call, always available to help guide the calling person to someone who may speak to the very specific need expressed. 2-1-1 was available prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and widely used by thousands of callers each year. I am informed by United Way leadership that in 2020, Maine 2-1- 1 has received 36,000 pandemic related calls since the month of March. That amounts to 6000 calls per month for six months, an average of 200 calls per day. That is an astonishing figure. It costs money to provide the service.
