Processing History: The George Moscone Collection was processed and the finding aid completed in April of 2018 by Joseph Olson, Project Archivist. The original order of the papers was indeterminate and thus the current arrangement was developed at University of the Pacific. The work was made possible through grant funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commissions (NHPRC). Biographical Note: George Moscone was born in San Francisco in 1929 and grew up in the predominantly Italian neighborhood of Marina, west of North Beach. Raised as a Catholic, he attended St. Ignatius High School where he played basketball and graduated in 1947. He attended the College of the Pacific (now University of the Pacific), graduated in 1953, and went on to receive his law degree from U.C. Hastings in 1956. After serving in the Navy he started a private law practice in San Francisco by the name of Morgan and Moscone. He served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1963 to 1966 and in the California State Senate from 1967 to 1976. George Moscone attempted to run for Governor in 1974 but never officially announced his bid, instead withdrawing before the Democratic primary. He was elected Mayor of San Francisco in December of 1975 and served from 1976 until his assassination in November of 1978. Scope and Content: The Moscone Collection consists predominantly of George Moscone’s records from his time in the California State Senate and as mayor of San Francisco, spanning the years of 1967-1978, but contains four series. The Senate Files Series encompasses mostly: Senate Bills (SB), Senate Committee Resolutions (SCR), Senate Joint Resolutions (SJR), speeches, and schedules. Subjects found within the Senate Bill files include: school lunch programs, child nutrition, advertising, public employees, youth issues, collective bargaining, various health laws, bilingual education, and marijuana law. The Campaigns Series consists of materials related to Moscone’s State Senate, Governor, and Mayoral campaigns. Records include: press releases, campaign schedules, flyers, correspondence, and bumper stickers. The Office of the Mayor Series encompasses the majority of the Moscone Collection and is separated into: subject files, correspondence, clippings, and reports. While the topics within the subject files are numerous, some of the more prominent themes include: arts and the Art Commission, Alcatraz, the United States Bicentennial celebration, the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), Manpower, city planning, health issues, the Municipal Railway (MUNI), police issues, the Office of Economic Development, transportation, wastewater, and the Yerba Buena Center (now the Moscone Center). The Documentary Film Assets Series consists of an external hard drive containing the unreleased documentary film One Raised Voice: The Life of George Moscone (2015), as well as digital files related to the film’s production, including: audio, oral histories with those that knew Moscone, still photographs, television clips and video footage of the San Francisco Bay Area. Arrangement: The Moscone Collection is arranged in four distinct series: Senate Files, Campaigns, Office of the Mayor, and Documentary Film Assets. The Senate Files series includes eleven boxes of Senate Bills, one box of Speeches, and one box of personal schedules. The Campaigns series contains one box of materials.
