WWW.NRCOLUMBUS.COM Thursday, December 29, 2016 75 CENTS Matthew response was a highlight of for the county By Allen Turner [email protected] Looking back on what by any stretch of the imagination was a difficult year for Columbus County, County Manager Bill Clark said Wednesday that a highlight for him of 2016 was his sense of pride at the way county employees and others responded during Hurricane Matthew and the subsequent flooding that inundated the downtown Whiteville business district and virtually destroyed downtown Fair Bluff. New schools, resumption of rail service, expansion of coun- ty water service, a decision to purchase the former Georgia- Pacific plant site and other economic development events also were major issues, Clark said, but for him the way the county pulled together and bounced back after the storm was the major event of the year. “The way we responded to the flood showed the best in us,” Clark said. “When things go bad, we pull together in Columbus County, and we really pulled together after Hurricane Matthew.” Acknowledging that some issues primarily involving com- munications arose after the storm, Clark said, “There are always going to be some issues whenever you have an event of that magnitude. Let’s be frank, we were overwhelmed by that event, but I think we responded to it very well.” Clark said he was referring not only to county employees but also to fire and rescue units throughout the county, as well as to outside agencies and volunteers.

    MARK RUSSELL COMPOSER Mark's recent projects include three series of Free Rein for Lime Pictures, The Worst Witch series 1-3 co- produced by the BBC, ZDF and Netflix, two series of Disney’s The Evermoor Chronicles, Castles In The Sky, a BBC film starrinG Eddie Izzard and Laura Fraser, the BBC mini-series Rocket’s Island, series 6 & 7 of the BBC’s Inspector George Gently, and Series 10 to 17 of the lonG runninG hit GenealoGy documentary Who Do You Think You Are. Prior to this Mark created a wonderfully inventive and dynamic score for the hiGh concept conspiracy thriller feature, Event 15 from Ipso Facto Films, as well as Kindle Entertainment’s very popular, The LiFe and Adventures oF Nick Nickleby for the BBC. Mark composed a beautifully touchinG score for the BBC's Best OF Men, (for which he was nominated for an RTS Award for Best Music 2012), which told the incredible story of the foundinG of the Paralympics - starrinG Eddie Marsan, Rob Brydon and Niamh Cusack. Mark’s score for the hugely successful Kindle Entertainment series Leonardo, gained him a nomination for best TV music at 2012's Ivor Novello Awards and won him the award for Best Music at the Kidscreen New York 2012 Awards. Mark’s first drama work included his BAFTA nominated score to the hugely popular ITV series ‘Cold Feet’. His music for the Fine Line Movie ‘Saving Grace’ (a US Top Ten Hit) brouGht him attention on both sides of the Atlantic, and his soundtracks for two biG budGet Movies, ‘Summer Things’ (starrinG Charlotte RamplinG) and ‘L’ex Femme de Ma Vie’ (includinG a title sonG with Jane Birkin) introduced him into the rarified world of French Film.
