Canada FOLKLORE OF SOUTHERN LITERATURE AS FOLKLORISTIC PROCESS: PORTRAYALS OF THE CANE RIVER REGION IN THE SHORT STORIES OF LOUISIANA'S ADA JACK CARVER by Martha Rachel Gholson A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Department ofFolldore Memorial University ofNewfoundland December 2001 St. John's Newfoundland Summary This dissertation examines the short stories of north western Louisiana writer Ada Jack Carver (1880-1972), focussing on her portrayal of Louisiana's regional ethnicities. W11ile situating Carver's writing within historical and cultural contexts, the discussion also describes the Melrose plantation literary group, examining this group in terms of theories concerning the uses of folklore in literature and theories that defme folkgroups in occupational environments. The consideration of diverse classifications leads to a discussion ofthe links between theory conceming regional literature, folklore as process, and folklore in literature through the example of Carver's writing and association with the Melrose plantation literary group. How elements of the folklore corpus interact with literary manifestations of elite culture creating and propagating regional stereotypes, which become part and parcel of both regional concepts of ethnicity and the tourism trade in the 1990s, is the central focus of this dissertation. 11 Acknowledgements This dissertation is the direct result of familial support which introduced the possibilities that derive from ingraining an interest in other cultures and other lands into my experience. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Although Lyle Saxon was New Orleans' most popular writer during the second quarter of the twentieth century, he is remembered less as a writer than as an editor and friend to writers, as well as an architectural preservationist, a French Quarter booster, and beloved public personality. Saxon was born on September 4, 1891. His early life was strongly shaped by family and by literary influences. It is significant that all three of the child's names were family names. His father Hugh, of course, was a Saxon, his father's mother was a Lyle, and Saxon's mother Katherine was a Chambers. All three were journalists. His grandmother, Elizabeth Lyle Saxon, was also a poet, author, and prominent early suffragette. In addition, his maternal grandfather, Michael Chambers, owned the first bookstore in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, long an institution in the town. Saxon's parents' marriage disintegrated shortly after his birth, and apparently he never afterwards had any contact with his father. He grew up in his grandfather's house with his mother and two spinster aunts. Young Lyle aspired to attend an Eastern college, but his genteel mother could not afford to send him to an Ivy-league college. Instead, he attended Louisiana State University in his hometown, but left college one course short of a degree. By 1919 Saxon was in New Orleans writing for the city's leading newspaper, The Times-Picayune. After a stint as a general reporter he began to write book reviews and fiction for the newspaper, as well as features about the city, its history and unique culture.

The King’s Jesters Even the Monarch of Merriment needs jesters in his court. Rex’s jesters dress in Mardi Gras colors—purple, green, and gold. 4. The Boeuf Gras This is one of the oldest symbols of Mardi Gras, symbolizing the great feast on the day before Lent begins. 5. Title Float: “Beaux Arts and Letters” While Rex Processions of past years have presented the history and culture of far-flung civilizations, this year’s theme explores the joys and beauties of Rex’s own empire and domain. New Orleans has a long and rich artistic history and has produced a wealth of artists and writers of national and international renown. Sculptors and painters, writers and poets have called New Orleans home, and have found inspiration for their work in her history, culture, and landscapes. Mardi Gras, the celebration unique to this city, has influenced the work of many of our artists and writers. 6. John James Audubon (1785-1851) Audubon, the pre-eminent American painter of birds and wildlife, was born in Haiti and came to America at age eighteen, living in Pennsylvania and Kentucky before traveling south with little more than his gun and his painting equipment.

Federal writers—many of whom would become famous, including Ralph Ellison, Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, and Dorothy West—collected reams of oral histories and folklore, and produced hundreds of guides to cities and states across the country.

The program will begin on Thursday afternoon Nwith a panel, readings, and a special conference edition of Thacker Mountain Radio and continue through Sunday afternoon with addresses, panels, and readings. The 2004 conference will be dedicated to author Walker Percy (1916-1990) in recognition of his contributions to American letters. Two sessions will examine Percy’s life and work through discussions and comments by friends and literary scholars. Author and editor Paul Elie will present a lecture on Percy.A panel with the author’s daughter Mary Pratt Percy Lobdell, grandson Robert Livingston Lobdell, and Patricia Sullivan, English professor at the University of Colorado, will discuss Percy’s life and work. Dr. Luke Lampton will give a presentation about his extensive collection of Percy’s works. Another special part of the 2004 conference will be the celebration of Mildred D. Taylor Day in Mississippi. The April 2 program will bring young readers, teachers, parents, and others together to recognize the achievements of this outstanding author. (See page 5 for details.)     Federal Writers Project Federal Writers Project Collection Scope and Content Included in the collection is correspondence by Federal Writers Project Director of Louisiana, Lyle Saxon dated from 1935 through 1943. The bulk of the collection is typed accounts based on hundreds of interviews conducted with residents between the years of 1937 and 1941. Though many areas of Louisiana are covered in the interviews, the majority concerns New Orleans and its vicinity. Some of the subjects covered include religion, past and present social conditions, ethnic customs, song lyrics, folkways and remedies, occupations, folklore and slave narratives. Also present are some typed copies of legal records and published works. For more on the slave narratives, see The Ronnie Clayton Collection, also contained in The Cammie G. Henry Research Center. The Louisiana Writers Project employed out-of- work journalists and other white-collar workers. The Works Progress Administration implemented it during The Depression as a part of the New Deal. Lyle Saxon served as the project's director. The project was active in Louisiana from 1935 until 1943. Inventory Folders 1 New Orleans Negro folklore and charms. Unpublished includes charms, voodoo and dream divination, list of miscellaneous folklore and contents of FWP file 66. Dillon notes on Marie Laveau for “Voodoo Documentary,” probably Voodoo in New Orleans. Laveau was a free woman of color noted for introducing Catholic symbolism to voodoo practice. 2 Negro religious and secular songs (words only) collected in various areas.
