LISTOF ETONIANS WHO FOUGHT-IN THE GREAT WAR MCMXIV-MCMXIX t/N LIST OF ETONIANS WHO FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR MCMXIV-MCMXIX '^ THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO THOSE ETONIANS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR MCMXIV-MCMXIX ; ;; ; ; INTO BATTLE kni—^HE naked earth is warm with Spring, And with green grass and bursting trees Leans to the sun's gaze glorying And quivers in the sunny breeze And Life is Colour and Warmth and Light, And a striving evermore for these And he is dead who will not fight ; And who dies fighting has increase. The fighting man shall from the sun Take warmth, and life from the glowing earth Speed with the light-foot winds to run. And with the trees to newer birth And find, when fighting shall be done, Great rest, and fullness after dearth. All the bright company of Heaven Hold him in their high comradeship. The Dog-Star, and the Sisters Seven, Orion's Belt and sworded hip. The woodland trees that stand together. They stand to him each one a friend They gently speak in the windy weather They guide to valley and ridges' end. The kestrel hovering by day, And the little owls that call by night. Bid him be swift and keen as they. As keen of ear, as swift of sight. VI ! ; The blackbird sings to him, "Brother, brother, If this be the last song you shall sing. Sing well, for you may not sing another; Brother, sing." In dreary doubtful waiting hours, Before the brazen frenzy starts. The horses show him nobler powers O patient eyes, courageous hearts And when the burning moment breaks. And all things else are out of mind. And only Joy-of- Battle takes Him by the throat, and makes him blind. Through joy and blindness he shall know. Not caring much to know, that still Nor lead nor steel shall reach him, so That it be not the Destined Will. The thundering line of battle stands. And in the air Death sings moans and ; But Day shall clasp him with strong hands, And Night shall fold him in soft wings. JULIAN GRENFELL. Flanders. April 191J. vu PREFATORY NOTE HIS is the Final Edition of the List of Etonians who served in the Great War between 4 August 1914 and 28 June 1919, or in the Baltic or Russia during the next few months. The rule made is that no one is included whose name was not in the Navy, Army, or Air Force Lists during some part at any rate of that period, with the excep- tion of those serving overseas without military rank in such units as the Red Cross, whose names are added in an appendix. The service which entitles to inclusion in the List is supposed to be whole-time service, and therefore Officers of the O.T.C. are, as a rule, excluded, as well as some others. After the appendix are also placed the names ofseven Etonians, imprisoned at Ruhleben, who would otherwise probably have served in the War. The name of Field-Marshal Earl Roberts is included, as he died, i4Novemberi9i4, aged 82, on a visit to the Indian Contingent in France, of illness due to his refusal, when he was reviewing troops who were without their greatcoats, to wear his own. The names of those whose deaths are directly attributable to the war are rubricated. The number is 1,157. Temporary, as well as substantive, but not acting rank, is given, and no distinction is made between Regulars and others. The rank mentioned is that given in the Army List for July 1919 or in the last issue in which the name occurs, but Honours conferred and mentions in dispatches for services before July 1919 are counted up to the last Gazette in 1920. No deaths occurring after 1920 are noted. In the case of Brigade Commanders and Officers of superior rank, the name of their original Regiment or other unit is added in brackets. The termR.H.A. is not employed, but R.F. A. or R.G.A.,andinthe case of some who served only on the Staff, R.A. Those Chaplains to the Forces only are included who served overseas. Mentions in Dispatches for actual operations are alone given. Where a Theatre of War is not mentioned, there was no service overseas, and the duties of D.C.O. are not reckoned as such service. In several cases, the subsequent home service of officers invalided from the front is not given. Service overseas after the armistice is not counted, except that in the Baltic and Russia. Belgium as a Theatre of War is included in France, and Salonica in the Balkans. The terms Palestine and Egypt include respectively the Syrian Campaign, and the campaigns in Sinai and against the Senussi. viii , The dates on the left of the entries denote the year of leaving Eton, and the initials on the right the Eton House or Houses. Honours gained previous to the war are printed in smaller Capitals, with the exception of the V.C., which was won in the Great War by Capt. A. H. H. Batten-Pooll, Lt.-Col. A. D. Borton, Lt. G. A. Boyd- Rochfort, Brig.-Gen. J. V. Campbell, tBt. Maj. W. La T. Congreve, Elliott- U.-Cv. G. H. Drummond, tLt. J. S. Dunville. tLt.-Col. N. B. Cooper, Lt.-Col. L. P. Evans, Capt. ]. R. N. Graham, tCapt. F. O. Grenfell, tCapt. J. R. Gribble, Maj. P. H. Hansen. A Summary of the Casualties, of the units of Service, and of Honours gained is added at the end of the book. With regard to almost all doubtful points, the advice has been sought of Lieut.-Gen. The Earl of Cavan (O.E.), or of the Committee,, consisting of the Provost, the Vice-Provost, the Head Master, and the Lower Master, appointed by the War Memorial Council to co-operate with the Compiler, who desires to express his thanks to them, and to many others who have given assistance. Among these may be specially mentioned Lieut.-Gen. Sir P. W. Chetwode, Bart. (O.E.), Military Secretary 1919-1920, Lieut.-Gen. Sir F. J. Davies (O.E.), Military Sec- retary 1916-1919, Vice-Admiral Sir W. C. Pakenham (O.E.), Col. M. D. Graham, C.B., C.M.G., C.V.O., Deputy Military Secretary, Col. W. B. Capper, C.V.O., of the Casualty Department of the War Office, Lt.- Col. S. G. Menzies (O.E.) of the Military Intelligence Department of the War Office, and Maj. B. E. Sutton (O.E.) of the Air Ministry. Mr. Clay, Assistant Secretary of the O.E. A., and Mr. Barrand, both Lay-clerks of the College, also deserve recognition for their help. Inaccuracies are inevitable in a long list, and in some cases maybe attributable to the fact that a few of those who served have not returned or have returned too late, the Forms which were sent to them to be filled up and corrected. The title-page is designed by Mr. Graily Hewitt and reproduced by Mr. Emery Walker, F.S. A. and his craftsmen, and it may be inter- esting to note that the Greek motto from Simonides was written out specially for this book on the model of a MS. of Hellanicus of the Second Century by Professor F. C. Burkitt, D.D. To all these, and to Lord Desborough, who has allowed the poem of his son, the late Capt. Julian Grenfell, to be here printed, the compiler is under great obligation. A copy ofthis book will be written on vellum by Mr. Graily Hewitt, and deposited at Eton, to be kept and seen there.
