A SPATIAL HISTORY OF ICARIAN COMMUNISM by John Derek McCorquindale A thesis submitted to the faculty of Brigham Young University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of French & Italian Brigham Young University April 2008 ABSTRACT A SPATIAL HISTORY OF ICARIAN COMMUNISM John Derek McCorquindale Department of French and Italian Master of Arts Prior to the 1848 Revolution in France, a democrat and communist named Étienne Cabet organized one of the largest worker’s movements in Europe. Called “Icarians,” members of this party ascribed to the social philosophy and utopian vision outlined in Cabet’s 1840 novel, Voyage en Icarie , written while in exile. This thesis analyzes the conception of space developed in Cabet’s book, and tracks the group’s actual spatial practice over the next seventeen years. During this period, thousands of Icarians led by Cabet attempted to establish an actual colony in the wilderness of the United States. -

The first part elabo- rates the practice by means of a ‘threefold logic’ of ground, path and fruition. While the ground and path remain a Levinasian ‘good practice’ of relationship and dialogue, the fruition of the work is now seen as ‘emancipation’, understood broadly as ‘the fact or process of being set free from restrictions’, rather than ‘therapy’, understood narrowly as ‘treatment to relieve a disorder’ (Oxford Dictionary). The turn to eman- cipation is explored by way of Jacques Rancière’s The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intel- lectual Emancipation. Philosophy as a practice of emancipation is the work of equals. -

O método do Ensino Universal, também conhecido como método da emancipação intelectual, se baseia nos princípios de que: 1) Todos os homens têm inteligência igual; 2) Todo homem recebeu de Deus a faculdade de ser capaz de se instruir; 3) Podemos ensinar o que não sabemos; 4) Tudo está em tudo; e, se oporá ao pensamento educativo da época por acreditar na opinião de que todas as inteligências são iguais e de que não se atingirá a igualdade entre os homens, pretendida pela Revolução Francesa, com a criação de instituições de ensino e com a formação de mestres explicadores, mas somente dando a cada homem o poder de reconhecer sua capacidade intelectual.
