  • Anglo-Vatican Relations, the Nuncio Question and Irish Concerns, 1938-82 Daithí Ó Corráin
1 The pope’s man in London: Anglo-Vatican relations, the nuncio question and Irish concerns, 1938-82 Daithí Ó Corráin School of History and Geography, St Patrick’s Campus, Dublin City University, Drumcondra, Dublin 9, Republic of Ireland. Email: [email protected] Please note: The finalised version of this article has been published on Cambridge Core in British Catholic History, Volume 35 / Issue 1 (2020) and is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/bch.2020.3. Below is an earlier version I am grateful to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Dublin City University (DCU) for funding research in The National Archives, London for this article. 2 Although a British mission to the Holy See was established in 1914, the diplomatic relationship was not on a basis of reciprocity. From 1938 the pope was represented in London not by a nuncio (the Vatican equivalent of an ambassador) but by an apostolic delegate whose mission was to the hierarchy alone and not the British government. The evolution of the nuncio question sheds light on the nature of Anglo-Vatican relations, the place of Catholicism in British public life, inter-church rapprochement and British foreign policy considerations. This article assesses the divergent positions of the Foreign and Home Offices. The former was sympathetic to a change of status, whereas the latter was cautious due to the opposition of the archbishop of Canterbury and concerns about anti-Catholicism. The nuncio question was also of great interest to the Irish government. It feared that a nuncio in London would exert jurisdiction over Northern Ireland and undermine the all-island unity of the Irish Catholic Church.

  • Toward a Pro-Life Environmental Movement
Toward a Pro-Life Environmental Movement Lucia A. Silecchia ABSTRACT: In modern times, the secular environmental movement seems to have taken on an anti-life message, in ways both subtle and direct. This anti-human – and often anti-life – view has crept into the heart of the “mainstream” ecological movement with consequences that can be detrimental to both human dignity and to the environment itself. This essay does not aim to analyze the complexities inherent in economic development, demographic predictions, or climatology. Instead, it is a call to reflect carefully and soberly on the troubling moral consequences of grounding respect for the environment in disrespect for the dignity of the human person. The first part of the essay outlines the ways in which the ecological movement has run into conflict with pro-life values. This includes a discussion of both the anti-life rhetoric of the ecological movement and illustrative environmental policies that may have a detrimental effect on human life. The second part of the discussion sets forth the essential components of a pro-life vision of environmental responsibility and explores how the pro-life movement can enhance and renew the ecological movement. “Respect for creation stems from respect for human life and dignity.”1 N RECENT YEARS, I have been greatly disappointed as I have watched the modern environmental movement seem to take on an anti-life Imessage, in ways both subtle and direct. That disappointment is the 1 Pope John Paul II and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, “Common Declaration of Pope John Paul II and the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I (June 10, 2002),” available at http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/ speeches/2002/june/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_20020610_venice-declaration_ en.html.

This was the goal of the entire life of Saint Paul, to whom we looked throughout the Pauline Year now ending; this was the goal of the entire ministry of the Curé of Ars, whom we shall invoke in particular during this Year for Priests; may it also be the primary goal for each and every one of us. Certainly, to be ministers at the service of the Gospel, study and careful, ongoing pastoral and theological formation are useful and necessary, but even more necessary is that “knowledge of love” which can only be learned in a “heart to heart” encounter with Christ. For it is he who calls us to break the bread of his love, to forgive sins and to guide the flock in his name.
